"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RUclips. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RUclips, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

So, on that note ... there was recently a high profile case in Toronto where a squad of undercover cops in civvies tried to come down like a ton of bricks on some guy for no apparent reason beyond being brown in the vicinity of a stabbing they were investigating. He had his 8months pregnant wife and their toddler with him, thought it was a carjacking situation, and fatally hit one of the officers while trying to flee. They tried to charge that as premeditated murder of a cop, which recently ended in a high profile acquittal and massive embarrassment for the police.
For their own safety if nothing else, police should want it to be completely unambiguous that they are police if they're going to order citizens around.

People assume he is begging for money, which he is not and as stupid and small and petty as it is, people will call 911 and lie about what he is doing, every time he does this. It is incredible how brazenly people lie about someone that is discomforting them or they just don't like the look of. He gets the 911 calls and cop body cams, via FOIA, and you will see people talking to him, on his video, trying to run him off, threatening him, yelling at him, getting all angry, and then he plays the 911 call where they make him out to be a violent crazy person, contending that he has done and said things that you just saw he did not. Completely lying to get him locked up or worse. Then the cops show up and prove over and over, that the police in this country do not know the laws that they are enforcing.
The republicans are always screaming about the "downfall of our society" because of all the made up social and religious issues they site, but I think we are in trouble as a society, but not in the way they pretend. Lock all doors as soon as you stop, and roll the window down 1 inch ... no further.
Let the officer know that you are simply taking precautions to protect your own safety, and you are within your rights to refuse him entry to your vehicle until/unless he produces a search warrant. Second, we still do not know what the officer was wearing. After the incident, other officers seem to have arrived. Those officers are wearing bright visibility vests. The fact of the matter is that we don't know what he saw, or what he felt, at the time.
Third, if there's any question about the douchebag nature of these officers, look no further than one of them telling the journalist recording the incident, "Back up or you're going to jail, too." I am genuinely curious as to what crime recording an officer closer than they'd like is.

If there are 40 cars with lights on why would you disregard the guy directing traffic and telling you to stop. Simply a rich dude that doesn’t think he needs to listen to who he thought was security but was actually a cop. Dude could’ve made a phone call instead of trying to go around.

Can’t complain about Israel anymore when you think people should be treated differently based on Occupation, Race, Sex, or any other criteria.

Law should apply to all equally. Black and brown folk doesn't have the "misunderstanding" card. Should famous people be treated differently? Who cares he's a Christian, had a baby, or is a famous golfer... What Abbot did was fascist, period, should have never happened.

Dude was driving however he felt like. There was a fatal accident that had just happened and he felt entitled enough to do as he pleased. Glad he was held accountable. Other golfers walked and rode golf carts, increasing their commute but being safe. Scottie did not feel the need. Thats on Scottie.

I have no problem believing the officer was over the top wrong here. I don't think the occupation and religious beliefs of the victim is relevant at all.

Kyle kept bringing it up like that should give him special privileges. I mean let's be honest, I'm sure it did. Apparently he drove down the median and then ignored the cop directing traffic. Imagine how hard they would have gone on a normal person

It seems like the biggest problem Kyle has is that they arrested Scott Sheffler in the first place, not whether he actually did anything wrong. If there's video evidence that he's innocent that's one thing but the argument seems more like "How dare they arrest this professional golfer?"

  • @aes0p895
    @aes0p895 20 дней назад +5

Why do you keep telling us that he's Christian? What does that have to do with anything? It's almost like you're implying that Christians are inherently innocent.

Kyle’s a fervent atheist so I’m sure he didn’t mean to imply that. He was trying to say that Scottie Scheffler is in a demographic that cops traditionally love, and they almost always give them the benefit of the doubt. A rich, white straight christian on a golf course is usually untouched by cops. If they go after him, then the cops are even more out of control than we thought. That was Kyle’s point.

Thanks, Kyle. I volunteered with Shotlink at over 50 PGA Events, including helping staff with setup and teardown. What an experience. Years ago at the Byron Nelson, Bubba Watson's caddie got put in jail for DUI with his courtesy car and clubs, and because they couldn't find a set to match him in time he had to withdraw. You may remember that arrest story. Getting to know caddies - the stories they created in front of you were amazing. I knew Mike Weir's family and followed him from Junior. I quit watching golf when the acronym LIV appeared. I smelled the rat then, and the reasons for volunteering in the first place were ruined. I got to meet Mr. Nelson and Peggy. He was the inventor of volunteers in sports. I really align with yours and Krystal's worldview, and to see you talking informed golf brought back some great memories. Did I tell you that David Feherty farted on my head in Fort Worth. He is a real nut. Best, and thanks for the smiles just when I needed them. Scottie's situation may bring welcome attention to what we have been less able to do with the bigger picture that you talk about. He may just have found a new cause. Best.
