Great review and demo ... the music at 6:15 made me feel like I was on a bad acid trip .. I snapped out of it when it the music abruptly stopped. Thanks for the review though!
1. Can you edit the translated text 2. Does it spell check translations 3. Can you add keywords or highlight key phrases 4. Can you search all notebooks by keywords 5. Can you date documents 6. Are there custom templates possible 7. Can you add a hierarchy/ index to notebooks
For me at least, I also have questions around workflow. Like, what filetype is output if you upload to pc / dropbox? What does editing an EPUB or PDF look like (if you can do so)? What does exporting notes from an ebook look like? I guess hardware fiends like me are just.. well, obsessive fiends haha!
That diagram feature might be good for drawing electrical schematics and then converting it into a clean image before placing it in Dropbox to later be printed.
This went over taking notes in their basic and advanced notebooks, but not what happens when I take notes in a book/pdf. If I draw on a pdf or other ebook, mark it up with comments in the margins on 75 pages and highlight 22 pages in a 630 page book. What now? Can I look them up, bounce from note to note, or search through them? If I highlight sections of an epub, can i export those sections of text, or at least move through the ebpub from each highlighted section to the next for studying? Does it create an index of highlights and/or notes? Is this sort of functionality present or are they just there somewhere in that long book and I have to flip page by page by page to find them? If I have 500 books in my bookcase, can I see which ones have notes in them? Can I toggle the notes on/off in an epub so they aren't distracting while reading or would i have to do that page by page? If I use a program like Calibre to manage my books, do the changes/markups in epub/pdf files synch back to Calibre as a 2nd version of the pdf/epub? If I have a marked up pdf/epub, delete it from Elipsa after synching back to Calibre and then reimport at a later date, do i loose all my markups and notes?
Kobo has a 30 day return policy if you order directly from their site. I think the only way to really know these details is to just try it. I keep hoping to find info on this sort of stuff too.
Thank you for the review! It would be very important to see how the export process works, and to know at least in which format the notebooks are exported
There is one glaring omission from the video. Exports. Yes, you mention a little bit of the export options but for example you don't mention the export FORMATS available. And most importantly, you don't show (or even mention) the results of exports. It would be interesting how well they export (be they PDFs or the notebooks you create on the device).
When taking notes on an E-pub, does the circles and other marks adjust as you resize the text. On the last video, it's shown to remember the placement of the marks (as you switch between pages), but no test was done to see what would happen if you adjust the size of the text. Also is the notebook exported in PNG? (I'm assuming yes) Also, I know with my active stylus, I have to take the battery out when I'm not using it or the battery would be drain, if I let the pen sit to long.
It doesn't. According to Kobo's help page, if you resize they will indicate that there's a note there. If you click on the icon it will show you the original formatting with the note and give you the option to restore it to the formatting you had when the note was made.
I wish you would just write. In none of your videos do you include just simple note writing. Not scribbles, not just one random word to show a function, just write a few lines of text... Like a normal person taking notes would do. Please.
I have a question about note taking on PDF documents. Does the device treat the notes, and the PDF file as two separate layers, so I can turn off the notes when reading the PDF? I read a lot of technical documents and would like to be able to include/exclude the notes when needed.
I would like to hear from you on the specific capabilities of the capacitive digitiser. How much lag does the device experience when taking notes with the stylus? How does it compare with other eInk note taking devices? Is it something that may be improved further in upcoming software updates? Another comment has signaled that note taking shows more latency in the advanced notebook than in the basic notebook. How does it perform when taking notes on epubs or pdfs? Does the memory size of the ebook affect performance? What about a very long notebook? And then, I would like to have your say on all the above questions regarding the fidelity of the strokes.
Is it just for me or in the part where you switch from basic to advanced firs you stay back in basic but say advanced and then switch to advanced once again?
Hello, thanks for the review. It was helpful. I wanted to know if the writing experience is like paper and pen. This is very important to me. Let’s say you write 2 or 3 pages. Can you notice any difficulties compared to normal pen and paper. Thank you.
Very nice review. You convince me to cancel my Amazon Kindle Scribe pre-order and buy the Kobo Sage. But what’s with the strange music at about 6:15. I thought the audio in the video was somehow corrupted, so I stopped watching.
Hello crew. a small snag I think. This video is posted with the date of 4/06/2021 which buries it before the official Elipsa review video. I am not sure if this is correct or some SNAFU, just bringing it up to you.
I am wondering about the writing sound of the pen. My son is son is super sensible to sound and this is for him. It seems like the pen has a kind of clicking sound or am i crazy? Is the sound of the pen as smooth as the RM2? How is the writing feeling?
I have two questions, please: has it digital keyboard to write with instead of handwriting? And else: converts them (both handwriting and typed text, if it exists) into editabile text?
Thanks you for the review ! I’d like to know if you can open a textbook AND an ebook or pdf at the same time like one part of the screen showing you the ebook and the other part with the booknote so you can write on it while reading ?
