My little brother had a fish named Dog. When my parents adopted a dog, we really wanted to name her Fish. Sadly, my mom refused on the grounds that she wasn't going to be running up and down the road having the neighbors hear her yelling"Fish!" at her dog. So we comprised. Her name is Salmon, Sammy for short so the neighbors can all think she's named something reasonable like Samantha.

I’ve got a cat named Arson.
It’s because when he was a kitten he did everything in his power to knock over lit candles.
If an arsonist isn’t menacing enough, he’s a Norwegian Forest Cat (a large breed) and nearly as big as a medium sized dog. He’s not fully grown.

Once in a blue moon Cerberus actually tries to live up to his name and it’s ridiculous.
Recently, mom rescued some runaway husky/german shepherd puppies and kept them on our deck until their owners could pick them up.
Apparently, Cerberus was chill to hang out with the big babies until I came out there….and then he tried to protect me by starting a fight with two dogs 4x his size.
I scooped him up and took him back inside before he actually attacked them but he was snarling and snapping like he was going to do it.
Best we can figure, is that he sees me as a junior/vulnerable pack member and was acting as my “big brother” to protect me from the strange dogs.
It kinda makes sense because I’m recovering from a serious head injury and he’s basically my emotional support dog in general.
I’ve recovered a lot in the last 2 months, but I can see why Cerberus would think I’m unable to defend myself.
It’s still ridiculous that he thought he could defend me, but his brain is the size of a walnut and I think that affects his decision making.

Story courtesy of my mum here. She was working as a vet when she was requested to help out a cat named Tonic. Upon further inquiry, she found out that the owner also had a cat named Gin who unfortunately died. You may have heard people saying "Don't name your pet anything you would feel stupid or get arrested for saying out loud". Well, I'm vouching to add a second rule in addition to the first one, that being this: Don't name your pet anything that doesn't make sense without the existence of another pet. Don't name your cats Pan and Cakes, because you're inevitably going to get people asking why your cat is named after a cooking utensil. Naming your dogs Eggs and Bacon isn't a great idea if you don't enjoy getting asked why you have a dog named Eggs.

My current cat's name is Piggy. She got that name because I originally found her with a group of her siblings and I frequently had to physically restrain her from eating all the food and not leaving any for the other, more shy kittens. I started calling her the little pig, which morphed into just Piggy over time. My mom thought it was a "horrible" name for a cat. The vets always call her Miss Piggy. To be fair, her original name was Slendy, short for Slenderman, so I think she got off with a more normal name compared to what could have been. The other family cats have been Shy, Seal, Cinder, and Cathy short for Cathedral (my sibling's current cat) so we've always been in the habit of giving weird names to our animals.
Edit: we've now added Mousetachio, Mouse for short, to the list of cats that we've given terrible names. She has a mustache/goatee combo marking on her face.

There were three unrelated cats named Pyscho; one family also had the last name Dick so they named their car Moby; one owner’s name was Jill and named her dog Jack; one family’s name was Brown so ofc they named their dog Charlie; there was also a Great Dane named Tiny.
But by FAR. By FAR the best name I ever came across there- a favorite at the hospital- was a Frenchie named Dozer Sparkle Pony. When they got her, the two kids in the family both wanted to name her, so they just combined the names. And hence a legend was born.

When I was in 1st grade I insisted upon naming an unfortunate goldfish "Guppy". I was fully aware that guppies are a completely different species of fish, but for some reason I just really wanted that to be the goldfish's name...
Honorable mentions goes to a female tortoise named "Mr. Turtle" who was a patient at the vet clinic I shadowed at. Apparently her owner's grandson got to name her when he was four years old...
Edit: I completely forgot about my uncle Ricky's deceased cat Precious-Horrible! She was abandoned in a corn field by her mother as a kitten before my uncle found her, and as she got older it quickly became apparent that something was just a little bit off about her. She liked Ricky just fine, but ANYONE ELSE she would immediately attack, no matter how many times she saw them. She'd even wait on top of doorways to pounce on people walking through them so she could get at their faces. My grandmother thought that naming her "Precious" might make her nicer, but that failed spectacularly, so they added "Horrible" to the end of it with a hyphen. Eventually they gave up on getting her to be nicer and just kept her locked in Ricky's room, which no one else dared enter until she passed away from old age...

