Unbelievable Colors! Prepping a Pile of Raw Ammolite Specimens! | Step-by-Step Guide

- In this one, we prep ammolite specimens! There are a few methods depending on the type of specimen, but the end result is a phenomenal rainbow covered piece of fossil! Ammolite makes for incredibly vibrant specimens and one of a kind jewelry pieces! Ammolite is extremely fragile and can be intimidating to prep and polish for that reason, but it really is far easier than you'd think so long as you take the proper precautions to keep it stabilized. I hope this video is helpful for anyone trying to prep their own specimens, and I will have another one out soon!

You guys are so fun to watch. You bring so much to the lives of strangers. You deserve all good things.
Theo, that piece of petrified wood I bought from you turned out to be even better than I could have hoped for! I cut a slab off of it, and it was dark brown/almost black, with a white vein of fortification banded agate running through the middle. Let me know how I can get you a photo, and I'll send it over. Also, I got confirmation of the names of the two mystery rocks I gave you.
The silver one is pyrolucite, and the opaque agate looking one is orange Thomsonite with mesolite.
I DUB YOU THE YOUNG MASTER OF AMMOLITE=YMoA!!! You are A BAD MAMMA JAMMA!!!
Ammolite is one of my favorites! I'd love to find some someday. Everything turned out amazing man. Thanks for sharing. Eventually I'm going to get ahold of some of this stuff!
Wow! I love the crystal over the ammolite, it really brings out the color! You're so talented, Theo! Perfect job on them! So stunning! 😊
OUTSTANDING. Gorgeous Colors. You are definitely Talented and Skillful. Thank You For The Tutorial and Especially for Sharing with US and The Rest of The World. MANY BLESSINGS UPON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!
Oh my gosh, I love ammolite, almost as much as I love opal--and I love opal a lot. I'm so disappointed I couldn't go to the show, but I got to watch you prep for it so I can live with that, LOL. Thank you for taking us along with you, it's such a boon for those us that cannot physically hunt for minerals and fossils anymore. Big hugs to you and yours!
This is most awesome.
I really love that you take time to educate while you entertain us in your posts❤ Glad the show went well ❤ Keep on Rockin❤
Excellent video Theo, some of my favorite material to pick up was busted Ammonite and baculite with Ammolite on the exterior, my hounding Buddies thought I was nuts for doing so.
That was 25 years ago and I am glad I did...👌👍😎😎
You have some beautiful pieces there my friend...
Superb, stupendous...colors!!! Wow!
You deserve the Honor YOUNG MASTER of AMMOLITES/ among other minerals=a true ARTIST!!!
I am just new to the rockhounding community. So far, I find it to be the most chill out of the community. The people seem to be very amazing people. I enjoy your videos, thank you.
Another very interesting and informative video Theo! Another reminder of how astonishing our planet and it’s history are. Oh that color play, yummmmm!🤩 Congrats on the success (although I had zero doubt’s), of your showing and greeting’s. 🌻
They turned out beautifully!
Those were some amazing colors after you put your magic hands on them. Nice tips. I use CA on lots of unstable things. From super thin to gap fillers, it does the job. I'm glad you had fun and we hope you made lots of money at the fair. Yippi!
Awww, I wish that I could have gone but am so glad that it was a great turn out for ya! Yeah, that last one would have to be my fave!
There is a reason why I make you prep most of my ammolite. And really anything I want to look nice. 😉
So beautiful 😍 Glad the show went well
* Stunning colors. Love the pendant. So lovely..
I have that same stuff too. Just never used it yet and thanks for demonstration of it.
I love ammolite. Thanks for all the tips!
Thanks again for sharing your process. I have lots that I am still scared to touch. I will start with some small pieces and see if I can produce some results without damaging it. Couldn’t make it to the show but maybe next year.
Theo is absolutely right about Ammolite hating mesh flat lap plates... 💯 % That was probably the first change I had to make when I began learning. No mesh plates. See @1:05
Oh I am glad you had a good time at the show. Maybe someday I'll make it. I love the pretty ones they are my favorite 😂
YOU ARE TEACHING THIS OLD MAN NEW THINGS!!! I like using the wet dry sandpaper in my beginning. You o posses an extremely high Patience. Maybe is why YOU Bring out Extreme Beauties.
Really very good video with reliable information about grinding- polishing ammolite 👍👍👍
Those are beautiful!!!
Wow those are beautiful! Ammolite is just amazing stuff and I'm going to check out the store to see if any of them are listed! Thanks Theo! I'm sorry I couldn't go to meet you all at the show, but I am handicapped and I couldn't get there. But I do hope to meet you some day!