I would have liked to see how the file gets exported. As in, what file format does it do? how do the notes and drawing show in MS Word or any other document reader. Etc. But this was very interesting. Thanks.
I as well. Such as converting handwriting to text. Then exporting via Dropbox. Can that text then be cut and pasted into, say fields in a therapy note application.
Hello! I am wondering if I could create my own custom page notebook by making a PDF on my laptop and then exporting it to the Elipsa as a document to write on. Thanks!
On the Kobo website it says that it uses my script. On the ipad its nebo which is the same company. I love nebo for notes but ipad has to be charged everyday. You can also bold the text in the notes by just underline the word. You can also move a heading or sentence by just tapping one to move to another place on the page.
Thanks for your extremely helpful reviews. Can you tell me if the Kobo Elipsa allows one to save my files as text and then search all of my notes or files for a keyword? Or perhaps just a title or file name, right on the tablet? I understand that I could search my computer once exported/imported but I want to know if I can search the actual tablet. Thanks!
Sorry you didn’t get everything, you actually missed a huge set of use cases. Please answer Joshua’s and Mathew’s questions, they covers a ton of things a lot of us want a device like this for...
2nd question... I’ve been looking for a note taking app that will allow hyperlinks... what I want to do is take notes and on selected entries I want to create a hyperlink that will create a clickable table of contents at the beginning of the note app ... the clickable table would show the title of the note which when “clicked” would forward me onto that specific note.. Have you heard of such an app or such a function on any note taking eReader? If not, maybe I could bug Kobo to write that fiction into their note taking app. Again, your response is appreciated.
Wow. Different from what I was expecting. It seems that the "basic notebook" is more in line with what I have on my Likebook, and then the "advanced notebook" looks more in line with Evernote considering how everything's inline and stuff like drawings and equations have to be added by first selecting an option in a menu. (Edit: on second thought, the "advanced notebook" looks like it might be more in line with Microsoft OneNote)
Nice video, thanks. Are you able to export to other cloud services besides Dropbox? For example I use pcloud, or next cloud, or Google drive? Thanks again great job
No, unfortunately not. We showed exportation twice throughout this video, one at the beginning and one at the end. Your only choices are Dropbox or the device itself
I planned to buy myself a ReMarkable before going into Highschool, as it seemed like a good note taking tool and a family member had recently gotten one. She said amazing things about it, but after checking out prices, it was way out of my price range. Especially because I had to buy the stylus/case separately for insane amounts of money. No thanks. Earlier, I was shopping around for a new E-reader before I start highschool, since during lunch I like to read, and I’m currently reading Stephen King books, specifically It. I didn’t want to lug around this heavy book in my backpack all day and then struggle to read while eating, especially with the worry of getting it wet/dirty from food and drinks since I’m extremely clumsy. At first, I was just going to buy myself a Nook, since I had one when I was a kid and remembered really enjoying it. But I was watching RUclips videos on if I should get a Kindle or a Nook, and eventually discovered Kobo. I knew the note taking function was there, which is literally so amazing because I love to take notes in books while writing but always feel bad for writing in books when people wanna borrow them (I hate when people make comments about *my* comments. Like, they’re my own thoughts???) I wanted to learn more about the note taking function and see if it was worth it, and I’ll definitely be snatching this up to read and take notes in high school! Thank you so much for this!
Fantastic review!! I have some questions: How long is the battery life? I use it to study and i write for a long time. It arrived a free data ago and i already had to recharge it. Maybe because it was the first charge cycle? I don't want my device to be faulty. Thanks :)
Personally I find just tapping notes using the keyboard (on Kobo Libra 2 and Kindle Paperwhite - I have versions 2 and 3) enough. The kindles are especially useful when paired up with Kindle Mate to export the notes. I haven't yet found an equivalent for the Kobo.

While this seems like a nice device, aside from battery life I can't see why you would get this rather than an ipad. Even if you are concerned about battery life, you could just bring an external battery charger or two, or even a small solar panel if you are off grid for extended times.

It’s about importing writeable PDFs from other eReaders, specifically the Sony DPT....PLEASE answer it if you can or at least respond with something.. here it is... I have the Sony Digital Paper System DPT-S1, it’s a great note taker and I suppose the largest screen on the market (13.3”). Apparently there are different formats of writeable PDFs and each tablet can use a different one and not support others. Now I want to get the KOBO Elipsa cause it will convert my handwritten notes to text, but I still want to transfer all my Sony DPT-S1 handwritten notes to the Elipsa as well either to just view them but also to possibly convert them to text as well...do you know if the Elipsa will properly support PDFs from my Sony device. (Or any other note taking devices) You guys must have both devices, can you check this out for me ? I would really appreciate it, thanks
Oops... when I said notes from the Sony didn’t format properly tp the Remarkable 1 due to there being different PDF formats.I may have mis-spoke. I find it weird that in the advanced notebook it's not possible to use the highlighter on the "translated" text. That would make just so much sense!
