Forgotten Years - Lyrics
Few of the sins of the father
Are visited upon the son
Hearts have been hard
Hands have been clenched in a fist too long
Our sons need never be soldiers
Our daughters will never need guns
These are the years between
These are the years that were hard fought and won
Now, contracts torn at the edges
Old signatures stained with tears
Seasons of war and peace
These should not be forgotten years
Still it aches like tetanus
It reeks of politics
How many dreams remain?
This is a feeling too strong to contain
The hardest years, the darkest years
The roarin' years, the fallen years
These should not be forgotten years
The hardest years, the wildest years
The desperate and divided years
We will remember
(These should not be forgotten years)
Our shoreline was never invaded
Our country was never in flames
This is the calm we breathe
This is a feeling too strong to contain
Still it aches like tetanus
It reeks of politics
Signatures stained with tears
Who can remember?
We've got to remember
The hardest years, the darkest years
The roarin' years, the fallen years
These should not be forgotten years
The hardest years, the wildest years
The desperate and divided years
We will remember
(These should not be forgotten years)

A real protest band. Fucking legendary
Exactly! Right on the spot!
One of the best songs ever written. Midnight Oil was one of a kind.
was? They're still around killing it. ;)
Really? EVER? Come on.
definitely ARB top 10 or better.
@@RisingTidesAC WHAT, everyone has a different concept of EVER (forEVER), Why should that matter? Wouldn't that be hypercritical.
@@RisingTidesACI'll agree with him. I'm actually in the process of compiling my personal all time Top 100, and this song is definitely going to be in it. And I'm a DJ who has played on the public airwaves. This song has grandeur like little else. You don't have to agree, but I do without hesitation.
EDIT: List finished. This song wound up at #33. I stand by it.
The world would be a better place if everyone just listened to midnight oil.
SO RIGHT!!!
Great music by hyper talented musicians and song writers, but if we listened to them the world would come to a stop and everything we know would not exist. That is what is wrong with liberal and woke ideology. They want to take away what the world runs on. Money, fossil fuels, free enterprise, etc. Sometimes people, wars are necessary to preserve peace and freedom. So no, Midnight Oil's political views were naive and not realistic in the world.= of the 80's and today. But I love Midnight Oil.
Thank you
@@RisingTidesAC There's so much wrong with left and right. Be a based centrist
@@RisingTidesAC you really don't get it do you?
I hate when people say Midnight Oil was a one hit wonder. These guys had a lot of great songs
they don't know their music. thats a ridiculous statement.
Wtf says that?
A: The ignorant
Are you also listening to Norwegian radio. 40+ years of music career, and still the only song those music experts know is "Beds are Burning". Nothing wrong with the song, but please, sometimes another one would be great.
Only to people that don’t live in Australia or NZ where they had heaps more hit songs
Their songs were always very popular in Australia and New Zealand.
One of their finest songs. Should have been a huge hit.
✌️🎶
Those rows of white crosses are devastating to see. Never forget.
My father (US Army) fought with Aussies in Korea and Vietnam - said they were the best warriors.
Another great song from a vastly underrated band
I believe that, about them being warriors. The Canadians are similar and if you question that watch Aussie Rules and Ice Hockey.
As a fellow American, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Britain. Those are our brothers and sisters. We owe a lot to each other. We have an ongoing cultural conversation. We share a language, a lot of literature and other arts. The Anglosphere is a fun place to be.
Just saying... but Commonwealth graves have markers not crosses. Those are likely US graves.

