- Nine students and two teachers were on a school bus that rolled off the road Monday morning near Didsbury, Alta.
Didsbury RCMP said an officer came across the rollover on Highway 2A at Township Road 320 at around 10:20 a.m.
EMS responded to the crash shortly before 10:30 a.m. Police say there were nine students, two teachers, and the driver on the bus at the time of the collision.
Six people were transported to various hospitals via ground ambulance for a range of injuries, some considered serious, but not life-threatening.
Rocky View Schools confirmed to Global News the nine students and two staff members are from George McDougall High School in Airdrie, Alta. They were en route to a field trip when the accident happened.

Wishing speedy recovery to everyone. Glad to hear no deaths happened. Lots of prayes and love for all children, teachers, driver and families.
It's odd, my wife and I just had a conversation 2 days ago about how archaic school buses are. All the advancements in the world and we still put our kids in these death traps. Not even a seat belt upgrade. Absolutely blows my mind.
I used to say the same thing, the problem is that it’s a double edged sword. Yes, seatbelts save lives. But what kind of situation arises when a driver or God forbid another student has to unbuckle seatbelts for people who can’t, which potentially delaying evacuation? It’s a tough call, really there isn’t a single answer.
@@jsu1982yeah, that’s why nobody uses seatbelts or child seats in other road vehicles. The seatbelts could impede getting kids out when those vehicles are involved in accidents, I guess… 🤷🏻♂️
It's to save money. Seat belts add an extra 7k to the price of the bus, and the safety tests haven't been updated since the 80s. A system could also be employed to unbucle with sensors after the crash is finished, the same way on certain air bags go off in a car accident, fuel shut-offs ect.

When will they put seat belts in school buses ? When ?! All other vehicles require seat belts !!
I worked on those bus's for decades, there a death trap. No seat belts, no air bags, no padding, all medal and glass surrounding the kids, minimal training for drivers.
Rolling over in a bus.. Help me that would be scary
Yes ..was scary...my son was one of worst injured and older kids he sprang into action got little ones out...meanwhile they blamed our beautiful busdriver NANCY...WAS A LIE, SHE SAVED THISE KIDS!
The first snowfall of the season and the driver should’ve been more careful. 🤦🏻♂️
I drove school bus for over 10 years, they are not safe without seat belts, and they could also have fire suppression equipment in case of a fire.... but the way, there are over 25 state in the USA that have sestbelts installed in buses, you don't hear about any problems. It's like having 8 children in a minivan, does it make it less safe? During a rollover in a bus, children are thrown everywhere, including out the windows
STOP BLAMING THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS....for the poor state of rural highways! This happened to my kid in Cabri Saskatchewan on the way to school a few years ago. The road was not maintained properly by highways dept. and was thick black ice. The FALSE blame was put on the bus driver, but in fact she saved our kids! Thank you Nancy, you are a hero!
STOP blaming the weather and other people. If a school bus crashes its always the bus drivers fault. Bus drivers can refuse to drive in bad weather if THEY feel it's unsafe. If THEY make the decision to drive when it's UNSAFE THEN ITS THERE FAULT.
Calgary has the worst drivers I’ve ever experienced. If you don’t agree, you are one of them. In BC we drive according to the weather, yes roads get icy, have the right tires and DRIVE ACCORDING to the weather. That means doing 60 KMH in the slow lane instead of being a twit. So many single car accidents in Calgary, flying off the road driving like it’s summer. Edmonton has good drivers, I don’t know what it is about Cowtown, Deerfoot drivers going slow in the fast lane at the best of time, no regards of signal to merge, seriously the worst drivers.
@phillyg7661 I agree and I live in Calgary. It's absolutely amazing what happens when the first snow falls in October or November. The idiots are everywhere here and they drive like they have never seen snow before. Multiple car pileups every year, it's just unbelievable.
My little sister was the one ejected from this bus, found unconscious beside the bus. Gladly she’s okay now! But so many people failed these kids this day. Road conditions were in no way reasonable for a field trip, the school, the school district and the bus company should have canceled this trip. Children’s safety should come first.
Prayers to everyone involved. Drive safe this winter Canada, from Ontario.
Poor kids. Speed recovery!
@yendal4203 ?
Horrible. Wasn't there also another bus incident earlier this year?
yeah, with a new york high school band
Hope all are safe
Prayers for everyone. Wishing a quick recovery.
I've had repeated conversations over the last 24 hours with a lot of folks that don't understand why school busses don't have seat belts, which is I understandable, and I would love to provide some insight.
I was a school bus driver for 4 years and drove for 10 different schools ranging from kindergarten to high school. The reason is very simple - it slows down evacuations. A standard size school bus can hold about 72 children and if they're all wearing seat belts, and can't get out in time for the sake that they're kids and need help or that the seat belt gets stuck, well..
It's a risk analysis and school bus accidents are usually minor and children are statistically safer taking a school bus to school than being driven by the parents in a regular vehicle (nothing to do with ability but everything to do with school bus vs vehicle size).
