This old man who lived through the 60’s when The Beatles ruled the recorded pop/rock music universe is getting the deluxe package, the 3 vinyl record package and the picture disc. One can never get enough of the greatest band ever.....even 50 years after the fact.

As an album, Abbey road is so much above and beyond its own time (the 60s) - so that the Beatles left virtually no chance forever for other musicians to get even close...

The reason I like the Giles mixes is because you can hear all the instruments so clearly. The bass and drums are so fantastic in these mixes.

The only track that disappointed me was octopus's garden. A Ringo song and, is it me? But the drums suddenly sounded muted.
I only listened once so far. Jury is still out on this mix for me. Some seem to come to life as does Pepper, and others still not so sure..
I couldn’t disagree more respect to Abbey Road sounding like a “ pop album “ . Abbey Road “ doesn’t sound like a pop album. It’s impossible to define as a genre . The orchestration among other things make this record unique in popular music . It doesn’t sound like a period piece , just impossible to define.

Pop isn't a genre. And it shouldn't be seen as a pejorative term.
She Loves You is a pop song. Eleanor Rigby is a pop song. Strawberry Fields Forever is a pop song. Abbey Road is a pop album. Arguably the only track The Beatles recorded that isn't pop music is Revolution 9. There are many genres of pop music. The Beatles spanned those genres, dipping into them, using them like a paint box, coming up with stuff like Martha My Dear, which is absolutely uncategorizable but absolutely the epitome of pop music. That's what made them special.
kenneth gerber one “problem” is that Giles Abbey Road sounds too much better that any other album of the late 60’...and 70’. THAT Macca Bass, for example, spread deepness and power than any other Rick 4001 in the subsequent rock history (Chris Squire de te fabula narratur). Another problem is that very few rock band nowadays preserves the original master tapes (f.e. the Atlantic records Big Fire in 1977 and the Universal Studio archives Fire in 2018) to try a “stilistic” comparison. Giles Martin’s remixes reflects the typical english approach for restoring the ancient master painter at the National Gallery: a very deep and scratchy clean till the original (or suppose to be original) techni-colours versus the continental and italian respect for the “patina” of the past. So comparing for example the same old italian master at the Uffizi, at Louvre or at National Gallery in London can offer three different autors...

Agreed, " I want you" is not in any sense pop, the medley itself encompasses different genres of music . The slbum does include some pop, but so did sll their albums.

Your review caused me to play my original copy from ‘69. It was first played on an AR turntable, then a Dual 1219, a Denon 62l and now a VPI Scout/Denon 103r. 50 years of cool.

The 2019 remixes I have heard sound way better in my opinion. I don't have a favorite album, just favorite songs.
I Want You (She's So Heavy) is amazing! The depth, the clarity, all the muddy-ness of the old versions is gone. Spectacular job Giles, can't wait for Let It Be!

With respects to Giles Martin, Alan Parsons got it right the first time.
104thDIVTimberwolf Alan Parsons didn’t mix the album. He was an assistant recording engineer on some sessions, but the original mix was a joint effort between Geoff Emerick, Phil McDonald, George Martin and the band themselves.
Well whoever mixed it, they got it right the first time.
I think the same sonic affect you describe here - the extra power and attack in the mix - was notable on the White Album remix last year too. Have to say, I absolutely adored it.

I’m glad they amp’d it up. I have been to Paul McCartney’s concerts and when he plays Beatles classics... they have so much punch... bass... energy. I’m glad they are capturing the dynamics.
FYI - Many people don’t know that Paul McCartney is one of the greatest bass players. Unfortunately it isn’t made present unless you’re at concert.
It's on Spotify & Tidal. My son has the 2009 vinyl issue and this seems to have more clarity across the board. It's like I'm hearing this album for the first time again. Ok guys, shut up & take my rent money for the vinyl release.

The Beatles don't fly around the room in the surround mixes it's like being in the room with the band. It's the surround mix for me every time.
Depending on using vintage quadraphonic receivers like my Sony SQD-1000 SQ decoder, it can added surround sound to all four speakers since this album wasn’t available on an encoded SQ record. The Beatles never put out any of the SQ albums during the 1970’s, because the original albums are in stereo only, not quad.

Thank you, Steve...Great insights! Love to hear other Beatles fans and their passion for the Beatles. They have been my passion now forever..It is now 2021. Side Note: When in Junior High, I and three other fans dressed like them, got guitars and pantomimed them on stage for a talent show. We turned on the 45, and we all began our impersonation of each Beatle. Our classmates in the audience stormed the stage. The principle got angry and made us all go to our respective homerooms...all the while, many classmates coming up to us and asking for our autographs...such was the popularity of the Beatles...but the music...that's the best memory of all.
I’ve only been hearing these songs for 25 years, less than you by any means. But it’s so exciting to hear something new, something that was in the original mix but hidden amongst all the instrumentation. I enjoy this much more!

