This is such a brave thing to do Maddie! I think having mental health issues can be blown out of proportion massively due to the fact that people can be harsh about other peoples stories and can be pretty negative about it. In no way am I saying that its good having a mental health problem but its a individual problem which a lot of people face! You have told the truth, you've been positive and you've been incredibly repsectful to peoples feelings. This is such an inspiring thing to do and if this helps anyone I am super happy to be part of your little family here on youtube!! I love you so much xxxxx

this is the first video of yours that i have ever watched entirely and i found it weirdly comforting to realise that I'm not alone. literally everything from your parents not noticing, to the diagnosis's taking years to actually properly being recognised reflected my life and what i have been through, so thank you for sharing that and i am so happy you're on the path to recovery. you're beautiful and amazing and i wish you all the best xx

Your videos are so helpful for me. I've dealt with/am dealing with some of the things that you mentioned in your video and it's so nice to see someone talk openly about it and show people that they're not alone, which is so important. I was always made to feel alone, so these videos are such a big help to me, and so many others. Hope you're doing well xxx

Hi Maddie! I've been watching your videos for a while, and followed you on social media throughout this time as well. I've watched you on this crazy journey that you're on and I'm honestly so incredibly proud of how far you've come. Everyday you achieve so much and stay so strong. You're a true inspiration to people out there with mental health problems because you show people that the best is yet to come. To be honest, I just really want to thank you for sharing this story with your viewers, I think it's really helpful for people to understand this and for the stigma to be removed from it. You should be proud of what you've achieved, you're grown so much and gained so much from what you've experienced even though I know how hard it is has been for you.
I love you and your videos, carry on being a true inspiration and role model for all those watching. Xxxx

With the ease you talk about your mental health history, in my mind is how you change stigma. The stigma is, the conversation is too heavy and hard to talk and listen, so for you to do it with such ease, is how stigma changes. Hats off to you!

I've been following you on social media for such a long time now and its amazing to see how far you've come - i remember the old floral accounts and charity shop loving days☺️ So proud of you! 💗Your advice videos really do help, i think it makes such a difference to hear it from someone who knows exactly what its like and has (sadly) been through the same, than from someone who just has to assume what its like. It took me a long while to open up to someone about what i was going through but i feel like i've really shut myself away again and i can see myself going back down the same road. Seems much harder for me to pull myself up a second time round. I don't trust people enough to tell them anymore (turns out some people were just nosey the first time). I've isolated myself so much that its hard to find someone to tell. Could you maybe do an an updated anxiety video? (if you've learnt anymore tips/things that help since your last one) - anxiety is literally my biggest issue right now and is totally spiralling out of control, like i don't have a job because of it and that in turn has made my depression/SH issue so much worse. Honestly though, this was such a helpful video, thank you for doing it! 💗

Hi Maddie, I really admire you for posting this. I was an inpatient for 10 months in 2013/14 (I was suffering with psychosis among other things that wouldn't go away when my psychotic symptoms did, if that makes sense!) and I totally relate to not feeling connected to anything/one. I was horrible to my family away and completely pushed them away, looking back now, it breaks my heart that I cared so little about myself and my happiness and them. Like you said, there is this whole world of units and so many aspects of mental illness/hospitals that people just don't know about until it affects them or someone they know. Lots of love and I'm so happy to hear how far you've come- you should be proud of yourself xx

A really interesting thing you said was like you're now moulding yourself into who you want to be. I definitely feel that. I no longer look at the mistakes and negative things from the past. More and more I look at the future and what's possible for me. It really sucks and is all too common that people like yourself have bad experiences with doctors and therapists when they seek help. I never trusted doctors or therapists and when things like that happen it only makes it so much worse. Your story is really eye opening especially for people who don't understand self harm like myself. You're helping so many people. Thanks for your support with my mental health project as well. You are an amazing human being!

( it might make sense... when you're like really old and finally work it all out) just keep it to yourself, i get stinked often, laundry bills... i get out of it, these dumb dumb want money for drugging me up, well i feel angry, a reason to make things right, gets me out of bed. Anyone trying to make money out of me. Makes me very angry.

