I saw him in 1986 at Cambridge Folk Festival in a small tent accompanied by Danny Thompson, before they played I bumped into them strolling through the grounds. John Martyn was my idol and I had so much I would have liked to say and ask him, but I was painfully shy and was rendered practically speechless...managed to ask for their autographs, had nothing for them to write on so they both signed the cover of my folk festival programme that I had just bought, a treasured possession!!
I saw this gig. Chillin' on the grass, a sunny afternoon, about 3pm, pyramid stage, dead centre of the field, after a mouthful of mushrooms about an hour beforehand. OMG. John Wayne was awesome. Sometimes the man and the band hit it just right. This was one of those times. I used to have a cassette recording of this performance that I took from the original radio broadcast, but it went the way of so many cassettes, so thanks for sharing, philhonley. Made my day.
I remember and did exactly the same. I was dead centre of the field too!!....blissing out, though WITHOUT the mushrooms ha ha!! Plus I had a cassette taped off the radio too. Spooky listening to it again here. I know every single moment!!
I think I was sitting next to you man. Blissed out the same. Probably got the shrooms from the same guy. What a place to have been. Loads of space in front of the pyramid! Couldn't do that now could you? :)
i was there too ! i was sitting in the middle on the grass next to you guys ! full of hash toffee . who could ever imagine now that you were able to SIT and watch bnads at Glasonbury. ace times
I must have been close to you and the others guys on that afternoon. I too had a recording from the radio and was really glad that this recording was put out on CD with additional tracks from other concerts.
I was lucky enough to see him in a Glasgow theatre around this time... nice small place about 1,500 seats... and it was a similar set to this and just like your experience , John Wayne was stunning live... Weren't we lucky to actually get to see the man...!!
Me too, my last Glast before an ill advised return around 2002. Have concentrated on smaller festivals ever since. Went five times in 80s wnen you could still park on thee hill - and get bogged in if it rained!
This is available on CD, it's called BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert, it also includes 3 earlier recordings including a 15 minute version of Outside In which is superb.
Agreed, it’s also superbly recorded, only just bought it a month ago, still listening to it everyday. The “rock goes to college” bbc dvd is great too. Solo at reading uni & with a band in Scotland, just brilliant.
This is a great recording of this stand-out gig. John is at his best here, throwing emotion into every syllable. Outside in, Mad Dog Days, Big Muff, Dealer and John Wayne are devistatingly good. This whole recording, content and quality, is exceptional. Happy to say, like so many others here, that I was there. 22 years old, off my nut and having a ball. Great times. Always thought that if Simply Red or Johnny Hates Jazz had recorded Serendipity it would have been a big hit.
I just saw an article about John Martyn online and remembered what I had almost forgotten, I saw him at this, my second festival, I was 20. Thank goodness I don't have to rely on my memory. Thanks Phil, BBC and John and the band, this is a wonderful personal history.
Nice my friend. What an altogether altruistic soul you are. I was at Glastonbury 1986 and watched this concert along with Louden Wainright. What a time to be alive. Thanks for the upload. Made my day.
Brilliant. Thanks for uploading. I was there aged 17 & recorded it on my 'ghetto blaster' - I found the tape today whilst sorting out the loft. This is a far better recording & I'm really grateful for it. Thankyou.
SetList : - Solid Air - Bless the Weather - Love of Mine - Mad Dog Days - Dealer - Outside In - Big Muff - Serendipity - Looking On - John Wayne - Johnny Too Bad - Over the Rainbow
@@StevieFlynn The bass on this is outstanding..I was there & it was punching through me in its beautiful mellow way. sounds like a fretless , q Mick Karn at points the trills etc, the whole band were on fire, & John! what a singer, what a voice, what a song writer. I was lucky to see him many times & the last time I saw him was just b4 he died , literally months & it was sad to see him so unhappy & confined to a wheelchair. I went up to him @ rehersal & told him how amazing he is & a huge influence on me, & he nearly bit my head off. I apologised for intruding. This was at Connoly's of Leap in West Cork. He hadnt played live for a long time & things went wrong with the gear at the gig, so he ended it & did another the next night instead. Some idiot in the audience on the balcony upstairs was shouting " get up out of that wheelchair you ********.. " So disrespectful & ugly. I hope she was thrown out.
One of the best things by Martyn is the latest version of Lookin on ..seek it hereabouts Vicar St Dublin..you'll know because he is seated..he was under the weather but it was quite something
I was there. Coming down from an epic night, laid out in the hot sunshine bathing in his beautiful music ❤
Probably one of the greatest Glastonbury gigs of all time..Paul McCartney got nofing on this godly performance. A favourite recording of mine!!

Lookin' On at 30 mins - bloody hell!! I'm lost for words. Just exceptional.
Heavy version!!! Fabulous.
I was there and it was amazing. My first Glastonbury. Stood there in my long coat, transfixed and blissing out to this set. What a band.
Ive heard and seen him many times - and I have to say he played a blinder there!..and his band, blistering stuff...
Possibly his very best period from many. Over the Rainbow is an absolute joy.
Dave Dock I was there too 1986 Pilton and I agree it was a blistering performance, my friends in Granada Nicaragua love this song
I was at this! with my then 4 year old son on my shoulders :)

@@bendingspring Yes there is some seriously good vibes going on here, happy listening.

One of my best festival memories.
John Martyn was a true genius

I saw John Martyn in Manchester in '86, same set same band. He really was at the height of his powers.

Please post your ghetto recording! Even if the quality is terrible it's a fascinating memory object!
I saw the John Marytn band at the Glastonbury festival back in 1979 ' absolutely brilliant gig
I was there , got a sound desk recording the next day on cassette. :)
What a great band too...
Fantastic. That was a very special time. Thanks for uploading
Thanks for the upload, I was there too, and the weather was good, I remember the BBC filming the main stage, maybe get to see the video one day.
Definitely filming?
I would love to see some footage from this performance, I can hardly find any photos, let alone film/video.

Great bass player.

Total genius..Clapton was right - "so far ahead it was inconceivable " or words to that effect....

Hands down, one of the best to ever do it .
In life, in love ,in music .

commenting for my future self and anyone else who needs:
30:33 Looking On starts
Glastonbury Avalon 2000 any recording anywhere please
@ 10:00 …this is so heavy!
where to even begin?
Who was on sax Colin Tully ?
Indeed it was Colin Tully who sadly passed away in 2021
Prefer acoustic john pre 80s
Cool story
Like his voice but can't stand the 'wet fart' bass sound.
That was the problem in the 80’s. Wet fart bass.