Such beauty...awesome work❤
I found an awesome little amonite that had sutures & ammolite both showing on the same side in a little shop in Roswell, NM
That color is amazing 🤩
This is my favorite gem stone.
gonna make it out there one day from canada !
Welcoming another chance to Let commercials play in the background as a small way to Thank you for sharing so much with us!!!
Absolutely gorgeous ❤
Theo, I have a garage full of partial ammonite and pales full of chunks like you have in this video. I’ve never known how to properly clean and finish them so they just sit there. Let me know if you want some, I’ll give you some nice chunks
Prospectors hate finding Hot rocks, but you only deal with Cool rocks...! 😉
I think I love this ammolite
When we first saw your video doing an Ammolite-Pendant_ I LOVES ME some Ammolite- Opals/all Australian/Mexican - Fire Agates Aguascalientes/Deer creek/Slaughter MTN - Obsidian/Mahogany - Turquoise - Chrysocolla-anything in Turquoise-family
I have always wondered why amolites weren't prepped this way. It always seemed silly to me that they would be prepped with as soft a material as resin. After all, isn't this the way they prep thin opal? Thank you for sharing the process with us. This is something that is on my bucket list to try.
I’m wondering if all of this can apply to baculite as well? I realized pretty much everything I know about baculite I learned from you. You rock Theo! no pun intended😅
Absolutely for baculites well! 😊
If I didn't live in the UK I would have loved to of met you ❤❤❤❤
Hand sanding. I did not expect that.
you are very talented, ty for the share :)
Thx
Random thought...what would it look like if you put facets on the the quarts on top?
Great video, incredibly helpful! What level of grit for the sandpaper for the brittle ammolite? This is for it after it has cured.
Absolutely stunning! What grit are the buds you use to do this?
Quick question….. would you turn an ammonite/ammolite I found into a pendant? I discovered the wonderful world of fossil hunting a few years ago here in South Dakota and would love to wear one of my best finds.
Thank you! I dont like using epoxy. It can pop off a piece which is annoying. I like to hand polish using auto detailing sand paper. It looks so good after, very glossy. I noticed there is a 3d like effect in some spots, i couldnt get my camera to capture it though.
😳Daaaang 💎♥️
Can you suggest any public spots to hunt rocks along the Yellowstone River? Heading that direction soon and wanting to search the Yellowstone gravel in a public spot.
great video. Wet dry sandpaper? Sanding wet?
What sandpaper grit do you start and finish with?
We don't have ammonite in my area as far as I know, but we do have nautiloids. Can similar techniques be used on those?
Hiya! Just curious do you stabilize every one? Or are some safe to work straight away?. Thank you for your generosity. Have a blessed day
Theo, can you recommend a place to buy rough ammolite like these?
Hi Theo. Hey, I'd like to ask a question that maybe you can answer. I was near Cheyenne Wyoming, visiting a friends ranch. I found a rock, about 3 inches x 2 inches by 1 inch. It was pure, snow white and non translucent, at all. It had conchoidal fracturing, when I found it. I've had it in stage 1, with agate and chert, tumbling for about 8 months. This thing is super hard. (so many rocks have come out of that barrel since I started tumbling it.) It is finally, near smooth but has loss very little mass. Do you think you may be able to guess what it could be?
Wow, Theo those pieces look wonderful. I’m gonna have to check out your website. I need to get a couple pieces. I gotta get back into my stones have to I haven’t worked on them in over a year. I was heartbroken. I had some construction work done on the house and the gentleman. That would doing the work for this company get very light fingered and stole a lot of my stones I had in bags they went through everything and took what they wanted. I had emanates and large pieces of citrine, and I had some beautiful chunks of amethyst and chunks of. fluorite and it all disappeared. I spoke to the company and the guy goes. I’ll give it $200. I don’t wanna hear no more about it and that was the last I heard it’s like you owe me a lot more than that and he says his people don’t steal that’s why a six pack of soda disappeared from the refrigerator down in my work area and a lot of my stones disappeared. What do I need to put cameras in my work room?😢😢😢
What happens if you facet the quartz
Is the ammonite from Montana?
Could you describe your grit sequence?
I'm gonna assume you've got dust mitigation/precautions going.
Hit every level you have sand paper for,, and don't skip any, especially in the beginning. 60, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800, 2000, 3000, 5000, 8000, 10000.
Instead of using quartz, why not use epoxy resin?
Those are beautiful!!!
