    Great channel. Lots of really good info for old house owners like myself. I bought the 1100 about 9-10 years ago and it has done lots of nice work. But that Cobra looks like a great addition, especially when working windows and moldings around exterior door. After watching you in action I'm gonna add the Cobra to my tool chest. Cheers.

    I much prefer working with Sandvik Bahco scrapers, which have replaceable TC blades.
    They really rip well into the paint.

      they are good, I use their 1" triangle. I like the Speedheater scrapers due to their heavy design and ability to clear the clumps of paint, instead of smearing under the blade. They must be kept sharp, though...

    How is the power draw on these two devices? Will I be ok to run a normal extension cord for outside work that's not near a receptacle? Should I be concerned about the cord overheating with prolonged use?

    I know this is an old video, but I wonder if anyone has used the 1100 on shingles? I see videos of clapboard, but I wonder if there are any additional challenges or problems using this product on shingles? I'm thinking mostly of the scraping part of the work. I realize the heat will work the same on the wood.

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  Год назад

      Hi Luke, yes the heat will work the same amd will likely cover 2 shingles per pass. You are also correct in thay the biggest difference will be the scraping - a little more tedious.
      Either way hand-holding of the tool will also get heavy and laborious. Have you seen our hands-free accessory?

    So you do this with lead paint? Or you would normally wear your respirator?
    Also, what's the process for indoor?

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Courtney, yes any paint, especially lead, since it doesn't vaporize it like a heat gun.
      I discuss the Personel Protective Equipment (PPE) at the end if the video.
      And the usual precautions we talk about in the FB Group - quarentine the inside work area with a zip-wall, fan in window to pull negative pressure in the room, HEPA mvac to clean up, etc...
      With these precautions your lungs and rest of your house will stay clean!

      Hi Jay, well I actually removed about 90% of the original clapboard on this wall, rehabbed it in the shop, back primed, and reinstalled. It had been a bit cut up from a non-historical addition we removed, so I had to recut the boards to make them look rigjt again..

    Hello Chris, I have been using the 1100 for a few years and it is fantastic. However, the arm assembly that I purchased from speed heater is clunky. In my current application the arm will not work. You mentioned below to Charlie about you rack system. Did you do a video or parts list for this? Please let me know.

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  4 года назад

      Hi Daniel, I'm actually going into production for a new bracket assembly prototype I just built. It features a quick release locking mechanism unlike the one I an using here. Aside from the bracket assembly, you only need about $65 more in Lowes/Home Depot parts ( rail, roller, rod, etc). If you are interested in a prototype (fully assembled, but bracket is unpainted) I can give you the link to my store. It also comes with a parts list for the rest that you can local purchase.

      Chris, Also, if you have any tips about sharpening the Speedheater scrapers I could use a little help. I have been using a bastard #5 file which helps but does not bring it to the original sharpness. In it's place I have been using the Stortz scrapers from Philadelphia. They have performed well, and are a bit easier to sharpen, but I still like the profiles of the Speedheater brand. Thanks.

    Thanks for the honest demonstration. Myself im not impressed, seems just as fast using a 20$ heat gun. I know its a little " dangerous " but im pretty confident in my skill level. Wouldnt recommend it for a novice, but what novice strips a whole house ?

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  4 года назад +10

      Hey, thanks for watching! Thats true, and I always recommend that if you dont have larger jobs to do, I wouldnt make the investment. However, speed aside, there are 2 major safety differences between infrared heat and forced air heat guns:
      1) Fire hazard: While no tool is 100% safe, infrared heat radiates and operates at about 450°, and only heats the work surface.
      Heat guns on the other hand usually operate from 500-1800°. To makes matters worse this super heated air is then forced into wall opening and cavities, easily starting a fire, especially where paper insuilation is involved. I'll post a link to a side by side test.
      2) Lead vaporization - back to the operational temperature - 450° vs 500-1800°. Lead paint vaporizes around 800°, so you are much more likely to vaporize lead paint with a heat gun. I dont take the risk. And with both I always wear a respirator, because any dist and smoke is bad for the lungs in my opinion.

    Dear My Old House Fix,
    Has anyone had any experience using a belt sander to sharpen Speedheater blades?

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  4 года назад

      I've had zero luck with Emery cloth and their sharpening kit. I use a gold flat file to dress the back side of the blade and dress the front angles as needed. I also have a local guy that sharpens blades. So when mine get really dull, I take them to him.

    it's too bad the rack system doesn't have an automized motor that would allow it to traverse along the rail then stop wherever you set it. Would allow it to basically bake the paint off a huge strip while you strip alongside. Would be super efficient.

    Are these guns a fire hazard like regular heat guns are?

    • @myoldhousefix
      @myoldhousefix  4 года назад +1

      Hi Eron, while no heat tool is 100% fire safe, infrared (Speedheater- 450°) is much safer than radiant (heat gun-1000°+). For example, Speedheater has a video with both against a work surface with a piece of paper behind it. The heat gun burns the paper...Seppeheater does not. Have you seen it?

      As you can see in the videos, it does work well when the tool is used properly. Let's see if we can figure out your issue and help. I assume you have an 1100.
      How long are you heating the work surface for - the recommended 30-45 seconds?
      How are the side guards adjusted? If adjusted all the way down, the surface won't get hot enough. Remove the 4 screws from the two side guards and shorten the tool standoff. The closer the tool, the better it will heat. Note - don't adjust it all the way down on top of the surface as it needs an air gap to prevent tool overheating
      Outside temp - is it cold out when you were paint stripping?
