As a former Police Officer, we carried the Beneli semi-auto in our squads. For home defense, I think nothing beats a pump action. There is something about that sound of racking a round into it that puts the fear of God in people. We had pump action as our less lethal bean bag guns and just racking a round in them would gain compliance sometimes.
If that's your thing you can load an M4 with 7 in the magazine, put one on the carrier, and leave the chamber empty (arguably safer to store it that way, too.)

I say shotgun for home defense for 2 reasons 3 really. 1 hard to miss your target 2 they are crazy loud it will get your neighbors attention and 3 there is nothing more intimidating than a damn pump action shotgun. Just the sound alone of you pumping that sucker will make many reconsider their course of action lol