For me this is definitely an improvement. I feel like I get a real connection with them, it’s like they’re giving a private concert. It’s like the Beatles playing in our modern age

For me the most amazing thing about the Beatles was hearing _Love Me Do_ back in 1962. I was gobsmacked. My teachers were enraged and declared that the band was a 9 day wonder and they would have all lost their voices from singing like that.

Revolver is my favorite album also and Love me do is one of their worst songs. Had this song been given to Peter and Gordon nobody would know it today.
The REVOLUTION was "Rubber Soul". And George said he remembered making "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" as if they were the same album.

Abbey Road is my favourite Beatles' album and it doesn't sound anything like a pop album. I also love the Beatles early records, with Help! as my favourite among them. I was 14 when I first heard Help! and there was no way back after that.

In My life Is one of The Beatles greatest songs yet was never sung in any of their concerts.
These new mixes are a revelation. A veil was lifted. They are superior to the 2009 remasters.

In addition to the “outtakes” it sounds as if theses Beatles remixes let you hear more bass guitar. After all these years it would be interesting to hear them in a different audio light. But they are ingrained in our consciousness in the way they are.
Got used to the Sgt. Pepper and White Album 50th versions, they're now my favorites, and the ones I listen to. Keep listening to Giles Martin's mixes and you'll come to prefer them. I'm hoping they do Revolver or Rubber Soul, but those were done on 4 track with lots of drop down tracks, so I don't know how much remixing can be done.
Danny Hoffman I agree. After listening to the remixes a few times, the originals seem thin and lifeless.
The original pre- bounce mix 4 (or, in the case of Abbey Road, 8) tracks were all preserved. They were digitized and synced with each other. The number of tracks on a particular tune would vary depending on how many bounce mixes were needed. Since bass and drums were generally tracked first, and had to survive the most bounce mixes (where 4or 8 tracks were mixed to one or two to make room for additional overdubs) they stood to gain the most in the remix process.
@@ajn465 yeah, sure understand that. But on earlier albums they did less multi-tracking; I 'm pretty sure on Rubber Soul and Revolver they did the basic instruments either together at the outset or if not they were were then bounced down to one track. The question is were any of those pre bounce tracks preserved? I don't think they were, and that makes a remix more of an issue. With the later albums they preserved all or most of the pre bounce tracks.
He did a great job with the stuff on 1 that was remixed in 2015, many of which pre-Pepper’s.
6:34 - I LOVE the out take of The Ballad of John & Yoko, especially Lennon's scat-singing at the fade out. It would've been good to have that on top of that already-excellent guitar riff at the end.

Hi Steve, thanks. Fully dig your comments on the difference between remaster and remix. I’d tend to lean more towards remix personally because it brings back the rock edge the band held dear on this record. I must admit I was smitten with the out take versions of the songs, in particular, I Want You, She’s So Heavy for the reasons you mentioned plus the added guitar and organ tracks. They take the song to a whole new wonderful level but to get some precious dialogue is gold !

I bought the original on vinyl when it was released and also had it on music cassette and CD which was amazing all those years ago and got a lot of playtime. I however didn't buy the remix but have purchased this 2019 version on CD. I personally love this album, it sounds very fresh and everything stands out better. It's hard to believe it is 50 years since the original release and it just goes to show that the Beatles music is loved as much today as it was all those years ago.
Abby Road is the album that turned me on to the "art" of the Beatles in the 1990's. Smooth, professional, inspired, soulful, and beautiful. I am not comparing verisons. I love my copy of the single disc vinyl because it is quiet and clear. I heard more than ever.

I remember watching The Beatles doing "Revolution" on the Ed Sullivan Show in, I believe was, 1968. I was 8 years old and my older cousin was a huge fan. We watched it together with our parents on our B & W 25" TV. So cool! I'll have to get this remix and check it out for myself. Where have 50 years gone?
I remember Revolution and Hey Jude being on the Smothers Brothers show. But that was many drugs ago so I could be wrong.....
My favorite version of this album is the reel-to-reel tape, purchased new in a military PX in Viet Nam back in 1969. Very good recording quality, still sounds crisp and clean after 50 years. Paul`s tasty bass work on that little Hofner stands out sweet and strong....
They did kind of get together in the 90s for Anthology and it was pretty good
I'm sure a lot of people that loved the Beatles like I do, will think that 200, 500 years from now, they will be considered the best band that ever existed and their music will live on forever. One thing I have thought about. Some songs always seem to be so well thought out and recorded that they seem like no matter how music changes and no matter how much time passes, The Beatles will always sound current and cutting edge. At the age of 67, to me? There will never be another band anywhere near as amazing as the Beatles. I hope that they continue to create remastered and remixed albums of the Beatles for a long time to come. Jimi Hendrix made 3 studio albums and 13 singles while he was alive and 138 Hendrix albums were made after he passed away. So with luck we'll be able to hear the Beatles music made new, different or should I say better for years to come.

