She is the queen of mixed messages. Throughout this whole film, I honestly couldn’t understand what he saw in her. She was stingy with her affection and always left him standing in silence.
Julia Roberts in a nineties movie. In the end everybody have to marry her. It is like "does the female character have to kiss Colin Firth at some point?" or "will that stuff explode behind Steven Seagal?"
Umm..its not Julia Roberts. It's a character. He was also very unsure n hesitant. Both were clearly interested. N I am also the type who wouldn't admit to a random colleague about who a guy is when things are not official. I will talk about it to my BFF. But not a random stranger.
And at near the ending of the movie I think she explained that the costar was a loose mouthed actor who likes delving in rumors. That is not someone who you can trust with secrets or a new relationship still in its early stages. Social IQ is non existent if you keep blabbing about your personal life to anyone. Especially a high status actress that she is in this movie.
People are REALLY over-analyzing this scene. It CLEARLY illustrates the juxtaposition between a "famous" person and a "normal" person, and the complexities of the relationship dynamics. It is a delightfully captivating story-line. ❣
The writing in this movie has a similar issue to the writing in Four Weddings and a Funeral, it often puts British manners of speaking into an American character’s dialog. Julia Roberts can do okay with it to an extent but in this scene it doesn’t really work. And I don’t think she was being as discreet as she could’ve been, like someone else posted, she could’ve said he was a friend saying hello.

It all works out in the end and that’s all that really matters. We have got to get better at asking questions and hearing the answers then believing they are the truth. Look what they would have missed out on.
No. The movie ending is completely fake, pretending that - like in many romantic movies - a big romantic gesture can invalidate continuous ignorance. In real life this one is called red flag. If a man or woman humiliates you and then tries to fix it with a speech or a bunch of flowers, than you should run. In real life such a relationship will be terrible. Being together and having a baby does not fix the ignorance of a person. It is just increasting the bet.

Things can get complicated if people don’t come right out and say how they truly feel inside.
1000% true
There are worse things than complicated.
About the dumbest thing a guy can to is tell a girl he likes her. Great way to get strung along and ridiculed.

I just re-watched. I dont like how she treats him, repeatedly.
@@auscent She would just let him babble on and on, making him feel more insecure.
I completely agree. This was a very manipulative female character.
Romcoms only ever explain why the boy wants the girl. The audience can relate. Think about it the other way and it usually falls apart;)
i saw it as her wanting to protect him from the bad parts of fame (unwanted attention, tabloids, horrible rumours etc etc)
She is doing a Henry James film, something that Will had recommended. This action clearly shows something.
What does it show ?.....
Women will tell you never to read into their actions.
She really treated him very poorly throughout most of the movie. I'm not sure why he stuck around for it. I know, she's Julia Roberts.

There are reasons and there are excuses. That’s a poor excuse. I wonder if Peter thought the same when he denied Jesus?
She was protecting him from inviting the paparazzi into his life, too bad he didn't understand until later
