How crazy is it to see Julia nominated for a Tony?!?! Feels like yesterday that we were watching your Carrie vlogs together 🥺 I won’t be able to watch the show as I’ll be on the second day of the run in my production of All Shook Up!! Edit; I think it’d be cool if we had a category for replacement performers in long-running shows!
when i saw julia’s nomination i got so excited just thinking about seeing her on your past vlogs. while i didn’t get to see /her/ little red i can’t imagine it being anything less than brilliant
The biggest reason for my love of “& Juliet” is because Max Martin, the songwriter of all of those songs, basically wrote the Elder Millennial’s Teen Life soundtrack. I was in 7th grade when Robyn debuted on the charts with Show Me Love, and I was a massive Britney, BSB, and *NSYNC fan. Only Jagged Little Pill has had a similar nostalgia burst for me.
Shucked is GREAT comedy!!!! The puns!!! Amazingly complemented with fantastic choreography and superb singing. A couple of love stories with corn as a background.
I can't remember if it was the Golden Globes or the Emmys, but another writers strike interrupted the awards show and the awards were broadcast. There was no red carpet or anything, it was just local Los Angeles personalities (as I recall, newscasters the like) who would walk up two at a time to the podium, read the nominees, and then their co-presenter would open the envelope and announce the winner. It was no fuss, no muss, and I actually enjoyed it more than an actual ceremony with all the side-produce that comes along with it.
As someone who has a brain injury, I hope they start filming more shows like Disney did with Newsies and Hamilton. It makes it possible for me to enjoy watching a musical again.
Broadway on HD - some faves - Kiss Me Kate - She Loves Me - into the woods - sweeny todd (angela landsbury led, patti lupone semi staged) - les mis (3 diff concerts - 10th, 25th and semi staged) - Shrek - Legally Blonde - FOSSE - Company (semi staged)
The issue is no producer has as much money as Disney. They can afford to pay for rights to musicals and pro shots. Most Broadway shows don't have that luxury
I like how the nominations are fairly spread out this year, it’s nice to see how many different shows are getting recognized for specific things rather than just throwing all the nominations at one show
I am actually in New York right now and I saw 9 shows in 4 weeks. My trip ends in 2 days. I have seen a more "popular" and long running shows, but I did see &Juliet and Kimberly Akimbo and loved them both. I'll be happy if one of those win at the Tony's! And I have to say that you are a big reason why I got into musical theatre and i'm so glad you're here, posting again. I've been watching you for years. You are such a light in my life, thank you for everything!
I also saw it in Toronto and can second. I was already enjoying myself the whole first half and then the act one finale hit and I realized this is one of those shows where you’re just along for the ride of insanity. Very fun, would definitely see again.
I’m rooting for Parade so so hard. Saw Parade and Sweeney, and they were both so good. The reason I am rooting for Parade though is it’s such a relevant and important story and it NEEDS a national tour. Sweeney is already ensured that and Parade so far is not. A Tony would help ensure a national tour for such an important story. BTW, if you are in New York it is the show to see in my opinion. You will sob and be changed, it’s just too good!!
A lot of my friends in the trans community are really hoping Some Like It Hot doesn’t take home best musical. Many of them have told me that the show’s treatment of drag and gender is almost identical to that of Tootsie. I do hope we have more gender inclusive award categories in years to come not just for the Tony’s. It could really set a precedent for other award shows. Kimberly Akimbo is definitely a top contender for me but I’m also putting NY NY as a top contender too. It’s a show that romanticizes NYC in the best way possible. Also so fucking proud of Julia’s nomination I literally screamed at work.
Oh nooooo! that’s massively disappointing to hear re: Some Like It Hot. I was pretty confused when it was announced for this season & couldn’t comprehend how they would be able to tell this story without major changes. I haven’t seen it, but the bits I had read promised a more progressive approach- deeply disappointing to hear that they missed the mark (yet again 🙃)
I am SO excited for the Tonys this year! I feel like having it non-scripted will make for some very fun Ariana DeBose improv comedy. I’m also seeing Parade and Sweeney Todd next week, so I’m hoping that at least gives me some input into the revivals. Love you Kat! ❤
My voice teacher actually got to see the Camelot revival (because her son actually had his broadway debut as a swing for that show!) and she got to see Shucked as well. She told me that it was a very laugh-out-loud musical, one where they apparently made a lot of very edgy jokes in spite of our current social climate; she did say, though, that they poked fun at everybody, so no one seemed too offended lol.
