Hi Sorin, thank you for being attentive to this second-mosfet problem. However, while a gate-short can indeed give this failure, in practice they are almost always drain-source short. The reason why the gate drive is then turned off by the BQ-IC is the MosFet Short Protection feature. Quote from the datasheet: 8.4.18 Inductor Short, MOSFET Short Protection The BQ24725A has a unique short circuit protection feature. Its cycle-by-cycle current monitoring feature is achieved through monitoring the voltage drop across RDS(on) of the MOSFETs after a certain amount of blanking time. In case of MOSFET short or inductor short circuit, the over current condition is sensed by two comparators and two counters will be triggered. After seven times of short circuit events, the charger will be latched off and ACFET and RBFET are turned off to disconnect adapter from system.
Hello, I amtrying to understand the Mosfet drivers, why an how (find a very neat complete curse on Power Mosfet drivers ruclips.net/video/of_v2N5f788/видео.html) I get about half of it, lets say... what is meant by "a certain amount of blanking " please ? thanks. I want to understand what makes the charging port closed in case of first mosfet bridged drain-source. I undestand that due to the different possible configurations there is no universal answer. but I have that on an Asus X540L . thanks for reading me ,)
The good thing about Hp laptops- They have error blink codes on startup if there is an issue so trouble shooting is slightly easier for the end user ☺️
From the experience of your previous videos I thought that you will say it's a graphic issue. 😀😀😀. But a nice and simple solution. Thanks a lot teacher... 👍👍
Excellent Zorin! I've got several units with shorted mosfets that do not charge and look forward to you SHORTING the 1st and 2nd to Further Your Explanation. NICE! thank you

Had one like this the other day Sorin ... When switched on No HP BIOS screen , Weirdly when I click ESC I would see "Pause StartUp" nothing Else .... Reflashed BIOS using Windows Key +B and BIOS Reflashed Fine . Got into Windows blah blah blah no problem ... Turned it off 20 minutes later Turned it back on Exact Same Issue .... Opened Her Up took out the Battery ( not BIOS ) Main Battery and Voila has Worked Fine Ever Since .... Also when the Fan is spinning out of control usually Does mean the BIOS is not Controlling the Fan Header too ... Also that was Windows Vista Not 7 Sir ..........Thanks for Vids Sorin Noel
Hi, I'm back had a little problem with my tablet or RUclips, I'm thinking RUclips, it delete my subscription, all mixed for now, this is a great channel, I'm all smiles again 😊😊 👍🇦🇺
Go look on sites if not you will have to make a recover disk from scratch with bootable dos formated disk, bios file, bios writting program and a modified .ini file to tell the board what to execute and write..you may just see a black screen while rewritting the bios, till after the computer reboots....ence the it's name is blind writting. There's plenty of info on how to make the .ini file on the net if you look around, that was how we recovered a bios back in the day...this is old school stuff from the 90's. Sorin's probably been doing it that way for years too.
hi dear friend, many thanks for your great videos, i am following your videos since you have started. I do repair electronics gadgets such as laptops.tablets, game consoles, Mac-books etc. your videos have inspired me geat deal . your understanding on any electronic circuit board is great, please give me advice how to upgrade my knowledge to your level.
I want to thank you a lot! I was just on repair of gaming Laptop Lenovo y700 and i changed first mosfet and he start working but no battery charging. After u sayd that second mosfet Can be a reson... I changed it and its work fine! Thank you a lot! 90% of what i Can i've learned frome you.
This is very helpful,i have the same problem now and im having a problem making my usb bootable, like when i download the bios it doesnt show me the option to create a bootable usb just the location where you will place the installation and thats it that is why i cant continue anymore, plus im not sure if windows+b will work for me or just b only, my laptop model is 14s-dk0136AU
HP 348 g3, turns on, but no display. caps lock no light + not blinking. happened after automatic HP bios update. suspect bios corrupted. tried using usb recovery as video, with win+b, win+v, v, b, but it does not kick into bios recovery at all. any idea? feels like board problem, but it happens right after HP bios update.
😂😂😂😂😂😁😁😁😁@Sorin I am not a hater nor do criticize your work but do like stuff to be repaired the right way, If you short both mosfets it would still not charge because the BQ IC sense between the two mosfets as you can see on your diagram that you have showed. The BQ IC is quite a smart device, It will shutdown the two mosfets just to sense if one of the mosfets is shorted by using the sense line between the two mosfets, I have tried it before. thank you for your videos 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Lots of respect to you for taking the time to make these videos. If i may prompt you two questions I would appreciate it. 1. How can I get into Bios recovery as you did with the "B" key on the HP laptop to update the Bios. This Asus laptop keeps booting up in a Bios loop. 2. If suspected that the circuit is down to ground, how can I eliminate which component is the bad one. Nothing is getting hot except the processor, but the motherboard is removed from the laptop and all plugins removed.
The bq chip reads the current through the shunt resistor and kills the second mosfet: I think the sole purpose is to limit the current to a possible bad or shorted battery to prevent a possible fire?
I've had laptops in the past with the same issue, I usually find the owner had pressed a combination (Control button + Function button) which turns off or swaps the monitor so it can be used in multi monitor setup's. in which case you press the same Ctrl + Function (F5) buttons for it to swop back to normal mode.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge I’m a fan of your video shows I have aToshiba satellite laptop the power comes on with the logo and it’s booting up what’s the best step to clear this fault ?
Looked at a laptop recently that appeared to come on, but nothing on screen. fans, LEDs, everything but no backlight/picture. All other rails OK but couldn't find a voltage at screen connector so assumed something up with screen circuit. Owner didn't want to take it further so the job stopped there. I wonder what would be the diagnostic difference between BIOS issue like this vs. such a screen issue?
I cannot remember exactly, but here in this case, it was not a power issue, so the Super I/O chip switched on all other voltages. In case of voltage error of the display or graphics unit, i guess there would be immediate shut down of other voltages, isn't it? Maybe someone with better background can say more wise words than me, the very young padawan 😉
Good to see you again Sorin! And please come more often. I'll tell you why. @@B9NE I know what kind of bios but on the net the companie discontinuated the firmware so i have a PC with only the fan running cause the bios is dead. I can't go the the bios menu, black screen, bios is dead. Nothing start, the PC won't start cause it's the bios that orders it to start and the bios is dead so only the fan turning. Thank's anyway.

Nice videos mate, I really love them. You are the perfect teacher that I never met to the university. Should I reprogram the bios manually, I mean to unsolder the bios chip and try to reprogram with the help of some flashing tools?
This maybe sounds strange, but i have had a laptop with the same probs, no display, fan spinning full, but it was the charger! So always try an another charger first.
maybe it was because when the laptop comes on, the hard drive activity indicator starts lighting and blinking but in this case it must have not been that way and that would mean the laptop wasn't going past POST which usually means a bios issue. It's just a guess so dont take my word for it
@@electronicsrepairschool I have encountered where the fan does not spin but the CPU and GPU (laptop) keeps getting hotter and hotter... dont know if it's a bios issue or something else