A few years ago a school bus driver was completing his PM route and his bus suddenly caught fire in the engine bay. He immediately pulled over and evacuated everyone at the rear in less than a minute. The entire bus caught fire a few minutes later in an unbelievable sight. No one was harmed and I had the privilege of walking through the charred remnants of that bus a few months later. I could not imagine being stuck on that bus unable to remove a seat belt in time for a child.
She contradicts herself in this, she says they rolled leaving them seriously injured then instantly after she says they were transported to hospital for non serious injuries lol
Non life threatening as she said is 100% different than serious injuries.
Welcome to news reporters who do not vet their own stories very often.
Driver going too fast guaranteed.
As a professional 1a driver I see it everyday, I get passed on double solids, blind hills, blind corners, exit ramps, you name it, I see it.. every damn day.
The world needs to slow down. It'll be OK if you get where you're going 5 minutes later.
No kidding. As soon as I slowed down my driving and started taking my time, I started seeing how many other idiots were on the road. Thank God I'm not one of them anymore.
As far as it's understood by the parents they were not speeding but we are still waiting for the police accident report. My daughter was one of the injured students. Worst injuries I have heard of are concussion sprains a broken nose and severe bruising everywhere.
@heatherball6640 speeding doesn't always mean you're going too fast for posted limit. It can mean you're going to fast for the road conditions.
If they can't safely maintain a vehicle under control in all conditions, they shouldn't be driving children around.
Good thing kids dont need seat belts on a bus
Oh no . Hope everyone will be ok so sad :(
Slow down people. Leave 10 minutes early. Winter is here and ice doesn't care how much tread is on your tires
I have seen a lot of bus drivers not following rules of the road and even going the wrong way around a roundabout, speeding, and failing to stop at stop signs in Whitecourt. These drivers quite often are not professional and are underqualified to be driving our kids around. Weather may be a factor but one that a good driver will compensate for easily.
100% would not trust them to drive me or my kids on a daily.
The grass is still showing, the snow isn't that bad!
@@tanyawieczorek6603 Black ice ! Looks wet, quick freeze, first snow of the season. People need to learn to slow down and be aware of quick changing conditions. Probably no salters on the roads yet either. Happens every year ! Nothing new.
Great work everyone, we really do all depend on each person doing their job in times of crisis. Thank you Cami
Wait, It’s already snowing in Alberta?? Ahh Man, that’s messed up 😢🤷🏽♀️
Its cold up here. Not igloo cold, but cold
Yes, us in Alberta are getting snow. Welcome winter weather. 🥶 ❄️
Yeah, this is pretty much right on schedule for our first snowfall.
Sometimes starts in early September.
Alberta can have a snowstorm in any month, including June, July and August....😂😂😂
Omg 😢hope they are okay, I'll send my prayers to them and hope they recover soon 🙏
Damn winter
Stop blaming weather and roads, it's never their fault, get real!
Exactly! There's still grass visible, the snow isn't that bad!
@@tanyawieczorek6603 snow isnt the problem, black ice is. i can agree however that there is likely some driver error involved in the accident
Poor Cami got the short end of the stick today! Having to stand out in that bitter cold that we aren't yet used to this winter. She must be freezing!
Hope all are okay yes slippery roads and crazy with tires that are all season I beleive their should be away to fix things
Am glad no deaths god bless and speedy recovery what an experience
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ hope everyone is okay!!!
im fine
They should have cancelled that trip due to the bad weather, in addition, alberta is not doing a great job in cleaning all the roads during snow fall and storm. The are just watching this kind of accidents and slow in clearing the roads.
Why aren't there seat belts in school buses ? Does anyone know why ?
They need to re-examine all schools bus drivers. They don’t follow rules on speed limit and in front of play grounds.
Also, using their cell phones while driving or having AirPods talking to people all distracting drivers
They keep your stuff as well. If anything is left on these buses you will never see it again.
It is time for seat belts in school buses. How many children need to get hurt before the school boards wake up!
What were the police doing their, don't they have more important things to deal with , like arresting Pators?
I was just out on the roads, they are getting worse and I saw so many cars in the ditches and stuck sometimes just feet from the road. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and STAY HOME.
Speed not suitable for road conditions
I don’t know why it hurts to declare just 1 snow day. Specially the first one and when it snows overnight. The city does not even get time to clean the roads before school opens. Ontario always does that. Why not Calgary? What are they waiting for? A big accident??
Why are you bringing up Calgary? This crash happened near the town of Didsbury, which is just over an hour north of Calgary
Snowday ? Here in northern Ontario we have them all the time seems like this school trip should have been cancelled.
Are you hazing this reporter?
Why isn't she properly covered?
Why is there nothing off screen to keep the snow from hitting her in the face?
Are you a professional news company or what?