I wish there was one more media here rather then the 40-year old Philips/Sony CD and the 70+ year old 62db dynamic range LP. It’s just as easy to “print” a DSD version of this and offer that at about the same price as the LP ( $30.25 ).
I have the 1987 Re-Master and that ain’t bad at all.
Those archived tapes at Abby Road at 50+ years old are getting to the point there the tape starts to break down. It’s best to do a really good copy to DSD and call it a day. I cross fingers that they have already done that.
I recall listening to some dubs from masters that were made in the early 70s. This would have been in the late 80s/early 90s. The oxide was coming off on the tape heads even though my engineer friend had made his dubs with the best tape you could get at the time. What you say makes eminent sense. As usual ;-)
@@jonathansturm4163 The biggest tape loss of course was the data tapes from the Lunar Landers. They were stored poorly and lots of data was lost.
I watched a Giles Martin interview and he said that he transfered the entire Beatles catalogue and all the individual takes to computer hard disk when he and his dad were producing the Love Album in 2006. So each time he does a Album Remix, all the takes are already in his Pro Tools System on his computer.
@@mjgoldcoast7894 I think, I hope, that these historical works are stored on some other media then the original tape. At some point, actually quite soon, the tapes will become unplayable. Or in such a degraded state they the qualit of the playback would be challenged
@@wilcalint Hi Bill. That's what Giles Martin has already done in 2006 as I said in my previous reply. Anything that the Beatles have ever recorded has been transferred to Digital Audio Take by Take. When Giles does a Remix he is getting the Audio from a computer and remixing the music digitally in a DAW Digital Audio Workstation in Pro Tools. The original Tapes probably haven't even been played since the digital transferring was done in 2006. It's all in multiple Hard Drives and Computers now. Giles could quite easily Remix the remaining Beatles catalogue without ever even needing to access the Tapes. I hope this information gives you pease of mind Bill. Cheers ☺

I listened to mine yesterday , sounded great . How will digital sound better than analog ? They can re-mix to bring different instruments to the forefront of the recording but with headphones and an equalizer it sounds pretty damn good already .
It sounds still amazing because of a high dynamic range.

Steve, I really appreciate your honesty about the Abbey Road remasters/remixes 2009 vs. 2019. I haven't heard all of the new remixes yet but yeah, I know exactly what you mean about the 2009 Remaster sounding like the original LP and being used to that original mix sound that most of us grew up on. It will be interesting to hear this new 2019 remix and how it compares to the original.

The main reason these remixes sound so much edgier is that back in the day they used 4 track and later for Abby Road, 8 track tape machines. To get everything in they had to layer tracks (or bounce them down is what they called it). This of course muddies the sound. With these 3 lp's they have the original source tapes and can thus lay them down individually cleaning up the sound and giving each instrument and voice it's own space. So you can hear those drum fills strike for strike etc. I think these new versions are what the Beatles would have done had they had the hardware to do it. I'm done with the old versions.
Can you please explain how they got more tracks out of the tape than are on the tape?
Today's music is more percussion and rhythm based, everyone is into the bass drop and the beats. I prefer to hear the actual song, the melody, the guitars and keyboards and vocals. I expect one day they'll release every track of every song to let people do their own remixing.

I was watching a BBC TV World News tech. show called, "Click" today, and among the various latest audio gizmos and features was a new system which allows concert goers to mix live their listening experience. Featured was a recent Elton John concert with the system installed. With a palm-type device and ear buds you can mix some 6 or so "tracks", isolating or highlighting vocals, percussion, lead guitar, bass, etc. while listening to the concert in performance. Personally, I think that could detract from the whole concert-going experience, especially given that the audio quality in today's high-end concerts is pretty darned good compared to years ago. One could end up fiddling endlessly with the mixer! Might be fun to try once though.

Thank you Steve for this review ! Having now the chance to compare those 50th anniversary version (Sgt. Pepper, The White Album and now Abbey Road) with the originals is good. We now have the chance to listen and compare them. Some days I feel 1969, and some others, I feel 2019. --- As you know, the human brain is curious, and it always want more and more and more...
I guess Apple Corps is committed to going down that slippery slope: expect the whole catalogue to be remixed over the next few years.

