If I couldn't grow anything else, I will always grow herbs! They make food and drinks come alive, and you can make your own dried herbs so easily, by hanging them upside down in your home, on your porch, in your garage, greenhouse, or even in your car or truck 😅! My favorite way to use basil's is steeped as teas 😋!

Hi Patty - they make foods come alive - I love that! Herbs are a win-win for sure - and homegrown herbs taste and smell out of this world. I never thought of hanging them in my truck as an air freshener - great idea! Snipping some more rosemary today just for that!

@@CaliKim29 Of course you can come for lunch! But since you're over 2000 miles away, here's the recipe so you can you make it with tarragon that you grow! I use purchased rotisserie chicken which I shred or poach some chicken breasts in chicken broth for the salad and serve it on some lettuce. Enjoy!
Tarragon Chicken Salad with Grapes and Pecans---Makes 4 cups
      1/2 cup mayonnaise
      1/2 cup sour cream
      1 TBSP lemon juice
      1 TBSP Dijon mustard
      1 tsp kosher salt
3 cups chopped or shredded cooked chicken
      2 stalks of celery, diced
      1 cup toasted pecans, chopped
      1 cup red grapes, quartered
      1/4 cup fresh tarragon, chopped
      1. For dressing: Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, mustard, and salt in medium bowl and whisk until well combined.
      2. In a separate bowl, toss together chicken, celery, pecans, grapes, and tarragon. Add mayonnaise mixture and mix gently. Serve on lettuce leaves.

Up here in Alberta Canada ,I grow a pile of dill and dry it before the heat of summer. Same for cilantro and basil. It’s a longgg dark winter in these parts so dried herbs are a big deal if one doesn’t want to fork out big bucks for fresh winter herbs at the grocery store.

I have a huge rosemary bush! Just got into chives with seeds. My favorite basil variety is Greek Columnar Basil. It lasts well into winter. I buy the plants from a nursery in Santa Cruz but I can never find seeds for it. I'm one of the minority that finds cilantro tastes like disinfectant.

All fabulous choices. Rosemary: I am feeling so accomplished - I FINALLY got it to germinate this year - and successfully progragated a few cuttings. Oh and basil thrives in shade too. The cooler soil really slows down the blooms but not the overall growth. If you haven't tried it, you really should.

My Basil that is growing in a pot in my kitchen window is starting to set flower. Is it due to stress or just does that after a few months? Can I just cut those tips off and continue growing it? Or will that change the flavour? Thank you🌹

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Месяц назад

When basil starts to set flowers, it is a natural part of its life cycle, typically occurring after a few months of growth. However, it can also be a response to stress, such as insufficient light, water, or nutrients.
While flowering itself doesn’t necessarily change the flavor of the leaves, older basil plants tend to produce leaves that are less tender and can develop a slightly bitter taste. Regularly removing flowers can help maintain the quality of the leaves.
You know your plants best...I hope this helps in your next step ? Try taking some into water and the others cut the tips...and see what results you get and like better - that's usually how I handle these type of dilemmas. Keep us all posted, Michele! CK
