An excellent presentation - I really wish I had heard it before my Christian faith had failed, and I spent too many years as an unhappy atheist! Thankfully, I returned to my faith about three and a half years ago, and the hard work of so many diligent people on this platform played a massive part in that. Praise Jesus for providing unworthy doubters like me with scholars like Paul Maier!
It is *so* difficult for people in a *SEA* of alleged "scholars" who write books like the ones this man mentions to not have holes in their faith or outright LOSE their Faith. Thank the Lord that men like this exist in order to reinforce the FACTS and to do it from a scholarly level. I was raised in a denomination that said I was good with "just the Bible". The fact is... NO I wasn't. Every week or two some "learned scholar" would "discovery" something supposedly new and it would put another hole in what I believed. Later on I realized the Bible is not in a vacuum ....I.e. dropped from the sky. There's an actual RESEARCHABLE Hiistory around the Church and what they believed, why they believed and how they actually practiced their faith. I blame groups like the one I was with that pretend that a book was simply "dropped" from the sky into our hands and things like "Jesus is just a feeling." etc.. and then of course there are those who are in direct atheistic attack as well. I believe Lord, Help my unbelief!!!! One of my favorite sayings from scripture.
I so pity you Joe. You escaped, and yes reality is tough, but it beats the delusional fantasy no matter how much you want them to be true. Joe needs a sky daddy soother to make it through the day. Now that is sad.
@@christian1172-z9e I only state the obvious; because of the "accolades" that this "alleged researcher" gets for "being honest and sincere". I am a lawyer...and I never give accolades to such nonsense. When your FOUNDATION is wrong; then any "premise" that is "inculcated upon an audience" based on such FOUNDATIONAL ERRORS....is a lie and propaganda. @@DavidWilliams-on9bu I agree. If the premise is wrong, everything built on it is wrong. I do believe character witness is used in court of law? Not to replace the evidence. But to let us know whether the expert giving the evidence is worth our time. If a person is known for lying, or for talking off the top of their head, their words are under suspicion. We still need the evidence. And I believe Christianity has that beyond a reasonable doubt.
It is astonishing how much controversy Jesus has stirred up right from the beginning, with no sign of it quieting down either. Others who were really big deals at the time we have forgotten about or only historians and history buffs know about them. Yet this man has torn the world apart after 3 just years of his mission. Of all the people who have ever lived more have heard the name of Jesus than of any other man that has ever walked the Earth.
Actually Christianity didn't really take off before constantin. Before him it was just a not very large religious group like a lot of others, but his wife liked it, and he saw how he could use it politically. So, it was more like 200 years, not 3.

Sapping our intellectual and creative abilities and energies along the way.

