  • On this episode, we answer the question of whether you should always focus on “position before submission” in Jiu-Jitsu.
We discuss getting chokes without solidifying a position, using leg locks, advantageous positions that aren’t the “traditional”BJJ positions, the benefits of position before submission for beginners, how submissions are initiated through transitions, how tournament rules dictate the grappling style, a rule that is commonly broken in Jiu-Jitsu, and the importance of being coachable.

Great conversation today guys. I think of it like when Chewy references the "Learn to play the instrument and learn the chords and scales... then forget it all and just play"
How many times have you as black belts taught someone an Armbar? No exaggeration, it's in the upper hundreds to thousands by now. Teaching an armbar is a 15 step process, that you turn into one fluid motion and any white belt will say "That's not at all what it looks like when I go for an armbar". I look at it the same way, we've taught you the armbar, get really good at remembering the steps and then when you hit it in rolling it will never look like that.