Great job I just got the vinyl package yesterday. On my vintage Marantz and Klipsch 600m I loved the fact I could hear more. I haven't yet compared to my 4 other pressing including the UK version. I will have to reserve final judgement. I too have been listening to Abbey Road for 50 years. Ha

I recently bought the waves plugin for my recording DAW which is a collaboration with Abbey Road studio and brings the main mixing environment of studio 3 so you can mix on headphones and have the virtual sound of that room/monitors , it works very well when you are working at home producing music.. Anyway I decided to have a listen to the new remix of abbey road thru the plugin as a bit of a listening exercise , I only have the streamed version at the moment so went with that: At first listen I was somewhat underwhelmed, it seemed a little thin and the treble seemed to have a bit of hiss and added noise there, it was then, about 1 song in that I realised I had inadvertently played the 2009 remix ! So anyway to cut a long story short, in this listening environment (thru cans in a “virtual” abbey road mixing studio) the new remixes sounded far superior (when I finally got to them!) They were warm punchy and well rounded in the high end; and a great listen.
The 2009 was a remaster, not a remix. Learn the difference.
What it goes to show is that the sound was always there on the multitrack tapes, now we are getting to hear it how it probably sounded over the monitors in the studio....just so much clearer. I know remixing Beatles tracks is contentious for some people, but I love the new remixes....and we still have the originals if we really want to listen to them.

I have three versions of this album. I have a half masted speed and Japanese Toshiba pressing vinyl. I also have the original us cassette tape it sounds incredible on a good set of headphones the drums really come out on that..
As a kid, this was my fav. Its got has a little funk, opera like medley, jazzy edge, pop. ...love it. I want you....oh, oh..yea..

March 1, 2021, just picked up the lp of Abbey Road remix and it's fantastic. Agree that the sound is rawer and hifi-wise shows a tight band that can rock. It's a keeper along with my original first pressing from UK. Kudos to the techs and producers of this fine LP. Thanks for the forum.
PS. Thought the remix revealed how truly lame ogarden and hammer are.

I agree with you. I've been listening to the original sound all my life. I have noticed that on the last 3 editions, for example, the endings on Strawberry fields, While my guitar gently weeps, and most recently Come Together, to me, sound a bit different from how I've been listening all these years. It's fun listening to the new remixes, they sound really good, but just not sure if they are my go to.
I asked a member of XTC about These big remixes in 5, 1 etc ,,,,He didnt sound impressed ,,,Thats a guy who knows ,,,I remember BOWIES m w s t was too hollow

Bought the 3 LP box today. Will give it a spin this arvo, can't wait.
I like the original mix. Not only because I'm used to it but that's the way it was ment to be heard. From what I understand, the Beatles had a major part in the final mix. I was not happy with the White album remix. I was disappointed when I heard Giles Martin say he didn't want it too Hi-Fi. So after that I didn't get my hopes up about Abbey road. I did enjoy all the alternate takes on it.
Just bought the limited super deluxe version, mostly cause I would have been disappointed not to have the 3rd cd of outakes and that final medley I think it is. I'd like the vinyl also, but without my rig here, I'm not rushing!!
Listening now...only up to Oh! Darling....I can comment...it sounds very 'clear' none of that mid muddiness that I recall from previous vinyl issues I own.
Also, I'm thinking the vocals are somehow a little more forward, at least that seems the case on Octopus Garden, that's on now.
Yup, better separation....'She's so heavy' can sound muddled during the busiest parts.

Idk..maybe this is all imagination as I've never listened to this album through my Elac navis previously.
Take my initial thoughts with a grain of salt, I'd need to really compare.
However, anybody new to the Beatles the basic cd/vinyl would be a fair starting place imo.

Sounded excellent on my mobile set up on my mountain climb.
I think Abbey Road generally was their best recorded album. So much of the technology had changed. They now used an 8 track for starters.
George's guitar work sounds gorgeous & 'Because' rather ethereal.
Again, hard to comment specifically if it's the new mix, but I suspect that's the case. :)
Great to hear your take on the remaster. Even Beatles fans, in my exp’, have only heard tracks from Abbey Rd, not the whole album. Its never rated as their best album but I played it to death as a kid and still feel it’s their best. It’s truly a Beatles/George Martin album. “And in the end”... It has a unity, variety & sound quality, for me, that their other albums don’t match. I always wondered why I was wasn’t as knocked out as my friends by Floyd’s DS of T Moon, when released in ‘73, though I enjoyed it. Floyd perhaps used Abbey Rd as a template to facilitate wider accessibility. Could explain why many see Dark side ... as Floyd selling out. It was recorded at Abbey Rd after all.
I agree with everything you said in this video. You gotta have both versions (the original mix from 2009 remasters and the Giles Martin 2019 remix).