But yet no seatbelts on school buses. there’s how much the government cares.
seatbelts
Maybe they should put winter tires on them buses
الحمدلله انهم احياء .. أسأل الله لهم الشفاء العاجل .. أما اطفال غزة فيموتون تحت القصف كل يوم 😢
Yeah road crews no where in sight in Cochrane
I was outside of spruce grove today and I’m in a ram Laramie with brand new 1200 rubbers ,,, for winter,, and I was in 4 high which helps maintain best all wheel drive ,,, and I had my 6 year old on deck in a pick up and we were driving to the conditions of the road and this school
Bus passed us the 350 lb female Karen passes me and looks into my truck with a nasty looking face and I thought wow ,, there is like 20 kids or so with their little lives in her hands and this is how she is driving and then acting as a driver to these children ,,, wow I was thinking in my head lady slow down what are you doing ,, this is what causes accidents tragic ones then I see this on the news ,,, listen slow down and lose the angry crap drive to conditions take the time don’t act like that with kids on deck
First off....... 4 high will cause drag from your front diff and restrict you from turning properly by not allowing an inside wheel to slow down and the outside to speed up when turning. Second, awd is completely different from 4wd. Awd is decent for winter car control 4wd IS NOT. Glad you have winters but maybe do some research on running a truck in 4wd or ask a mechanic on the pros and cons.😊
4 wheel drive rather sorry was upset when I wrote post as this driver was extremely wreckless
@@morgangentle3287 all good, just remember if you do end up in a skid in 4 high, you may not be able to counter steer. Sorry that you had to see one of the bad bus drivers out there. I been to a emergency callout where the bus driver pulled a electrical transformer down on top of her bus due to not knowing her dimensions. They definately need more training and better vetting. They get paid very little as well and most bus companies dont upkeep busses well. Cheers from your neck of the woods. I was in Spruce today too lol.
I’m 39 been driving since ten hold a class one license never had an accident cross my fingers. I drive to conditions have held ODA for years and when I saw this I was in disbelief,,, I know how to handle trucks I run mud bogs demolition derby rally car racing etc I drive through mountains putting in trans mountain pipe line in the access roads being towed up mountain sides by D 8s and then lowered down the blasted mountain sides I know how to run a light duty pick up
I had a bus driver who was exactly the same way. Grumpy attitude and went too fast in winter.
Interestingly, the one and only time my bus got in an accident, it was not with her behind the wheel.
No seatbelts, only non life threatening injuries in a freaking ROLLING bus. Yet once again we will have people claiming that seatbelts are "needed" on busses... oh wait, they're already in the comments here.
do they use winter tires? Quebec does
Being from BC, we drive according to the weather. Calgary has the worst drivers, if you don’t agree, you are one of them.
Vaxxident?
is the bus ok
Makes you wonder how fast the bus driver was going, in that snow.
What snow? The entire half inch lol
Yes but the road looked icy too.@@tanyawieczorek6603
If you live in Calgary, you would know that it got 20cm of snow that day.@@tanyawieczorek6603
that's an ill-equipped school bus with no snow tire capability , those tires are summer tires with no tread but for dry - wet asphalt .
30 years old school buses....
Get better ❤️ Canadians
School Buses need seat belts.
Nuff said.
After this i really do not want to go on my feald trip
Ban school buses. Law abiding license holders should not be allowed to operate these.
Everyone get your snows on folks
Mis oraciones para los niños Dios los bendiga ❤️😇🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌
This is canada..god not real
There are more accidents across the country. 2023 was a death trap. Now what exactly is the cause? Others might actually mention something else. Can we discuss this? Who's mind was overtaken? As a person who has never been in more than one accident in a year, has had people crash into it. Now what are the odds of that? That something more dangerous is happening? That NOBODY wants to discuss because people are gaslighting them?
Field trip should have been cancelled. bad call on the school board ..hope all are ok.
the roads should have been sanded as soon as the snow started we all know that the roads would have been very slippery why weren't they sanding
ah no seat belts people get injured da da as the world turns da da wake up
Driving to fast for road conditions

Why would they support the bus driver?! He's the one who caused the accident in the first place!!🙄🤦♀️
Who said it was a man ?
We're you in the bus...at the scene!?
GEE I WONDER
😢
😢😢😢
I’m sure they’ll find out speed was the cause this.. they need to slow down.. you get there when you get there ! Keep the fuel tank full for added weight for traction .
Children... "Otto, we don't think this is a self driving bus! Wake up, Otto!!"
Otto got blotto on that good and legal, Canada big-bud 😆
🙏🏿
Lets see, slippery, windy snowy road conditions, lets speed up so we can get out of this weather.
Darn that global warming!
Shut down schools, ban busses, force another needle. Thx Dr t.
if these people cannot drive in alberta, then i guess they cannot drive in europe or in asia... these people need to take more hours in learning how to drive.... they are carrying kids...... gosh.
This type of thing was unheard of when I grew up.
It was unheard of because the internet wasn't invented yet. The world is actually far safer than it was 30 years ago; we just see so much more of the bad stuff now than we used to that it seems like it's getting worse.
@@JakobHill Safer than it was 30 years ago.... not even close.
Because roads were better maintained and there were schools everywhere kids did not need to be bussed an hour!
@@JakobHill The fist school shooting actually happened in the late 90's in Colorado and it was shocking news back then!
Injuries will not stop until they put seashells on for everyone. I drove school bus for over 10 years, they are not a safe vehicle
Why was this bus allowed to go on a field trip??????
it's only snow, not a hurricane. the driver's incompetent. driver was probably seat belted in with minor or no injuries but the kids flying around in the back