When I read the nomination list, my poor boyfriend was on call with me and had to deal with my emotions. As a Jewish person, having Ben and Micaela nominated for Parade means so much. My opinions on Ben Platt have changed over the years but seeing his name on that list took me right back to the first time I watched his Netflix special. I've been a fan of Michaela since the Cher show so I was so proud. I also screamed because I love Christan Borle with all my heart so that caused a lot of emotion. I am a HUGE Annaleigh fan so another exciting nomination. As someone who has Falsettos on her Spotify wrapped yearly, Brandon Uranowitz was a welcome surprise. I have seen Glee too many times so anytime I see Alex Newell's name, I scream my head off. The worst of my screaming was when I saw Julia's name. I think I said something like "OMGMYFAVOURITERUclipsR'SFRIENDISNOMINATED", then when I stopped freaking out, explained to my boyfriend why I was excited. There is the usual discourse about equity and diversity that as a white cis woman, I can't comment on. All I can say is I'm trying to listen to impacted communities and do what I can to amplify their voices.
i watched your video, realized the tony awards hadnt happened yet, looked at my callender, realized i have a show then, so disapointed. also congratulations to julia, im using her story of going from community theatre to the tonys as a reason to keep acting.
Definitely was pretty happy with the nominations overall! Was disappointed a couple featured performances weren’t recognised but those categories were so stuffed in such a great year. Rooting for Parade for revival but would be happy with any of the nominees (apart from maybe NYNY but I think it’s the least likely) winning for best musical. There’s not really any ways to watch internationally easily either so will just have to hear the results.
Without a Doubt! Kimberly Akimbo is taking home the top prize of Best Musical as well as Lead & Featured Actress, Score, and Book. Maybe Featured Actor? (Justin Cooley) Some Like it Hot will take home Lead Actor for J Harrison Ghee, Choreography (HANDS DOWN!), and maybe some of the technical categories. Michael Arden will win Best Director of a Musical for Parade Featured Actor is virtually a toss-up between Alex Newell and Justin Cooley. Can't tell! It's been a great season overall!
I’m excited for the Tony’s this year, but the only snubs I notice were Jordan Fisher and Gaten Matarazzo from Sweeney Todd! Overall I’m excited to watch it 🎉
Really hoping Shucked will win best musical (and to sweep) altho it will probably go to Some Like It Hot For best musical revival I want into the woods but it will go to Parade Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee better win their respective categories I want Julia to win but then again I want Bonnie and Ruthie to win too. Such a stacked category The WGA is now asking their members not to appear on the show and if a WGA member wins to use either pre-taped speeches or have someone else speak in their place, per Deadline. So it'll be interesting how short the show will be 👀
Excited to see less bantering at the Tony’s. It will be a shorter broadcast. Will be interesting to see who wins Best Actress in a Play. Powerhouse catergory with Jessica Chastain for A Doll’s House vs Jodie Comer in Prima Facie. Saw A Doll’s House in April and will see Prima Facie in June. New York, New York should take several Tonys in tech categories (set design, ligting, choreography, at least). Was disappointed that Anna Uzele was not nominated. Not a fan of Into the Woods, but interesting that multiple Sondheim musicals are nominated for Revival. Enjoyed Sweeney Todd so maybe that will win.
Ben Platt should win for his incredible acting and singing in Parade. Full stop. Parade's not a "fun" show like some of the others but so powerful and beautiful (and has original music). Love me Sondheim but let's honor this wonderful production.
okay the tony's could split performers into these categories, with leading and supporting for each: best performer, and best new performer. best performer would be a gender neutral version of what the actor/actress categories currently are, and best new performer could be a replacement in a production. also, add swing/understudy and ensemble categories already!!!!
WGA have asked wga members to not attend now & pre record a speech incase they win. Wonder what will now happen with performance due to that if there's some who are members. Maybe they should all pre tape a performance in their theatres & just play them on the night & just do the awards.
I feel like instead of gender they should break down acting nominees by new v. revival because creating a part and recreating a pre-established role are two very different beasts to conquer !! Another way could be style of show, because really comparing an operatic roll to a rock musical is REALLY hard -- and it might encourage more contemporary writers to go a classic route that this queer classical singer would LOVE
Well my first like is seeing you again after over a year of no RUclips access thanks to glitches with them. Second like is Christain Borle and all associated with Some Like It Hot. Third like, and one I'm most hopeful for is Sweeney Todd. Yeah for Josh and Annaleigh.
I was deeply disappointed that SLIH got any nods outside of J Harrison Ghee, especially with how messed up the Joe/Josephine and Sugar plot is (and that Christian Borle apparently also wrote some of that material).
I saw Kimberly Akimbo the day before opening on broadway. What an AMAZING show! I also saw Into the Woods! Great performances from all and the coolest interpretation of milky white and the giant I have EVER seen!!!!!!!!
The first 100 people to use my promo code KATSTEELE40 will get 40% off their first order of Hungryroot at bit.ly/3Rvacje !!!
So now I understand why Leah Michelle didn’t qualify for funnygirl
Katherine, PLEASE talk about the Wicked movie in the next video, I BEG OF YOU!!!!! 😭😭😭😭

