First opera I saw him in. Getting his autograph he said "Will you come to Chenier? Handsome as his voice! Drove thru poring rain to a sold out opera. Waited hours and finally a cancelation. Fantastic performance with Tebaldi. Got both their autographs!!

Incredible singing. I've heard most of his performances with Dorothy Kirsten's Minnie from the Met in New York and they are always superb. For the best entrance in opera, I'd still give it to Baron Scarpia, striding into the church and exclaiming "Un tall baccano in chiesa? Bel rispetto!" Looking forward to the full performance!

@ladivinafanatic I've heard that one as well, it's terrific. Everyone benefitted from the consistency in the casting at the Met. It was always Franco, Dorothy and Anselmo Colzani's wonderful Rance. They performed it so often that every performance was flawless.

@ladivinafanatic The 60s were definitely Franco in his prime. He had an animal magnetism that must have made him incredibly exciting to watch on stage and the ladies' chorus and corps de ballet at the Met always said that he and Cesare Siepi had the best legs when their characters wore tights!

Yes, but I think that Scarpia would have something to say about that!
