As an electrician I have quite a few meters; I’ve found Fluke hard to beat especially with regard to their non-contact volt probe. I keep some cheap ones on hand, new in the packaging, from say HF to give to a friend or family member when they ask to borrow a meter. A little knowledge can get you in trouble and it’s easy to fry a meter or yourself if used incorrectly so I’m not loaning a $500 meter to someone to just get a sorry about that back. You can get some decent budget meters from Klein, Ideal, and AmpProbe that hold up quite well and don’t break the bank. When measuring most things today a True RMS meter is a must and with electrical work a clamp amp meter is a good thing to have. With clamp meters $100 should really be your starting point, and as you go up so do the features like also measuring DC amps. You should be looking at Cat3 and Cat4 levels the higher the level and volt rating typically signified a better built or better insulated/protected meter.
Chris, thanks so much for your experienced advice. I really appreciate your practical input.
Good info, thank you.
That’s a great idea of having the HF meters on hand, you very smart not to lend out your expensive meter. It gets lost or broken by the lender
Oh my God that is so funny I have a tool bin for my borrowers in my neighborhood took me a couple years of watching my stuff get destroyed to decide I don’t loan out my good stuff! Thank you that made me chuckle!
@@oneanddonetzone3673 Don't let anybody "borrow" anything.
Your vid is the nicest guide I had never saw in my entire life. I'm an amateur rider and I need this type of info in order for me to check if my motorcycle's electricals are functioning or not. Very true, there are a lot of multimeters in the market and, somehow, I need to find a suitable quality for my motorcycle's maintenance. Thank you again sir for this vid and Keep Safe.😊👍
No worries at all Louiese. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
"set your eyes on a quality unit and then wait for a reduction in price"
That is the best shopping advice for the American professional consumer technician!
I hope I never forget those words of wisdom
Yes Human Resource, I guess it is very general advice for any quality purchase. Thanks for your feedback.
"Yes, you can even die." He says it while smiling. Lol.
HaHa! A bit cynical wasn’t it. Sorry. Thanks for your comment Jacky Jack.
I wouldn't do it, I'm scared more
@@GaryDmedia I think it made the video more enjoyable, I mean a lot of people love these videos who already understand those things. But for amateur folks like me it lightens the mood and keeps our attention :D
It is VERY important and needed to be said Strongly
I bought a cheap one, but not the cheepest. I expected it to be usefull for studying the basic laws of electricity in practice (not only in books). Unfortunatelly, the reading value varies too much and does not stop at a certain point. I am a bit frustrated 🤷♂️. But thanks for clarifying me with this video!
Such a great instructional video! I need a new multi!
Glad it was helpful!
Great and helpful video, Thanks! Bought the hobby model you recommend.
Glad I could help! Dhones. It's a good start.
This video is so helpful, glad I watch it before I buy my first multimeter
I’m glad the video was helpful.
I have a clear mind set to buy multimeter after your video watching
Such great guidance thanks alot I'm just beginner
That’s great to hear, glad the video was helpful.
As an electrical engineer I use sheap meeter just to proof if there is voltage or not. If im interessted in detail I use a scope
You have lots of energy and enthusiasm. 👍👍👍
Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it.
I think we are much more interested to know is, which is much more closest to the reading , meaninh which budget multimeter are actually more accurate instead.
I'm brand new to multimeters but I want the Fluke 117 to do testing on my old car. I get the feeling that driving around an old car I'm going to get some fair use out of the thing. Thanks!
Good choice Supermova, let's hope not too often. Stay safe.
@@GaryDmedia . True! Cheers!
Very nice vid. I'm a pharmacist Jim not an electrician! Consequently this was very helpful.
Thanks Chorion, I appreciate you letting me know. I’m sure you have been very busy of late. Stay safe.
Lowes has the fluke 110 Plus for $159. That a good choice for automotive & general home/handyman type guy. Example, I was troubleshooting a 230 v spa today & my old craftsman meter died. Old, to many drops, & yeah, 20 + years old
I'm a Commercial HVAC technician. Pro quality brands are Amprobe, Fieldpiece, Brymen, UEI and TPI. In that order. Any of these are accurate and durable and safe.
Hi, great video and the only one I found to be so quick and informative.
I am looking to test PC motherboards and old retro game console boards as well as small CR button batteries like those found on Gameboy games for internal saving.
Would you recommend an expensive multimeter for more accuracy? Or should I just get something like the AstroAI you linked in the desc?
Cheers!
If you are only using the meter to test batteries and simple circuits you will only need a basic meter like the one you mentioned. If you are testing complex circuits that include transistors and resisters you would benefit from spending more money. I get the impression that this would be your first meter. My suggestion is just get a basic meter first.
@@GaryDmedia Yes it is my first meter, I just want to make sure I don't blow anything up!
Cheers I'll look into a basic meter with basic functions then!
Thanks for the quick response.
I have one fluke 87V i purchased 1995 until now working well
Awesome video thank you Gary :) !
Glad the video was helpful.
Thank you sir for good instructions, info.
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.
2:40 LOL The best moment of a great video!
Thank you very much, Sir!
Yes it is dangerous. I have been bitten a few times myself.
Great video, easy and fast forward. Bought a cheap multimeter, wanted to test cables if they were broken.. Was looking for this beep noise u get when troubleshooting cables. But there is no speaker on mine.. So confused. Dont buy cheapest one, think again for what u are going to use it for :)
Good point.
He just made me happy...don't even know why..thanks
Great to hear, thanks for your feedback.
Very informative.thank u.i have simple question ...what do u think about the quality of dekko multimeter from south korea..? They looks good but very cheap herein indonesia
Not sure about that brand. I don’t personally have access to it. Sorry Harun.
Mine blew up but now I have an idea on what to buy thanks