I obviously don't want to go with italk now after remembering why I recognised the name, but so many people say I should get counselling... I don't know what to do! xx

It's so important to get help, I looked after my mum who had depression for four years and towards the end of her having depression, I got it, but I didn't tell anyone I just self harmed, and people say it doesn't help, but it does. It's not a solution but it helped for a bit, then I met my boyfriend and he was like, why though, you have everything to look forward to, and that jump started something in my brain and i've not self harmed in 3 years. It's really important to share, but sometimes this isn't always to your parents. :)

Thank you for sharing! I went through a similar experience. My teenage years were pure pain and despair. I was losing my identity slowly but surely (due to anxiety disorder, severe depression, ED), but also because I receive bad treatments at psych ward and it went further down from there. I just wish no one has to go through what I went through in the future :O I am now rebuilding my identity :)

Thank you so much for sharing this. I suffer from depression and anxiety and used to self harm, too. I also had some eating issues. Unfortunately in America, Mental health isn't taken all that seriously and our system is very broken. I have my own horror story when I was at rock bottom. Anyway, thank you for sharing. It means a lot to know that I'm not alone.

I suffer from bipolar disorder and panic disorder with agoraphobia. I have also been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder too, which I honestly don't really know what to think about it tbh... When I was 16 I asked my mom for a dog for Christmas to help with my depression and loneliness and at first she was like NO absolutely not. Well she went behind my back and started looking up puppies online and came across a female chinese shar pei. She fell in LOVE with her. At that point she knew that she had to get her for me. So a week or so after Christmas passed she was telling me she wanted me to go on a trip with her and my grandma and I didn't trust it at all because the last time they asked me to go on a "trip" they fooled me into going to the mental hospital when I was very ill and psychotic. So since I didn't trust going with them my mom had to break the news to me instead of it being a surprise and told me we were going to go on a trip to get a puppy. Omg I cannot even tell you. I will never forget the moment I saw my sweet babygirl Azyia (pronounced Asia, what I named her)... She was the last pup and she went and hid underneath the kitchen table and I told her "It's okay baby, no reason to be scared." She had seen all of her other brothers and sisters taken away so I think she knew what was up. I then picked her up and she clung to me and it was just like an instant bond. Since that day she has not left my side. She is my best friend. She has helped tremendously with my depression. Of course there is no real cure, but it is SO comforting just to have her by my side. She is now 8 years old and since shar pei's typically do not have as long of a life span as other dogs it scares me... I can't imagine losing her and I just want her to live as long as possible! She is my side kick and so laid back, easy going, with attitude, stubborn, and a lot like me in many ways lol I adore her!

BPD is always the hardest mental illness to diagnose, they can't technically diagnosed you with it until you're over 18 (not sure why) but anyway I'd been struggling with depression anxiety and 'relationships with people' since I was about 17 and they wouldn't look further into it except give me therapy and medication. I'm turning 21 next month and they've only just told me too that I have BPD. I'm annoyed that I've only just been told because I could have been getting help for that for so long in the sense of having that instead of other treatment that hasn't really been helping. I wish they could diagnose people at a younger age because it's not fair to have to go through this for so long and not actually get the right sort of help to sort of 'make things better'. But I suppose that's just how mental health is portrayed. I'm starting DBT in a couple months after many many assessments. Hopefully it'll be the start of a new path and for things to get better and for you too! x

I know exactly what you mean, I'm 14 and I've been self harming since I was 12 and I've been diagnosed with depression and panic disorder but I'm also apparently showing extremely strong symptoms of bpd but my local mental health providers don't want to diagnose me with it (obviously) because of my age, they've even said I very well could have it and be diagnosed with it when I'm 18 but because I'm so young they aren't doing anything with it

They wont diagnose you before youre an adult because they dont want to misdiagnose you since there are other factors that could influence you. They want to be sure.

I have just gotten into/started adult nursing at Southampton Uni, and I love the uni but I don't enjoy the course. I'm not happy on the course and like you, my anxiety has spiralled out of control just by being at uni. I want to quit but I feel like my mum doesn't understand and will feel ashamed of me. Please help :(

I also have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder around 5 years ago, and my symptoms were almost the same as yours. You are really strong that you made this video and talked about this disease and your struggles with it. Can I have a question? How do your environment as family and friends handle this whole situation? What do you tell them to understand you better? p.s. I love you

    • @themaddiebruce
      @themaddiebruce  8 лет назад

+FireElffrost Sorry to hear this. I basically just warn them not to take everything I say so literally because I can say things very impulsively and to just give me time to calm down. I think over time my friends and family have learnt to know when to give me space and when to pester me to try and get me to get out and do stuff instead of hiding away. Its all about trial and error and if you tell them what to do in certain situations they will learn xxx