Brilliant. Concise, personal, direct, and precisely informative. There'd be a lot less bored students if all teachers had this sort of inspired delivery.
@ I was, at the time I wrote this comment. Some of the things the speaker had said at the time sounded to me, at least, like he was another Dan Brown. I didn't watch the entire presentation. My apologies. I am embarrassed I spoke too soon. Reading the comments that all sounded very Gospel- (Besorah) oriented gave me a good barometric level on what the ideology of the presentation was about. I can't say I remember what it was he said that made me believe he was more of the all-too-popular view that had to believe Jesus/Y'shua had sex with Mary of Magdala and pass his seed on to future generations, which is something I definitely do not subscribe to. He had every right to marry and have kids to pass on his seed, but that was not the reason he came. Sorry for any mix up. Sometimes I react too quickly, especially when it has to do things I am passionate about, and the many sites featuring peanut gallery leaders that love to pervert the truth. My criticism of Paul Maier is that he is telling his audience that these things which he is "proving", are not already believed by agnostics, atheists or whoever. This is not true. The people and places he mentions are already well known and it reflects badly on his admirers on this forum that they are impressed by him. As for his mention of the evidence for Jesus in Josephus, I bought a copy of Josephus to see for myself and it is so obviously an addition by somebody else I am amazed that anyone can believe it. On just one eight of a page he talks about Jesus saying "He was the Christ". He then goes on ( on a full page )to relate a story about a woman tricked into sleeping with a wealthy Roman. Surely a God would warrant more space in a history book than a sex scandal? Sorry for being so long winded about this. Good luck to you Teresa.
I read his book about Pontous Pilate, the best book I have ever read about history and the roman empire. Legend says that Pilate accepted the faith and that both the eastern and russian orthodox faiths celebrate a holy day called saint Pilate and Procura day.
Tertullian says that about Pilate, in his Apology, approximately end of chapter 21. I wouldn't call what Tertullian says a legend. "But He spent forty days with some of His disciples down in Galilee, a region of Judaea, instructing them in the doctrines they were to teach to others. Thereafter, having given them commission to preach the gospel through the world, He was encompassed with a cloud and taken up to heaven, - a fact more certain far than the assertions of your Proculi concerning Romulus. All these things Pilate did to Christ; and now in fact a Christian in his own convictions, he sent word of Him to the reigning Caesar, who was at the time Tiberius. Yes, and the Caesars too would have believed on Christ, if either the Caesars had not been necessary for the world, or if Christians could have been Caesars. "
Evidence for Christ. I'm astounded at how much information is presented here. Archaeology, Geography, Inscriptions, Stones, and despite the amount of loss suffered by fire and destruction these things exist still. We can't have the Libraries of Alexandria or Egypt back, but the First Century is yet beautifully elaborated on in discovery all the way to the end of the 20th century and beyond. William Craig Lane says it so clearly, and I'll not forget his debate with Christopher Hitchens. He invites the athiest scholar to accept Jesus somewhere in the dialogue. How Love Peace Patience, Kindness, Meekness, Longsuffering, Temperance, and Self Control exert themselves. Incredible character this Josephus, and all should pay close attention to this talk.
Is that debate with Craig were Hitchens made him look and sound the ignorant, mendacious scientifically ignoramous con man that Craig is?. Every Christian apologist, professional proselytising evangelical fundamentalist attempt of trying to argue their claimed God into existence has ended up with their argument being thoroughly discreditted, if their claimed God was real and evidenced to exist by anyone it would be common knowledge, the person proving that God to exist would be worlddamous, indeed they would be the most celebrated person toha e walked the earth, there would be no believers in the Abrahamic God because the proof would be there that was irrefutable, undeniable, indisputable empirical unfalsifiable and conclusive, and there would be no unbelievers of that God existing, 6,000 plus years of trying to argue it into existence and further away today than on day one. Kuffar Legion well, if you think the darkness dark enough for us to have a record of it from antiquity was just dark clouds, then your too far from belief in whatever was recorded in the gospel there. I'll admit, that is one that has even the scholars universally stumped (as far as I know).. but I don't believe it would be there if something didn't happen. Since it happened one day in one City 2000 years ago, I'm not surprised that there wasn't a recorder of history standing around to describe it. There was a witness that told luke (I think it was.. I just woke up lol) and since he's universally accepted as the greatest historian of antiquity.. That works for me. I've seen some crazy things in my life.. But I didn't write them down at the time.. And there's multiple millions that could say the same. It's hard to imagine today with everyone having a recorder in their pocket I know, so think about it back then
Kuffar Legion when my dad was in hospice and dying, which took a week or so, he kept saying that people were visiting him that nobody else saw. The kicker is that everyone he said that came to him was people who had already passed away. He didn't see the pope or any famous people, but it was people like our neighbor who had recently died, who told him not to worry about all the things he was worried about leaving, that they will all work out and that there are no problems like that where he was going. That's just one example. Anyways, I imagine that day in Jerusalem might have been something like that.. people started seeing other people that they knew were dead.. But when they left, that just kind of disappeared. And when they discovered the Graves that were opened because of the earthquake, some of them thought that is why they had seen someone dead walking around. Who knows how it works, but maybe when Christ was getting ready to open that door back from the dead to the living, he let some others through it for a bit. I don't know, but that's not the center of the faith the Lord has given me, it's only something I discovered later and it's not a stumbling block to me.. I hope you don't let it be to you either
Kuffar Legion It's so common of an occurrence that it's in the hospice literature, recognized by the medial professionals that deal with the dying every day.. so yeah, I imagine it happened back then too. It tells you to expect your loved one to see spirits if the DEAD, not their favorite celebrity or some guy from work they saw every day and are just hallucinating. I don't know why you brought up yourself seeing someone when you were hospitalized but that was probably a drug induced hallucination or vivid dream. What's was your point anyway? You wanted to know how people saw dead people after Jesus died and I gave you an example of that type of thing happening even today. You don't want any answers because you think you know or all already. You even think you know why I'm a Christian but you could hardly be more wrong. I didn't think of death at all when the Lord called me, and I tell people about Him because 1. I'm absolutely sure that the Bible is truth and Jesus is alive. 2. It follows that hell is real and I don't want you to go there 3. Our God IS good.. Even wonderful and I experienced his presence and blessings all the time, and grow in wisdom and truth.. so why would anyone keep something like that to themselves?? 3. Jesus tells us to go and share the good news (aka the gospel)!! I seriously doubt that your persistence in unbelief outweighs my reasons for believing.. But that's your problem.. and it is sad. If you're right then we'll both die and that will be it. No gloating.. nothing mattered anyway, but if I were you I'd prepare for the judgement that the Lord tells us about.. And you do that only by having Jesus cover for you. So I recommend hiring the judges son for your lawyer 😉. BTW, I'm done with you. I write this for possibly someone else's benefit at this point. I'm not stupid enough to think you'll suddenly have something nice to say, actually I'm sure you've just got to rip what I've said to shreds, so have at it. I'm not gonna waist my time now but hopefully I've at least planted a seed
I'm working on getting all of Maier's books. I didn't know what he was about when I got his Josephus about five years ago. I'd started Bible study again. And then his Eusebius. I forget where I saw his Pontius Pilate but I'm halfway through that. I've got 4 of his other novels. I struggle with my faith. But I'm wondering if someone can explain the sense of peace I get when I sit down and crack the Bible. For good or ill I spend most of my time on radical Islamic issues, which get me good and pissed off. When I finally sit down to the Bible study it's like a calm comes over me and almost like someone whispering in my ear, "this is where you're supposed to be. This is what you should be doing". Plus the added bonus of knowing which is "good" and which is "evil". I see Islam all over the scriptures. Especially when it talks of Christian martyrs and Revelation 20:4. People need to remember there's a scripture in the Bible that says, God will not be mocked, so I heard a story about a young lady. She was going out with some men in her car, and her mother said to her, go with God my daughter, and she mocked, and said well if God's going to ride with us, he will have to ride in the trunk, because there's no room inside here with us. @@rawman909 There is a such thing as a messianic Jew. If you are a Jew once, you are always a Jew. Jesus Himself was a Jew. A messianic Jew is someone who believes that the messiah who was prophesied to them is Jesus, and quite rightly. So, in essence, they are Christian, with Christian beliefs, but they are under the title of a messianic Jew. There's a difference between saying you're a messianic Jew to saying you're a Christian Muslim. Islam is a completely different religion. Most of the Bible focuses on the Jews.
How wonderful to have this knowledge, that we can use when people say there is no proof of Jesus' existence. What a great man of learning...and humour.
It's sad that we expect the Christians to follow the evidence when it comes to evolution and the age of the Earth, but some of us can't do the same when it comes to the historical Jesus.