This fluke101 education edition is about 40 bucks and is a high quality flute with a couple really advanced features stripped out. It's a solid multimeter
Good tips thanks.
Adam Savage also recommends that one as a budget meter.
Asking someone with experience: What are your thoughts on the fluke 50 for occasional household diagnostics?
Hi Sir, plz. explain about accuracy, response time, protection, digit update speed in digital multimeters
Are there no videos that compare functionality, use case, and accuracy?
Gary, I want a Fluke, but I work with LED's. I need a meter that will light up a LED while also telling me the forward voltage drop. What do you reccomend? I understand the budget Flukes cant do this ?

I need your suggestion about buying a multimeter .
If I use to check the voltage of my bike's battery and small circuit. Do I need to buy an accurate expensive multimeter or hobby meter ( cheap )

No you don’t need to spend a lot of money. A cheaper meter will be fine.
Thank you. Very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the information
Thanks Gary. Good Video
Thanks Gavin. I appreciate it.
my fav and will never leave Fluke 117
Enjoy watching your video. I am looking for a multimeter that can be used to repair pcb boards. Capacitance and LED tests are important. My budget is around USD100 - 150. What would you recommend pls?
The links in the description of this video should give you some good options. I would recommend the better and best options. The hobby meters may do it but not as accurate. Hope that helps Sam.
Thanks 🖤
Ok thanks, now I know I need either a hobby meter or a professional meter. Do I need a license for the professional meter, I would like to be able to test those household mains to make sure I'm getting 60hz?
You do not need a license to buy a Professional meter. Anyone can purchase one, but in Australia, insurance companies won’t pay out for accidents that are caused by unqualified people doing their own electrical work.
I would not recommend anyone using a multimeter to test mains power without proper training.
Thank you. I'm going to be s electrician this is helpful
Good to hear Joe, I’m glad the video was helpful. All the best on your career as an electrician. Stay Safe!
Thanks for the info.
I appreciate the feedback Sam. 👍
@@GaryDmedia Ofc!
I am a beginner in electrical engineering and want to build tesla coils and high voltage but low current setups. What do think is necessary?
Considering you are investing in an engineering career I would recommend a quality meter. Fluke are know as one of the leaders. Don’t go cheap. You will be using it a lot throughout your career.
Thanks for this video before I buy
Really happy to hear the video was helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
Right so I'm a new electrical apprentice, and I wondering what is the point in owning a multimeter vs a fluke tester ? E.g a T6-600. I am assuming the multimeter does differing things thi
The T6-600 is a great all round tool for the electrical trade. My son, an electrical contractor has one with him all the time. A multimeter has a lot more features but not as easy to use on the job site.
At my college they had many fluke multi meters. They where all broken. We had to use the cheapo ones instead.
Oh dear, yes I know from my personal experience teaching at a training college that equipment can get abused. It works more cost efficient to replace with cheaper gear more often.
Very information gave us
I just subscribed because of your activity like you replied to the comments, can you tell ,,, how to use multimetr
Good to hear Oba. I appreciate your comments.
I need one to read resistance on tone capacitors with low values like 0.002 my cheap ones work great for my other needs around the house and car.
Fluke 289
Is the multimeter by Klein Tools still made in the United States?
Klein tools have a whole range of multimeters and they admit that some new items are sourced from overseas. If a particular product of theirs products say ‘Made in the USA,’ they are, in fact, made in the USA. It is illegal to mislabel a product's “Country of Origin”. My suggestion would be to check each item for that label. Hope that helps. More info here: www.kleintools.com/content/american-manufacturing
I am a heavy duty diesel technician and need a better multimeter. I use a 60 dollar Amazon one and it’s been okay but I do ALOT of electrical checking
Thank you very much.
Great the video was helpful.
I am an Electrition in the UK, the cheep yellow multimeter you referred to as a hobbyist meter is fine for home use on main supply it will measure up to 750 V AC demestic instalations in the UK is 230 V AC Australia is 240 V AC so that meter will be fine, I have been using that same meter for 22 years and I have never had a shock or any problems with it, but I do agree with you on durability don't expect it last as long as mine has mine has been repaired twice since I first got it. Fluke are over priced and over rated. I now use uni-t they are fairly new to the market nice and cheap but high quality.
Thanks Sean, I appreciate your input. Thanks.
uni-t is a chines product it s cheap but not like Flucke never
Electricity can kill.
As a member of the public I'm not informed of annual deaths due to electrical causes or failed equipment used in the maintenance of electrical goods.
This type of info is important to me; what I can say with certainty is that cheap Chinese crap is flooding the market, and it comes with risks, e.g. copper wiring which is aluminum plated with copper, or poor rubber/ plastic quality (ie insulation), or the fraudulent use of CE on Chinese goods which one reasonably assumes to be an indication of European compliance but the same 2 letters, with the same font, is "conveniently" claimed to mean 'China Export'.
Given the lifespan of a meter, the premium added to a known brand is worth the cost and risk.
Good advice M Ark. Thanks for adding your comment. I really appreciate it.