One of the best songs & videos ever made. Australian, USA or whatever country you are from. Never forget these years mentioned! 🇦🇺🇺🇸
The last few seconds, seeing the senseless loss of life with those thousands of graves makes me sick to my stomach. These guys did their job!
70 years old....early morning medication living in Colorado, and absolutely cannot contain my energy listing to Midnight Oil. Such an important band. Thanks for posting
good on you pops. love colorado mate. oils are great listening wherever you are.
Midnight Oil is a great medicine for all ages.
@@rojaws1183 Agreed!
Bewdy, mate!! I’m an Aussie living in SW Colorado too and the valley and mountains regularly get to hear Midnight Oil 👊🏼🙌
I'm sorry your state became communist. If you ever want to expel the Californian's just know that Aussies make good troopers.
OORAH, mate! This band sings TRUTH! Greetings from America! Or what's left of it.
WE send you love from australia BROTHER
Indeed, TRUTH! Amazing Aussie band! Actual R&R spirit of which so little is left nowadays, if any. Greetings from Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, where they played a few years ago. Sadly, I could no go (to my despair).
Blue Sky Mining remains one of the most meaningful and heartfelt albums of the "Me" decade. Thank you ♥️
Those rows of white crosses are devastating to see. Never forget.
One of their best ------ Midnight Oil - Forgotten Years
on ne doit jamais oublier ni le sang ni la douleur de nos parents qui se sont battu pour notre liberté.
Fantastic song by the oils,so powerful always makes me feel most emotional ,esp now I can fully comprehend the enormous loss of life, having visited Northern France and Belgium, the number of graves marked " unknown soldier, known only to God" and ages of the fallen really hits you. Most of the fallen are in their TEENS , some as young as 15 and 16. I think this song was inspired by drummer Rob Hirst, whose Grandfather served in WW1.
'"Signatures stained with tears, who can remember, we got to remember..."
This is one of their finest songs! They are one of the greatest Australian rock bands ever! And, doubtlessly, one of the greatest rock bands in the world! Thank you very much for your fantastic music, Midnight Oil! All the best and much respect! Rock on! 🤘
My American father served in WWII and came back with irreparable scars of which he rarely spoke and about which I knew better than to ask. I'm not sure I know what Midnight Oil meant to say with this video, but two things I know: first, thank God for those who gave their lives, their futures, their sanities (including the brave ANZAC soldiers of WWI and many others) for the freedoms we in the West take for granted. Second, God forgive us for irresponsible wars of choice such as Iraq.
Well said. I am not exactly sure what Midnight Oil means either. Probably that we should not forget the terrible wars of the first half of the twentieth century. You are right that the West should never have invaded Iraq. It is a terrible tragedy. There was no justification. There were no WMD. It was all lies. USA and UK used Iraq against Iran and the Kurds in the 70's and 80's before they turned on Iraq. Saddam Hussein was considered a bulwark against Iran and a man who held Iraq together. Despotic regimes like Russia and China use the war in Iraq as leverage to justify the invasion of Ukraine and China's likely invasion of Taiwan and point out the hypocrisy of the West. Amazing that until Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 Iraq was considered a 'friend' or bulwark by the USA against its enemies. This parallels the West's use of Hitler. The West saw Hitler as a bulwark against Communism. The evidence is Hitler was on the front page of TIME magazine in the 1930's and called Man of the Year! How quickly it all can change.
Scars of war never go away. God Bless him.
Another good one is the doors Unknown soldier, although, that was in 1967
I m pretty sure Midnight oils message in this song is NOT TO FORGET. as in the line" these shall not be forgotten years". If we forget about these events then the world is destined to repeat history.
well g w bush jr needed to draw attention away from there crime at the world trade center and silverstein plus dickhead cheney
The Oils are epic… Many hits in USA, Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the world. I can name 10 easily.
Listening to this song today in 2022 it´s like time never passed. How I love the 80s
This Song is more importent for this time, than any other one. Peace, freedom ans love.
Peter sings from the heart. You can’t help it be inspired when he sings. A truly exciting and exceptional vocalist.
This song is hitting so hard right now!! Thank you Midnight Oil.
'Diesel and Dust' is one of the best albums EVER. All the songs are excellent in their own right. It's like a PBS (public ed tv) special set to the most outstanding dance music.
Well just to point out, this song actually is from the album "Blue Sky Mining" (which is actually favorite of theirs, though yes, D+D was also brilliant).
To those of all of us born post 1945, we have been so lucky so far. No world wars. Walking through the cemetery in Kanchanaburi, Thailand for those allied soldiers who died on the death railway, I found my brother's mother-in- law's brother headstone. and like nearly every headstone there, he was only in his early 20s. We should never forget.
The politicians are getting restless now, we will just have to see what the future holds for us.
agree. and those who fell at the Somme a century ago...mostly young lads. a whole generation had its heart ripped out.
We have trump we are not lucky
I was at their recent concert in Perth and had a great time! The band was incredible, and this song totally brought the house down! 🔥🔥🔥
Bloodyhell I missed this one 😡😭 would have been AWESOME!! Glad you had a great time !! 👊😉🤙
Would love too be there. am so glad they are still playing. Bought all their tapes back in the early 90s . Went to Australia in 1990 and saw Phil Collins rather have seen the oils 🤪
Ten years ago I was planning my first trip to Australia, my bucket list being getting a ride on a 747 to Australia and getting into a cage with a great white shark (both crossed off), when it occurred to me that it would be great to sit down and have a coffee with Peter Garrett.
My favorite band is Rush, so I likes good lyrics, and even though I disagree with Peter's left wing politics, I love the passion he brings to his lyrics and his vocals.
He was an MP at the time so I sent and email to his office with my proposal and then went to bed. Much to my surprise when I got up there was a reply from his assistant waiting in my inbox.
He said that Peter was not going to be available on the dates I had mentioned but thanked me for writing.
I replied, "at least you didn't say he would be washing his hair," which elicited a thunderous laugh in reply... 🤣🤣🤣
I find it hopeful that even people from the us are still listening to his song. It's probably been one of the most essential Australian tracks in music history and it's meaning is more important than ever, especially to the Indigenous Australians who have been on Australia for more than 40.000 years.
I still love this song. One of the greatest songs ever written.
I wish we still made music like this.
These guys are timeless

