Anna Moffo and Lucia Popp are the only ones that sings the beginning of repeated phrases beautifully with the remarkable high note at the end. Anna and Lucia are the two best coloraturas ever.
What a life story. Initially, Lucia aspired to be an actress (following a stint at medical school). Even when her vocal talent was discovered, she was first considered a mezzo-soprano. Her voice continued to mature and develop well into adulthood. Today, her resting place is at the Slávičie údolie (literally 'Nightingale Valley') cemetery in Bratislava, in her native Slovakia. R.I.P. Lucia.
Does everyone hear how beautiful her voice is or what? The notes are so beautiful it's unreal mad xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo xoxoxo Arthur
Frühlingsstimmenwalzer is a well-known piece for a coloratura soprano but this particular performance made me an instant fan of Lucia. The metallic quality of her voice was refreshing to listen to. Thanks to this quality, her voice sounded shiny, sharp and penetrating despite not having the biggest voice. Her vibrato was a thing of beauty. The vibrato run started at 2:34 were so satisfying.
I have now reviewed pretty much everyone singing Fruhlingstimmen on youtube, and there are some lovely, impressive voices but no one comes close to Lucia. First her voice has a unmatchable combination of crystalline clarity and creamy warmth that is recognizable instantly. Then there is her musicality and dramatic interpretive skills, also unsurpassed. Whatever she sings, she IS the music. Thank goodness for youtube, so more people can discover and enjoy her performances. Thank you dominicIV for posting, but please tell us what this film is , and where it might be available.
You deserve my respect, sir. As a Lucia's lover, I got to admit that your coment describes that great woman on her splendourness, with just a few words.
+DeeDee Gattina Maybe you read this. Could not agree more. The only soprano I know (beside my own sister!) who could master warmth even on very high tones. There is something deep, rural, even mystical in Lucia´s voice. Hard to describe but so easy to hear....
Omg. the best version I heard. I came after Patricia something, sumi jo, dessay, another Korean lady, and damrau. This is hands down.... The best of the best.
"Patricia something" was Patricia Janečková from Ostrava, Czech Republic who, like Lucia, is Slovak by birth. She was seventeen in the video you saw of her performing this, with her hometown symphony during a "New Year's Concert In Vienna Style" in January 2016. Listen to some of her videos before you dismiss her. She is a phenomenal soprano, and an absolute professional. And if there is such a thing, I have a feeling that Lucia may just be "channeling" her. Listen to her more recent performances and see if you agree. She and Lucia are the two most beautiful sopranos I have ever heard in my lifetime. A sweetness of their voices that most "divas" just never achieve.
@@fr1424 Ummm... yeah, whatever. No shortage of "experts" on RUclips ready to run down anyone who doesn't fit into their narrow concept of "great". A very lovely singer who we lost much too young. I remember her Strauss 4 Last Songs with the Nice Philharmonic just a few months before her death. I had the privilege of singing two small roles in Der Rosenkavalier with her in Nice during my very first season in opera. Such an artist, so kind and considerate.
Lucky you! To be on stage with the divine Lucia! I consider myself lucky that I saw her as Susanna in Figaro, once. Until that point I liked opera...after that performance I LOVED opera, because she showed how transcendent the union of music and drama could be.
@Tong Wu no, but if one knows what key the piece is in it's relatively easy to extrapolate from there. The piece is in B-flat major, so the high note she interpolates at the end is a high F (F6.)
Me too, but not in a good way. It was all heaven up till then... I wouldn't say it ruined the piece, but it ruined the peace. Not a bad note, just not as solid as all the rest. Everything else she does here is extraordinarily exquisite
For the people asking for the source of this clip, I believe it's from a German TV movie called "Hofball für den Walzerkönig" directed by Günther Hassert. IMDB says it was released 25 April 1965 in West Germany. Not having seen the whole thing, I can't verify this for sure, but the details of the movie fit. We're so lucky to have this early example of Popp's talent!

How lovely to see her performance and to be able to connect it to the voice I know so well. I have her CDs and I've seen her stills but it is so thrilling to see her charm and graceful manner.
I am a total novice here and just stumbled across this delightful, lovely singer. What a wonderful gift she had! She makes it look so easy! Thanks for posting.
