    Honestly, that video quality is more than good enough to convince me that this is going to be my next camera. I'm prepared to disregard all the other gimmicks, I can return to my black and white roots and be content for the rest of my life with this one camera.

      The video quality is very good. There are a few limitations though. There is a 4GB limit which means you only get about 7 minutes of 4K and then have to start again. There is only AF with a couple of the PLM lenses. And there is a 1.4 crop in 4k on top of the 1.5 crop so for wide angle you need a really really wide lens. Other than that it's great.

    Hi Ed, Ray here. I'm watching your videos again mate! They are so good and provide REAL information based on real life experience using the camera combined with your expertise in the subject matter built over all those years of accumulated experience you have mate. Thank you again for making them! As you know, you and your videos were fundamental on my decision to purchase this camera. As a Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm GFX user, I have no clue about Pentax(and no shame in admitting it!). I got my K3 III 'Mono' with the excellent 16-50 F2.8. It is an amazing combo, no doubt. However, I do love a prime(several to be honest) and, my lack of knowledge on the subject regarding Pentax lenses prevents me from making an informed purchase. I'm after a wide angle, a 'normal' and a short telephoto lens for the K3. I've seen so many lenses from old to new, from original Pentax to alternative third party brands. The mind boggles mate!
    So, If you were so inclined, would you like to make a video talking about the Pentax lenses, their differences and their application when it comes to the K3? Would that be something you'd be interesting in doing? If you do, It would help me a lot mate.
    Thank you so very much for your videos and your help! Cheers, Ray.

      I wish I had the necessary for all those cameras! I was set to buy a GFX 100 until my sister ripped off my inheritance after my dad passed to the tune of $200,000. I'm not destitute, far from it, but it killed the disposable part of my income...
      Hey, primes for the K3IIIM are easy. The Limited DA15, 21, 35M and 70 are all great choices. Or you could go DA 15, 21, and FA 31, 43 and 77. So lots to choose from, if you got the dosh, get the, all!

      I'm sorry you had to go through such hardship with your sister. It's a very sad fact of life that when money is involved, people some people will show their worst behaviour.
      I'm heavily in debt for the photo gear I have. Will have to pay for it over several years. On one of your videos you mentioned you don't do credit/loans. I did mate, and now I have to pay for it. We always pay! One way or another! In any case, thanks again for your kind reply. I'm loving the Pentax 'Mono'!

    I have a classic K-1 and love it, but I must admit I'm quite tempted with the K-3 Mark III Monochrome. In general I don't shoot photos intended to be black & white but some times convert to BW when the image suits it. However I enjoyed shooting BW many decades ago, and I know it changes your perspective when you know you are shooting BW. I'm kind of yearning for that again. BW images can be so powerful and you have latitude to adjust images in a way that you can't get away with on colour. Also from what I have seen from peoples images, the Monochrome is also a great night time camera, and when you crank up ISO the grain is not unattractive (typically not the case with colour DSLRs), and I quite like shooting in low light.

    Okay, pardon the humour, Ed, but your regular returns to Pentax are really becoming something like Milankovitch cycles, like oscillations in some natural system. When I'm saying this, I absolutely mean no harm, and there's zero die-hard Pentaxian gloating about it. Rather, there's something I can't help noticing: You seem to be pumped up about photography again, man. And is it just me, but I think it's also showing in your b/w work, adding to your long experience with that medium. I mean, those are probably fairly casual b/w shots, but you seem to be having a blast with them, and - surprise, surprise - they're just looking great. Have fun, Ed. Life is short, so there's no time to lose. Do I have to mention that some of your early photouniverse stuff was among the things that piqued my interest in Pentax digital, which has helped saving my love of photography? But at the end of the day, the name that's on the brand plate is just that. What really matters is the photography, and when it rocks, it rocks, right?

    • @EdwardMartinsPhotography
      @EdwardMartinsPhotography  10 месяцев назад

      The Monochrome is a unique thing. And as weird and backwards as Ricoh is, they have made something truly game changing for B&W photographers. Peak color digital camera really did happen 10 years ago, basic image quality hasn't improved or has improved very very little. And all the color sensors left A LOT to be desired when it comes to B&W. Pentax seems to be having quite a bit of success with this model, maybe other camera companies will try to get in on the action, but they probably won't. Though it would be nice if they did.
      I wish the photography actually did matter anymore, but what passes for RUclips photography masters kind of proves that wrong. The only real photographers that I've watched on RUclips all have less than 60,000 subscribers. Just like Taco Bell, "popular" is not the same thing as "good."