Today is 11-11-2018. The 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI. I found out recently that military veterans don't mind the "Thank you for your service" salutation, but many prefer a handshake and the words "Always Remember" - because it means we're all in it together.
A classic song. Brilliant.
This charismatic voice touches the soul, words deeply touch the heart

Natasa- yes, alot of what you speak is very true, it's alot more complicated today...in WW2 -simple: there's the evil (Nazism, Empireal Japan) go destroy it. Hell, even the cold war conflicts of SE Asia and Korea seem simple to the mess we have now. And I totally agree: war in any form is a dirty, ugly business that has destroyed entire generations of peoples, the waste of what couldv'e been for so many young lives. It should be waged only in the very last resort, where the purpose is clear, it's cause a just one. However, when my nation called, I answered, and served mmy country with loyalty, and i'm proud of that despite questionable justification for fkighting.
+Natasa Goati Read your history books natasa! The gulf war was a multi-national effort by many countries to fight the aggression by Iraq! I don't know what your story is ,but If you know your history then you would know many American's died in WW2 while fighting the nazi's and helping to liberate Europe! Of which many of the European countries folded quicker than lawn chair's under the nazi's aggression. Spc 8th BN/158th AVN RGT,12th Combat AVN BDE ('Storm/'Shield Sep90-Apr91)
***** - I fought in the 1st gulf war, however, your argument has some validity. When the Brittish first came to the region, they set up the western friendly "puppet" government (Kuiwait sheikdom) basically over one of the biggest oilfields that historically belongs to the people of Iraq.

Midnight Oil should have been much bigger than they were. It says something about humanity: when someone says something of meaning or in this case sings something of meaning , no one wants to listen nor pay attention. It is truly a shame.
I like how when this band dedicates their music to real justice no matter how popular the song becomes...every song seems to turn into gold.

Australia sure puts out some really good bands. This is a fine example.
Rightly so.
BUT.
In this example PETER GARRETT, the lead singer, the BASTARD, did the following.
He sang about conscience, in all it's guises.
Then, he joined a Socialist/Communist Political party here in Australia, called the Australian Labor Party.
He was recruited by them so as to attract the ýoung' vote.
Whatever!, that's history.
My point?.
The Oils were approached, only Peter Garrett put his hand up for selection.
Once a Dog........
twinstu50 Sounds like you have some kind of issue with leftism that has nothing to do with Peter Garrett's conscience. Listen to a song like Blue Sky Mine. Who's always stood up for people like that? The workers. Was it conservatives? Was it people who went on and on about the wonders of capitalism? No. It's been socialists every damn time.
Of course, the Australian Labor Party isn't actually very socialist anyway, at least from what this American has heard of them.
I'm pro UK, but love the song "Sunday bloody Sunday". What can you do. I don't agree with anyone's politics. What you could do is write an equally catchy tune about from a capitalist position about how lefty hornswaggled the workers into destabilizing Australias industries and then sued you into bankruptcy while pretending to be the heroes who unite the workers on behalf of the communist in east Asia.
Jerimiah10 Weirdly, it seems like the only people who write good songs - like, ever, really - are people on the left. Almost like lefties are the only people who have souls. Haha not really, but damned if it doesn't feel like that sometimes. The bottom line isn't the only thing that's important. If a company can't afford to pay their workers a decent wage, maybe they need a better business model. Shit, maybe the world needs a better business model.
ALP are socialist/communist?
I'm pretty sure the actual Australian Communist Party would be highly offended by that
I saw them Summer of 1993 opening for the Tragically Hip in Agassiz , British Columbia Canada.Great memory
Thank you for not forgetting the forgotten ones , Individuals , the Forgotten years...we must always remember

Goosebumps. I actually studied and learned about Australian history after hearing the lyrics in this song many years ago. Clearly one of the most underrated rock bands of the 80s and 90s.....very, very few singers have ever put that much passion into their work.