I had a snake named Snakie, a frog named Light Greenie, another frog named Dark Greenie and a tarantula named Cutie Rex. In my defense, I was a young child when I named them. This has also made me realize that my childhood pets were snakes, frogs and spiders... Oh, and a lizard whose name I can't remember. Interesting lineup of things for a little girl to have, but what I'm afraid of is actually dolls, so it makes sense.

My sister's Dad named one of our kittens Cocaine back in 1984. We just called him Cokey. Poor thing didn't have a single brain cell to himself, either. Died trying to chase a car with one of our huskies...He grew up in a litter, but still thought he was one of the dogs. I now have 5 cats (on a small holding, I promise I'm not bonkers) and they're named Adora, Bow, Catra, Heath and Snickers. The first three were all one litter rescued from a garage. Heath and Snickers were from a litter of EIGHT saved from a work storehouse. Heath and Snickers (or as I call them Schmeef n Sneaks) just sort of never got adopted and stayed here. One of their male littler mates was named "Queen Anne" after the cherry confection. The person who adopted him didn't get the joke and dubbed him (I shit younot) "Mr. Balls".

When I was really young (like 3) I adored playing with plasti tak, or as I liked to call it gooey balls since that’s exactly what I’d always make with it when I was given a piece. Eventually my family ended up getting two young cats, and my parents let me and my older brother each name one. My brother named one of the cats Clover, and I decided to name my cat after the one thing I loved more than anything. Gooey Ball, though we all just called her Gooey.

Another was named after my dad's ex wife because she was loud and stupid, the alpha hen was Big Bitch or just Big B because she was the largest and most aggressive, two were named after my grandmother and one of her friends because they liked to stare at everything and gossiped like old women, and the last one I can't remember, it's been a few years since we gave them to a more established farm because the winter was looking at being a bad one.

Oh, my family has a long tradition for weird cat names. When I was child we had cats called Dark Side and Master and one whose name meant "Dog" in English. When my dad was young they had a cat whose name would be roughly translated into "Brown Tangle". Then when my big brothers were around two and three, we had a cat our family called "The Old Mother Cat". That was the name apparently.
Edit: If I had a nickel every time I run into a cat that was called "Koira", I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Edit 2: I'm now actually wondering if "ElMachoGrande" is actually somebody I know.

My dogs are named Caliente and Chloeënte.
For some reason, my family tends to give our dogs C names, so we chose Cali, for our bichon frisé-shih tzu. Since we're from Miami and Cali's very feisty, Cali had to be short for Caliente. When my sister was about to graduate high school, which meant that my parents were about to be empty nesters, we thought it would be best to get Cali a little sibling to boss around and keep her entertained , so we got a poodle-shih tzu puppy who also had to have a C name, which originally was going to be Cori (short for Cortadito, which is a Cuban espresso shot), but the little deaf baby girl didn't really fit that vibe, so we named her Chloe, which, to match her big sister, is short for Chloeënte. Then, for sorority rush, my sister's "big" got her a fish and named her Cathyente after our dogs.

My eight-year-old sister was trying to come up with a name for her new kitten. She was putting a lot of effort into it, made a huge list and was slowly eliminating names. She had the list shorten down to three names, one of which was Princess Twiggy LaMay. I said, “why don’t you just name the damn thing Lido Shuffle and be done with it?“ So we had a cat named Lido, which should give anybody my age an earworm for the rest of the day.

They'd found her as a kitten when she got injured crawling up into their car's engine to keep warm-she lost one of her front legs, an ear, and her tail. They named her Chingo, which is Spanish for "tailless", but can also mean "a shitload", like how much the vet bill was to save her. She was a sweetie, and the vet did a really good job, too, she looked more like she'd just never had those parts than like she'd lost them in an accident.
And in college, my then-girlfriend and I found a kitten. We named him Roflcopter Q. Catbread, Esq. Rofl for short.
