Absolute magic. I can think of only one other video recording of this aria for which I would use those words. It must be true of every age that there are just not enough singers with the beauty of sound and intelligence we hear from this and every video of Lucia Popp.
I must confess, we have not only Mozart and Popp for this utterly gorgeous piece of music but also the Roman Catholic Church for commissioning Mozart to write it.
I'm not sure of the source of your information about the church having commissioned this mass. But there was no commission for this mass. Mozart wrote it as a gift to his new wife, Constanze. Sadly, he never finished it.
