If I couldn't grow anything else, I will always grow herbs! They make food and drinks come alive, and you can make your own dried herbs so easily, by hanging them upside down in your home, on your porch, in your garage, greenhouse, or even in your car or truck 😅! My favorite way to use basil's is steeped as teas 😋!
Hi Patty - they make foods come alive - I love that! Herbs are a win-win for sure - and homegrown herbs taste and smell out of this world. I never thought of hanging them in my truck as an air freshener - great idea! Snipping some more rosemary today just for that!
Holy Basil tea is the quintessential summer drink. It smells amazing and healthy.
I am going to leave this comment alone. It's perfect.... : )
So many wonderful ones💚 I like Lemon thyme. Bought a transplant and it’s been growing for years. Good on veggies and fish.
Wonderful-that DOES sound good! Espesh' the fish! Hope all is well! CK
Does anyone else grow tarragon? I love a chicken salad made with mayo and chopped tarragon!
Julie, your salad sounds amazing - can I come for lunch? I definitely need to grow some!
I'm trying it in my garden for the first time this year!
I grow tarragon in my vegepod and it overwinters here in South Australia
@@CaliKim29 Of course you can come for lunch! But since you're over 2000 miles away, here's the recipe so you can you make it with tarragon that you grow! I use purchased rotisserie chicken which I shred or poach some chicken breasts in chicken broth for the salad and serve it on some lettuce. Enjoy!
Tarragon Chicken Salad with Grapes and Pecans---Makes 4 cups
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1 TBSP lemon juice
1 TBSP Dijon mustard
1 tsp kosher salt
3 cups chopped or shredded cooked chicken
2 stalks of celery, diced
1 cup toasted pecans, chopped
1 cup red grapes, quartered
1/4 cup fresh tarragon, chopped
1. For dressing: Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, mustard, and salt in medium bowl and whisk until well combined.
2. In a separate bowl, toss together chicken, celery, pecans, grapes, and tarragon. Add mayonnaise mixture and mix gently. Serve on lettuce leaves.
I LOVE Tarragon! I am going to attempt to grow them, wish me luck!!!
Cilantro and rosemary is my nemesis. No matter how many seeds I sow, none of them wants to sprout at all. So, yea, I bought a couple of rosemary starts and plan to keep them going.
No, I get it deboz . If it's any help...you are not alone. Keep trying to solve the mystery of cilantro and rosemary. It'll connect....CK
I'm so excited, I just got rid of a huge chunk of grass in my front yard and have converted it to a herb and cut flower garden. I just finished planting it all out and can't wait for it to start growing!
That IS exciting!!!! I am SO happy for you. I get it. This is huge!!! CaliKim
I love the mints and lemon balm all the time, too.
OHhh, yes, those two sound nice!!!! Mint - is definitely one of my favorites...CK
VERY GOOD TEACHING 👍 THANKS #NOT A DAY WITHOUT JESUS 🙏
You are very welcome- CK
Your garden is so beautiful right now! ♥ Basil and rosemary are my favorite herbs, and it's so wonderful having them growing in pots on the patio!
Thank you so much!!! Yes, they are wonderful herbs! Thanks for watching and commenting!! CK
Which of these herbs is your favorite? Thanks for gardening with us! -CaliKim & CameraGuy 🌎EARTH DAY SALE: 50% off all CaliKim Seed Collections with code “HAPPYEARTHDAY” at calikimgardenandhome.com. Expires 4/22/24.
Up here in Alberta Canada ,I grow a pile of dill and dry it before the heat of summer. Same for cilantro and basil. It’s a longgg dark winter in these parts so dried herbs are a big deal if one doesn’t want to fork out big bucks for fresh winter herbs at the grocery store.
EXACTLY. I get it. You get it! Way to go, Derek, great job. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing, if you have not already - Kim
Kim I know what you mean Herbs are so expensive In the grocery store I always start mine from seed to
Excellent, Jackie. Way to go - CK
I have a huge rosemary bush! Just got into chives with seeds. My favorite basil variety is Greek Columnar Basil. It lasts well into winter. I buy the plants from a nursery in Santa Cruz but I can never find seeds for it. I'm one of the minority that finds cilantro tastes like disinfectant.
Very nice! Would love to see a photo of your garden! You know where to send it! And yes, you are the minority of the tastes like a disinfectant!! Too funny! CK
I cook my own dog food and add rosemary and other herbs into their food for extra flavour and nutrition. I’m going to try growing dill and coriander in the shade next summer here in South Australia because it just bolts in our hot summers
P.S great tips here Kim
Wow. That's awesome....goin' homegrown are ya'?? I LOVE IT!!! Keep on doing what you are doing Luna. CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 Luna is my Shiztu puppy 😊
Great video I'm saving this one!
Please do! That is awesome to hear - can you share one particular part that resonated with you? I would love to hear that!! Thank you for watching! And hopefully subscribing if you have not already! *I can't always, tell! CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 details about each herb excellent!
If you haven’t tried Caribe Cilantro give it a try. I’m in Texas and it’s still not bolted but my traditional cilantro has.
Ohhh, I've not had that yet. Thanks for the heads up-will do...CK
Zone 8b nc coast here. Just this morning we direct sowed sweet and opal basil in a ring pattern in two smart pots (bird netting on top). If we're worth our salt we should have a neat photo to attach to pot review. Very much enjoying the smart pots. Have a wonderful spring both of yah!
Good stuff! GREAT comment, too! You all worth your salt...your good! Made my day anyways! The for subscribing, watching and commenting! CaliKim
Your garden is just gorgeous! I grow most of those herbs, and like you I love chives in my eggs! Of course its also great in almost any potato dish too. Butterfly caterpillars always eat up my dill. Trying to find a way to keep some for myself!😂
Thanks so much! We love to film in the early morning soft light! As far as caterpillars.....I will pick off the green horn worms by hand! The battle is real, right??? Always good to read your comments, Beth. Kim
@CaliKim29 With dill, it's the caterpillars of one of the Swallowtail butterflies. I'm loathe to kill butterflies, so I need to figure out something else. 😔
I love basil to make pesto!
Yes! That sounds phenomenal! Basil is one of my faves, too. That's for sure! Thanks for watching/commenting. CK
All fabulous choices. Rosemary: I am feeling so accomplished - I FINALLY got it to germinate this year - and successfully progragated a few cuttings. Oh and basil thrives in shade too. The cooler soil really slows down the blooms but not the overall growth. If you haven't tried it, you really should.
Thank you, Ceecee! Proud of you - great job on the germination!! I'll def. keep it in mind!!! Kim
My cilantro is a little bigger now
Hi Keith, that's GREAT to hear! Keep doing what you are doing! CK
My Basil that is growing in a pot in my kitchen window is starting to set flower. Is it due to stress or just does that after a few months? Can I just cut those tips off and continue growing it? Or will that change the flavour? Thank you🌹
When basil starts to set flowers, it is a natural part of its life cycle, typically occurring after a few months of growth. However, it can also be a response to stress, such as insufficient light, water, or nutrients.
While flowering itself doesn’t necessarily change the flavor of the leaves, older basil plants tend to produce leaves that are less tender and can develop a slightly bitter taste. Regularly removing flowers can help maintain the quality of the leaves.
You know your plants best...I hope this helps in your next step ? Try taking some into water and the others cut the tips...and see what results you get and like better - that's usually how I handle these type of dilemmas. Keep us all posted, Michele! CK