Pretending that hearsay is good evidence is just dishonest. All history can ever do is indicate the most probable series of events, and this, by definition, can never include miracles.
I have seenprof. Maier in person before at a Lutheran Church. He is extremely knowledgeable takes a very fair approach using archaeology geography history and faith. His history books are very good especially his one volume abridged edition of Josephus writings. However, I wish she was a little more serious and less goofy about this and presentations this is a serious subject the world is lost. If you cut all the corny jokes out the lecture would be half as long it would be easier to remember the major points. However he’s a very nice fellow. I think he was in his 80s when this was recorded six years ago I hope he is in good health. He was going on archaeological dig‘s up till a few years ago for sure
I don't think there is such a thing as a humble man of God, as you put it, because if you believe the all powerful all knowing creator of the universe is acting in your life and answering prayer etc, then that sounds pretty arrogant if you ask me. The opposite of humility. My advice is if you actually care more about what's true than what feels good or confirms your existing beliefs, apply logic to the bible's claims, cos they all fall short of being convincing or sufficient enough as evidence that they're true.
Extremely knowledgeable and in-depth understanding of the ancient literature and archaeological finds. About Josephus though Maier's report may be the consensual one, but it raises a pretty much insurmountable problem of how this interpolation got copied into all subsequent manuscripts across Europe and Near East, as from Keith Prosser "Was Jesus Crucified?". His Shlomo Pines' reference is not as reliable as he's making out here. Very interesting talk though.
It bears repeating ... Yehoshua fulfilled all 4 of the spring moedim when he came the first time and he will fulfill the fall moedim when he returns ... ALL 4! Not just Pesach aka passover ... and don't forget about the four days of inspection which began on - you guessed it! The 10th day of the first month aka "palm sunday" ❤❤❤ That is what scripture tells us. The shadow pictures that were set up a long time ago in the Old Testament find fulfillment in Yehoshua, our cohen gadol, our great high priest ❤❤❤Let the ruach ha kodesh, the "holy spirit", lead us into all truth
because there was a pontius pilate doesn't mean there was Jesus. they could have constructed a story around historical figures. the James ossuar James is considered to be a forgery. the archeological evidence doesn't mean much.
I enjoyed this immensely and learned quite a lot. Took some time to understand part of the puns, though, if I was an English natively I might've found those funnier, having picked up on them sooner. Like Augustus "urning" his place in history 😀
Well your first comment wasnt articulated very well. I meant... Id like to know more about Saladin from early first-hand sources who are non-Muslim. This is what happens when atheists investigate Jesus, they scrutinize to the utmost every little detail but will happily accept other historical figures on the say so of a wiki piece. You said you'd like to know more about Jesus from non-Christian sources, so i gave you Bart Ehrman.
Plane Joe Jesus is where it’s at!

