  • Nine students and two teachers were on a school bus that rolled off the road Monday morning near Didsbury, Alta.
Didsbury RCMP said an officer came across the rollover on Highway 2A at Township Road 320 at around 10:20 a.m.
EMS responded to the crash shortly before 10:30 a.m. Police say there were nine students, two teachers, and the driver on the bus at the time of the collision.
Six people were transported to various hospitals via ground ambulance for a range of injuries, some considered serious, but not life-threatening.
Rocky View Schools confirmed to Global News the nine students and two staff members are from George McDougall High School in Airdrie, Alta. They were en route to a field trip when the accident happened.
    Cami Kepke has more.

It's odd, my wife and I just had a conversation 2 days ago about how archaic school buses are. All the advancements in the world and we still put our kids in these death traps. Not even a seat belt upgrade. Absolutely blows my mind.

I used to say the same thing, the problem is that it’s a double edged sword. Yes, seatbelts save lives. But what kind of situation arises when a driver or God forbid another student has to unbuckle seatbelts for people who can’t, which potentially delaying evacuation? It’s a tough call, really there isn’t a single answer.

@@jsu1982yeah, that’s why nobody uses seatbelts or child seats in other road vehicles. The seatbelts could impede getting kids out when those vehicles are involved in accidents, I guess… 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's to save money. Seat belts add an extra 7k to the price of the bus, and the safety tests haven't been updated since the 80s. A system could also be employed to unbucle with sensors after the crash is finished, the same way on certain air bags go off in a car accident, fuel shut-offs ect.

I drove school bus for over 10 years, they are not safe without seat belts, and they could also have fire suppression equipment in case of a fire.... but the way, there are over 25 state in the USA that have sestbelts installed in buses, you don't hear about any problems. It's like having 8 children in a minivan, does it make it less safe? During a rollover in a bus, children are thrown everywhere, including out the windows

STOP BLAMING THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS....for the poor state of rural highways! This happened to my kid in Cabri Saskatchewan on the way to school a few years ago. The road was not maintained properly by highways dept. and was thick black ice. The FALSE blame was put on the bus driver, but in fact she saved our kids! Thank you Nancy, you are a hero!

STOP blaming the weather and other people. If a school bus crashes its always the bus drivers fault. Bus drivers can refuse to drive in bad weather if THEY feel it's unsafe. If THEY make the decision to drive when it's UNSAFE THEN ITS THERE FAULT.

Calgary has the worst drivers I’ve ever experienced. If you don’t agree, you are one of them. In BC we drive according to the weather, yes roads get icy, have the right tires and DRIVE ACCORDING to the weather. That means doing 60 KMH in the slow lane instead of being a twit. So many single car accidents in Calgary, flying off the road driving like it’s summer. Edmonton has good drivers, I don’t know what it is about Cowtown, Deerfoot drivers going slow in the fast lane at the best of time, no regards of signal to merge, seriously the worst drivers.

@phillyg7661 I agree and I live in Calgary. It's absolutely amazing what happens when the first snow falls in October or November. The idiots are everywhere here and they drive like they have never seen snow before. Multiple car pileups every year, it's just unbelievable.

My little sister was the one ejected from this bus, found unconscious beside the bus. Gladly she’s okay now! But so many people failed these kids this day. Road conditions were in no way reasonable for a field trip, the school, the school district and the bus company should have canceled this trip. Children’s safety should come first.

I've had repeated conversations over the last 24 hours with a lot of folks that don't understand why school busses don't have seat belts, which is I understandable, and I would love to provide some insight.
I was a school bus driver for 4 years and drove for 10 different schools ranging from kindergarten to high school. The reason is very simple - it slows down evacuations. A standard size school bus can hold about 72 children and if they're all wearing seat belts, and can't get out in time for the sake that they're kids and need help or that the seat belt gets stuck, well..
It's a risk analysis and school bus accidents are usually minor and children are statistically safer taking a school bus to school than being driven by the parents in a regular vehicle (nothing to do with ability but everything to do with school bus vs vehicle size).
A few years ago a school bus driver was completing his PM route and his bus suddenly caught fire in the engine bay. He immediately pulled over and evacuated everyone at the rear in less than a minute. The entire bus caught fire a few minutes later in an unbelievable sight. No one was harmed and I had the privilege of walking through the charred remnants of that bus a few months later. I could not imagine being stuck on that bus unable to remove a seat belt in time for a child.

These drivers quite often are not professional and are underqualified to be driving our kids around. Weather may be a factor but one that a good driver will compensate for easily.

First off....... 4 high will cause drag from your front diff and restrict you from turning properly by not allowing an inside wheel to slow down and the outside to speed up when turning. Second, awd is completely different from 4wd. Awd is decent for winter car control 4wd IS NOT. Glad you have winters but maybe do some research on running a truck in 4wd or ask a mechanic on the pros and cons.😊

It was unheard of because the internet wasn't invented yet. The world is actually far safer than it was 30 years ago; we just see so much more of the bad stuff now than we used to that it seems like it's getting worse.
