- At four am we were up, towing out what’s now known as "The Dock” in Bali for this concept shoot. We asked ourselves, what does the future look like? A cashless society? Self-driving cars? We’ll leave the wavepools for Kelly Slater and co. Instead, we envisioned lineup where you don’t have to paddle. Which turns out to be a rather dangerous affair.
“The dock’s been scary,” said Ozzie Wright. “At one stage I just came up, got my board and saw it coming right at me. I like the chaos of it. The whole time everybody was like, “Where are we going!? Where are we going!? That was the fun bit. I kept thinking what if the tip was on the beach at a little shorey? No paddling, just run out, jump on a wave surf it to the beach then run back out and jump on another one. That’d be so much fun.”
“It would just kill you if it hit you, yeah?” asked Noa Deane, after the fact. “What’s it weigh? Half a tonne? When it wears a wave on the head it kicks like a snake. Like, Balaram jumped up and went six feet in the air. Then he landed on the wire, so sketchy. It whips right at the end because it’s connected to a cable which adds extra tension.”

About 8 years ago I met Mickey Munoz at San Onofre, he was probably 75 at the time--he switched to SUP and was having a blast. I met Jeff Clark and he said he rides a SUP now at Mavericks, has a blast. I might have to try that, since I'm 58.

My uncle who lived in hawaii took me out in waikiki. Very calm waves and i caught about 3 good waves where i rode for atleast 10 seconds. Very fun

Beautiful to watch and the music works too ( in the beginning anyway). I’m always impressed with surfing because it’s like people are doing something that seems impossible but they make it look effortless

I knew a guy named Skip that used to stand on a rock in the middle of the point break at Todos Santos Islands at low tide, with 20+ ft waves, wait for the wave, then just jump onto the board, and tear off on the wave. This makes it more flexible, and you don't have to be Skip to get in on the action. Brilliant!

Man these are guys are sooo good. I lived in Cali for 7 years, got good enough to ride the waves a little bit... but for these guys to carve the water & go where they want to go instead Vice-versa, insane for 99%.
I’m lazy. Loved to surf but paddling out was such a chore. Oahu is where I lived and when I went to college in LA, I started skiing.
Chair lifts, gondolas, ropes and puma. Now that’s what I call having your cake and eating it too.

When I first saw this video of the dock, when it came out, I hadn't laughed that hard for that long in decades, doubled over rolling on the floor. What a great idea....
This idea of a plastic snake like flexy dock is so entertaining. And the spontaneity of the surfers to come up with hilarious high performance moves the whole time is so amazing.
I'd love to see more of the dock in the future. Of course it would have to be done more safely. A stronger rig and anchoring method, and fail safe non injurious components. And it would have to be easily removable, for bad ocean days, stormy conditions, or dangerous situations.
But I'm talking about, continuing and possibly expanding on the original idea here. Can you imagine how much fun, events, games, and contests could be with the dock. It could turn into a whole unique venue and sport. Like how the surf ranch has taken off. Maybe they could have special or side events at wave pools as well, due to the more controllable environment.