It is astonishing how much controversy Jesus has stirred up right from the beginning, with no sign of it quieting down either.

What a coincidence that he mentioned "Jesus Chirst Superstar". I just watched a short clip of it a few days ago, as I was curious about it having the dude from Korn in it. It was absolutely terrible.
It's so good to listen to a knowledgeable scholar presenting historical evidence instead of the usual ignoramuses slash atheists slash scientists slash geniuses. Facts over mere (dis)beliefs will win in the end.
Just another scammer.
The world has been for a long time engaged in writing lives of Jesus... The library of such books has grown since then. But when we come to examine them, one startling fact confronts us: all of these books relate to a personage concerning whom there does not exist a single scrap of contemporary information -- not one! By accepted tradition he was born in the reign of Augustus, the great literary age of the nation of which he was a subject. In the Augustan age historians flourished; poets, orators, critics and travellers abounded. Yet not one mentions the name of Jesus Christ, much less any incident in his life. - Moncure D. Conway [1832 - 1907] (Modern Thought)
Jesus is all myth! Seek the truth!
@@wowojeejee Hello?! Ever read Tacitus? Try actually watching this video. It features a doctor of history putting a nuke to your nonsense. There are many extant contemporary documents outside scripture that name Christ Jesus. Just because your head is in the sand doesn't change reality. Besides, do you realize how much has been found since 1907? Again, had you simply watched this video you'd be aware of this, including the secular ancient Roman census documents found that read almost word for word to the census decree found in Luke's gospel, etc.

@Dan Delgado Isn´t that Bart Ehrman basicly the only idiot in that field, having to be taught by Christians.
His views should be known to you are not uncontested.
Even taking his initial work and his newest will deliver an enormous gap.
Bart believes people forgetting what clothes people wore on 9-11 equals people forgetting what happened in the gospels.
Also, as for the earthquake, it wasn't just a local earthquake. Another researcher said that the Chinese recorded the earthquake all the way over there in Asia. So apparently it's shook the foundations of the Earth.
I thought I read that one of the Caesars talked about a noon darkness that happened around the time of Jesus's death. I don't think it was the current one at the time (Tiberious), but I'm thinking it was Nero reflecting about it in something he wrote.. or maybe his senate.
please, for adding to documentation information. who is "ANOTHER RESEARCHER"? sloppy to leave us without that. You aren't the only person who does that but it is a critical piece of info. it feeds the skeptic cause for us to be sloppy.sourcing is critical. a name, an article title, a LINK would be helpful otherwise we wont be taken seriously and you will be just "preaching to the Choir"Regards KS
I sometimes wonder if the Antichrist isn't so much a person as an ideology.

Later on while they were driving down the road they had a wreck, and everyone died, but when the police saw the trunk, that he was intact, they marveled when they open the trunk, there was a carton of eggs in the trunk, not one of them were broken. So think about that, God holds our next breath.

In part because of the siren voices in the books that this speaker comments on, I wandered away from nominal Christianity into agnosticism, atheism, gnosticism and New Age paganism, neo-buddhism, wicca, goddess worship, astrology and tarot. Then, researching Islam I was so horrified at its portrayal of Jesus that I hurtled back out of a fog of eclecticism to the Gospels. Whereupon I found Christ afresh. There is no such thing as a messianic Jew. You're a Christian. It is as to say you're a Christian Muslim.
A truly humble man of God. Brilliant in his field and naturally humorous too. I will listen to as many recordings of him as I can.
Humble?! You missed the part where he literally wants to rub someone's nose in it!
Thank you for this. What's the date of this talk?
I took Christianity in university and they kept talking about the historical Jesus.. I'm like Jesus Christ from the Bible.. they are one and the same
Extremely knowledgeable and in-depth understanding of the ancient literature and archaeological finds.