Edit; I think it’d be cool if we had a category for replacement performers in long-running shows!
Tony award nominated actress Julia Lester just flows right off the tongue. LET'S GO JULIA!!!!
Shucked is about family, community and most importantly CORN. The humor is very “Hee-Haw” inspired and Alex Newell may most likely win Featured Actor.
when i saw julia’s nomination i got so excited just thinking about seeing her on your past vlogs. while i didn’t get to see /her/ little red i can’t imagine it being anything less than brilliant

welcome back queen !!
btw loving the lob look in the sponsored section
I’m rooting for Besty Wolfe in & Juliet! I was her student in her program Broadway Evolved for two years and she was so lovely ❤
I can't remember if it was the Golden Globes or the Emmys, but another writers strike interrupted the awards show and the awards were broadcast. I know the Tony Awards won't be this paired down, but still, it could be the making of the ceremony.
As someone who has a brain injury, I hope they start filming more shows like Disney did with Newsies and Hamilton. It makes it possible for me to enjoy watching a musical again.

@@jurney3478 blame EQUITY - its why Spongebob was filmed in UK even though it was broadway cast
A kat video post?? Such a dopamine boost 🎉🎉
We have been blessed with a video!
I like how the nominations are fairly spread out this year, it’s nice to see how many different shows are getting recognized for specific things rather than just throwing all the nominations at one show
Not me tearing up when you were talking about Julia
I feel like I’ve known her since you have🥺
I am actually in New York right now and I saw 9 shows in 4 weeks. My trip ends in 2 days. I love the fact that New York New York won for best scenic design. Especially for Natasha Katz who won best lighting designs for Sweeney Todd.
I’m rooting for Parade so so hard. Saw Parade and Sweeney, and they were both so good. Christmas came early with a Kat Steele video! Thank you !!
I had no idea Kat knew Julia Lester so well, what a wild concept (I haven’t watched very many of her vlogs, and not any from that long ago)
This year is STACKED with beautiful shows!!!! I’m so excited! And I’m SO PROUD of Julia too ❤❤❤ I’m so happy for herrrrrr

The fact I won’t be able to watch The Tony’s live because I’ll be at a Moulin Rouge themed restaurant seems very fitting
I’m so excited for Julia! I’ve been watching HSMTMTS!
So excited to see you back!
My voice teacher actually got to see the Camelot revival (because her son actually had his broadway debut as a swing for that show!) and she got to see Shucked as well. Thespians are amazing I Love The Theatre 🎭
Shucked is incredible!!!!
early! so glad you’re backk ^^
AHHH You got to see MJ's Little Shop?! So jealous. The recording of Suddenly Seymour is so good ;0;
I did!!! Absolutely stunning 😍😍

The lack of Sweeney love in this video sort of hurts my heart?! Little surprised, given your love for Sondheim!
I am happy with all the nominees except
Adrianna Hicks and Anna Uzele were robbed of a leading actress nomination
Tony Award Nominee Julia Lester
Ben Platt should win for his incredible acting and singing in Parade. Full stop. Parade's not a "fun" show like some of the others but so powerful and beautiful (and has original music). Love me Sondheim but let's honor this wonderful production.

Some Like It Hot is cowritten by Amber Ruffin. My pick.

How can I watch in the uk
is it true the tonys are in a non iatse theater this year? if so, why?
I like cheese 🧀
I was deeply disappointed that SLIH got any nods outside of J Harrison Ghee, especially with how messed up the Joe/Josephine and Sugar plot is (and that Christian Borle apparently also wrote some of that material).
Do we think Phantom will come back as a revival solely for the nominations?
shucked is about corn, and Alex newell will win the Tony for it
im so excited to continue my six year tradition of watching the tony awards with a friend!! ❤ saw & juliet and loved it!!
RIP BAD CINDERELLA
A friend of mine saw Shucked and thought it was corny.
Shucked got really good reviews. It’s a Hee Haw musical comedy with very corny jokes. Literally and figuratively.
After last year I won't watch a Tony awards again.
If we keep rewarding jukebox musicals they won’t stop making them. You wanna write a musical? Write some fucking music.
I saw Kimberly Akimbo the day before opening on broadway. What an AMAZING show! I also saw Into the Woods! Great performances from all and the coolest interpretation of milky white and the giant I have EVER seen!!!!!!!!
Shucked seems very interesting
