Hiya! I had this idea a while ago and I wanted to give it a go. It's the most stupid video I've ever made but I hope you enjoy. I did this on dolphin so I'm not sure if the Wii could handle that many Larrys.
Next, I'll probably do a followup on NSMBW Low Score as we have made some new developments! Not sure when that'll be, though.

You probably noticed that the game runs smoother when they're all standing still, this is because the slowdown happens from having way too many fireballs on screen as apposed to how many Larrys. Yes having too many Larrys/polygons on screen will crash, but the fireballs speed up the process. This is also why Mario throwing fireballs would sometimes crash because he'll just barely push the limit.
Interestingly at some point Larry's fireballs stop using their effects when too many are on screen which results in a darker shade & no fancy fire trail.
In general, New Super Mario Bros Wii can handle way more detailed models than what it actually uses. For example Bowser's model, which is typically 10x the polygon count of other characters, can be ported over various enemies and not slow down the game...at least when there isn't like 15 Bowsers on screen at the same time. Even then, it's impressive just how many Bowsers it takes for the game to actually crash. Results do differ if you're playing on Emulator, Wii or even the Wii U.

Not with simple level editing the way this was done, but it would be interesting to see if they did it some other way
I'd think the maximum you'd be able to get is 4 by reskinning the three other characters and just binding the controls of all four players to one controller
Though all your assumptions would be very correct in a normal situation, there are actually very buggy Mario controllers that can be used to get multiple Marios in. Sometimes they mirror player movement, sometimes they do nothing at all and most of the time your game crashes. Very fun stuff