Thank you Sir,
No problem at all. Happy to be of help.
Thanks for the informative video.
No worries Soran, thanks for letting me know.
What is continuity used for?
Nippes, This is used to check if there is a continuous wire. Like the resistance function gives you a visual indication of no or low resistance. Continuity gives you an audible indication the wire is not broken. Hope that helps. The Free Multimeter Basics Course explains this.
i am gonna wotk at spaceX..can i use $3 digital Multimeter ??
Rudy, you sure can if it meets the requirements of the task your doing. You will only need an expensive meter if you require more accuracy.
@@GaryDmedia no sir i am just kidding... sure we need accuracy like a fluke for prefesional and safety equipment ..here i am only use $15 cheap chinese for small project like arduino etc with low voltage.. but thanks for answer 😊

Which multimeter should I buy if fixing computers?
Leotha, If you are repairing computers for a business. It would be worth your while to buy a good quality meter. There are a lot of cheaper meters. If it was me I would buy a Fluke brand. If they are too expensive for you there are some AstroAI meters that have better leads. Hope that helps.

Thank you for not being a generic AI voice to sell stuff...
Cool, I hope I chose the right multimeter, the one to rule them all (I just bought one) to repair every gadgets and electrical things that's in a house (Wacom tablets, desktop PCs, laptops, retro videogames consoles, current videogame consoles, outlets, PC and Mac power supplies, motherboard, other boards, the fuse box and mains in the fuse box).

Looking good automotive multimeter for trucks and car uni t
I've been fixing electronics for 5 years with 10$ multimeter
Yeah but can it read a 0.002 tone capacitor? None of my cheap ones will read that low of a resistance and I'm looking to buy one right now.
AC or DC?
On my way to buy a $3 one.
Meanwhile I can’t find a good one. Either the prongs are unreliable or they aren’t sensitive enough.
Well i would bet that he doesn't need 0.002 of capacitance. Most people don't need that to begin with

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for your support.
This guy is 100% right I'm a first year apprentice electrician and I'm here to tell you Those cheap meters that you see on wish and banggood. Or garbage low volt only like maybe your car if you're lucky. Are they accurate to within a degree they are accurate. If you're not paying 50 to $100 for a meter don't bother. You're just buying garbage at this point. And look at the name brand and God forbid if you get it from China question It absolutely!!!!!!! And guys like this online who are out there to help you or pretty awesome take advantage of that. Cuz I go to school and I pay a tuition in college and work during the day as an apprentice and it ain't cheap. So anyone giving you advice like this online you might want to follow a little bit but do your background definitely on who's telling you what because not all the people on RUclips are I call it the university of RUclips I've got The correct information.
I am a beginner which multimeter is best for me
Tibo, try the ones I have linked in the description. I have selected an economical meter for you to have a look at.
I’m beginning to think testing household current with the $6 harbor freight multimeter wasn’t so smart…

I used so many tyeps multimeters but after few months all given wrong reading,,,,
It's kind of scary that you can die from using a hobbyist meter. If you buy one for a simple car electronics diagnosis, you will likely have it sit around the house for years. At any point someone could pick it up and use it to test house electronics, unaware of the danger.
I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure many people do test mains power with cheap meters. They are rated to carry out the task but the test probes that are supplied with cheap meters are not very durable.

I'm electrician, I want to know the metre I will use that will be good for me
99.99% of the people commenting here don't need 500-1000 USD of "Super accuracy".
People have to calm down and stop buying things just because you can.
Buy a Fluke. You'll never need another one.

Why cant they just make a meter that does it all? Tired of switching between meters all the damn time.. and explaining which meters are for what is just getting annoying.. fluke =hv and amp. Klein for auto range. And chinesium weng fung for ohm and capacitance... lol..
Totally Z Ack. Can be frustrating. Sadly meters have to be specialised fir the task they are designed for. If I find a meter that does everything I will let you know. It could make us very rich. HaHa!
"if your looking for a quality meter, buy a brand like Fluke"
.....at this very moment, I stopped watching this Fluke ADVERTISEMENT.
I'm guessing you only buy SNAP ON sockets for your Snap on ratchets.
I'm not knocking Fluke one tiny bit.
Fluke/Snap on/Mac....... Yeah, I get it.
People watching are expecting a realistic meter.
A basic, a better, and a relative equal to the high end meter brands. Why spend $600 for pride and bragging rights when go $175 to $275 you could buy something as accurate.
.0000V difference is close enough for my OCD
Why jump straight from El cheapo to Fluke as an example?
