  • Common Problems With Model Steam Locomotives - Part #1. When a miniature Steam Locomotive has not been run for a while it is often not just a simple case of filling the Boiler with water and lighting the fire. It will require recommissioning first. This is what happens if water is left in the Cylinders.

This is basically what has happened to a lot of full sized display locos even ones that have been kept indoors all their life after decommissioning, the only loco I know of that has been brought down properly is the experimental Baldwin water tube boiler locomotive number 60000 which is on display in a museum in Pennsylvania.

2:45 At the shed, we call that 'percussive maintainence'. It's a recognised industry standard technique for getting a rail vehicle moving again.

    Woohoo! Ultra violence!

The zero gag aside, ever thought of adding an air storage tank so you have more air capacity while staying with your ultra quiet compress?

But then the compressors would be running longer and therefor making the motor noise for longer etc. I just find it better to live with it as it is and when the compressor motor kicks in, I simply stop recording the video until the tank is full again }:-)))

@@keithappleton I knew you had a good reason.

LBSC was opposed to feed water being introduced at the firebox end of the boiler, unless from an injector and hot. I would be interested in your opinion.

These days with modern materials, I don't think it matters.

Hey Kieth i have a set of drawings for a single cylinder steam engine. I would like to send you a copy of these, but bare in mind that this engine requires castings of the Home Made kind?! then has to built from Scratch you like myself would have find away , to either have the castings made for you with wooden plugy that your build yourself or you would have find a way to heat grey iron to the melting point for the castings. Their arw currently no furnace kits available these require a blower further its very extremely dangerious to handle liquid iron as it spashes and instant third degree burns , my solution to this is that i will mill the cylinder head and steam chest portion together is the milling process. I cannot mill the standard as it is a stuart type, so i am going to do is this make the standard cylinder then i will mount it to cylinder and weld it in place. which will require a square piece of cold rolled steal 3 and 1-4 wide the cylinder will be mounted to that square steel plate in the middle along with the bottom cylinder , to hold the entire steam engine i will make four threaded rods to bolt in the base and to the plate the standard and cylinder are mounted to their is no choice here i cannot mill the standard i could mill it as one piece but i would have use either aluminum or 12 L 14 plus milling a standard designed to be casted is a very long complicated process which would put me into acoma like you. Please give me your thoughts when you have time. Please let me know if you would like a copy of these drawings they are from i believe the fifties, this engines messurements make it a easy one to mill in imperial. Hope your well Keith and this usefull: Merry Chrustmas to you and your family my friend and colleague and Teacher: Daniel Ottawa Canada:

Hello Daniel, This is something I would not like to do. I have seen a video of a single cylinder engine where all the parts were cast. Not really what I am into. But thanks anyway for your kind consideration.

As my training is in programming, the first value you can store in a memory location is all bits off. In other words: zero. Therefore, you are doing it wrong. This should be part 0!

Yes I fully agree with your observation. Being an ex Computer engineer myself, I do understand what you mean. On the early music sequencers that I used to program, there was indeed always a 0 value parameter, but in later models the 0 was not used on the front end of the menus and I always had to add a number to my Program change parameter. The 0 parameter is still used in LSB, MSB Midi programming though. I do like to keep up with the times - so I generally start at 1 these days }:-)))