    Sounds like that K3iii is doing for you what the GFX system has done to me. The GFX system has me "photography excited" again and I just enjoy using it. Never thought I'd move into a big camera and lens system again, but it is just so amazing and fun to use the size doesn't matter. Really no bigger and heavier than the K1 system I was lugging around. I always have the XT5 if I want to travel small and light ;)
    That K3iii B&W appears to have great tones and depth, I can see it on RUclips and that is saying something! Have fun!

    Love the BNW photos that train video really brings the BNW k3 sensor to light. I do think Pentax is on to something. For me a SLR or rangefinder is creating an imagine instead of taking a picture. I started photography back in 2019 time frame and have enjoyed the OVF over EVF experience. Funny you post this I’ve been looking at the k3 and k1 again myself. Also that 20-40 limited lens is very good. With everyone wanting something different and shooting film. It’s only going to be a matter of time before we have a run on DSLRs again.

    Hi Ed, thanks for another great video. Homework for you mate: Could you please try to find out whether a traditional digital sensor could be converted to monochrome? Similar way to how they convert them to Infrared. I actually had one of my digital cameras professionally converted to 720nm Infrared and it works a treat! Could a similar thing be done to achieve a monochrome result?
    I am NOT surprised some people don't get it! It saddens me a bit to be honest. I too started with film, Ansel Adams and the Zone system and used to develop my own negatives and prints(Ansel's trilogy of books are my 'bible', even today). So I get it and appreciate it.
    A VERY high ISO test would be much appreciated mate.
    Keep enjoying the camera and please, keep the videos coming!

    • @EdwardMartinsPhotography
      @EdwardMartinsPhotography  9 месяцев назад +1

      As I understand it you can have a standard color filter sensor camera converted to B&W only. It's kinda goofy because all the internals of the camera are still geared for color and it's not cheap. Might as well just go for the Pentax... anyway that's what I came away with.

      I have to correct something here: k33 I mentioned in the post; I mean k33m. I bought it this July. I was looking into Leica q2m and m11m and ended up with this k33m, and then I bought a k12 for a better use of the lens.
      The reason I go with k33m other than q2m and m11m is it combines ibis, autofocus, interchangeable lens, and high iso performance at the same time. q2m is a fixed lens system, and m11m lacks ibis, which imho an essential feature that can enhance the whole system.
      The thing I want to discuss here is the k12; I was just like you after I got the k33m. I love the camera, not only the original bnw content it can generate but also the experience of using a DSLR. Then I was thinking about the k33 and k12; it is strange for me if I purchase another apsc and exactly the same camera(except the bnw) that time, so I go with k12 eventually. I call this machine a slow giant. It is so powerful.I have to give my respect to Pentax; you can clearly feel that they are willing to put everything they got into this camera. Not like some other companies these days, always cut off something they actually can provide. But it's quite slow in my workflow. I have to admit that it would be more convenient for me if I bought another k33 instead of a k12, but I saw a bit of your work; I think it's not the same case.
      BTW: almost all the FA lenses (full frame) look even better on k33m, although it's an apsc camera.

    • @EdwardMartinsPhotography
      @EdwardMartinsPhotography  10 месяцев назад +1

      The K12 is sharper than the K3M, but the K3M has less noise in the high iso ranges. And for B&W the K3M tonality is impeccable. I've shot weddings with the K12, and I'd have no issues doing so except for the weight. But the camera is fast enough for that kind of work. (If I were a full time wedding photographer like I was 20 years ago, today I'd run Fuji XH2's all day long...) It's really tough, all these cameras are so good these days. The XT5 is about as sharp as the K3M, and I've been experimenting with the tone controls and have dialed in some settings that get the B&W tonality pretty close to the K3M. (But the noise above iso 400 is ridiculous compared to the K3M.) It's all about priorities and compromises. And it's getting tougher all the time.

    I just searched the Adorama website and found several different adapters for Pentax K lenses to Fujifilm X mount. This may allow you to use the Pentax lenses like the 11-18 on the XT5. I didn't find any that would adapt X mount lenses onto the K3 Monochrome.
    Also I watched a RUclips video on Matt Paynes channel with Clyde Butcher. He finally switched from 8x10 to digital. He mentioned that a Monochrome sensor was the only way to go. He said he had a Fujifilm camera converted to Monochrome, he didn't say which model so I'll assume a GFX. When a legend like Clyde goes digital Monochrome you know something is up. An hour long interview but worth watching as it was recorded a few days ago. He said that when you photograph a blue sky with a bayer filter array that only the blue pixels in the RGB filter actually record the blue and the rest are wasted. This was his reason for the Monochrome sensor as it uses every pixel.
