    Smokin Joe was the most courageous fighter I've ever seen, and a great fighter. However he stood no chance against Foreman who was too big and strong. His short stature and swarming style meant he had to come through Foreman's blows to get inside, and Foreman could just push him into range and batter him. Mismatch of styles, but both great fighters.

      No, it wasn't his short stature or swarming style (Forman may have never lost a fight if he was a swarmer but he wasn't he was a slugger) that cost Frazier the fight vs Forman it was his style made him susceptible to the best uppercutters by always bending over straight forward at the waste right into Formans punch. and that's what cost Frazier the fight. Forman had the power to exploit that weakness where Ali didn't that's why Ali caught hell vs Frazier while Forman beat him rather easily.

  • @GonzGunner
    @GonzGunner 3 года назад +33

    Speaking from a standpoint of tactics, the main thing that started Joe's decline was that he never changed his fighting style to adapt to a new generation of fighters. What had worked for him to defeat Ali in their first fight ( relentlessly pressing the attack, constant bobbing and weaving, and ducking, and hard left hook coming out of nowhere ) was starting to be easily read. Ali put this to good use in their second and third fights, he learned his lessons and dealt with Joe accordingly. Foreman already had plenty of time to study that, and combined it with his own pressing attack and brute punching power to knock out Joe in this fight.

      Joe Frazier was advised by his management to avoid both flights, but he wanted the rematch with Foreman because George Foreman was the only person in his career that he hadn't beat.
      Once he lost that first match, he was desperate to at least give it one more try to even up the score. He didn't want to spend the rest of his life knowing that George Foreman had beat him, and he never beat George Foreman.

    Foreman was a bad style match up for Frazier. I think Frazier should have thrown hooks to Foreman's body, this may have been more effective.

      He could have chosen his poison. After a few hooks to the body, George would have leveled him with counter rights.

    People saying Frazier avoided Big Punchers despite fighting hard hitting Bonavena twice, Chuvalo and Foreman twice.
    Liston was dangerous but on the decline.
    Norton and Frazier were friends.
    Lyle and Shavers were beaten by Quarry.

    Foreman had underrated defense. That’s why he was able to come back after age 40.

    You watch these fights and wonder how in the world did Ali beat Foreman. It was the greatest shock victory I can recall in boxing in my lifetime. Foreman brushed aside Frazier, Ali's nemesis, as if he were a child.
