That is a proper old man's lathe. You can tell it's authentic by the electric tape holding the wiring together. One of my favorite things to do during the summer is look for stuff like that at estate auctions. I've already informed my children that when I die they're going to need an excavator to clean up all of my old man mess.

Took a CAD class in highschool and a local fab shop came and recruited a few of us that had cars to run a plasma table. We made throwing stars the first night we were left alone. The owner was scolding us for not getting enough done halfway through the shift but completely failed to notice the 7 to 10 throwing stars stuck in the wall behind him.
It honestly just sounds like this lady is interested in what you're doing and the message sounded pretty innocuous and actually genuinely nice. That's a flat belt drive lathe I've been looking for one that isn't 2k for years because I need an antique lathe so it can be ran off a line shaft for horse drawn equipment restoration shop plus I want steam engines so I need it to fix/build those too

I as well have many jars of screws from my grandpa and can confirm I will never use them all. My hope is they just get handed down to my kids and grandkids and just stay in the family forever

Not an engineer, but an arts/crafts kind of person (pretty much everything from embroidery to oil paints to woodworking) but my grandmother was like me with her own massive hoard (literally) of diverse art supplies and when she passed a few years ago I did just get a lot of her stuff because nobody else had a use for them. It was definitely a sad situation but it felt nicer to have at least some of her stuff passed down to someone else in the family that appreciates it rather than collecting dust or getting sold.
Throwing ninja stars with a baby in one arm is a great way to show your kid that even the toys other people say are dangerous are fine as long as you're with adults.
