Disco is freaking awesome, don't ever let someone tell you otherwise.. These guys, KC and the Sunshine Band and Donna Summer are some of the best acts of all time.. and they are all disco performers..

This song is where Barry hit his first falsetto.
That bass line is wicked. Jordan, the Bee Gees learned how to play instruments as kids, and wrote their own songs and performed as teens. Very gifted and naturally talented.

BeeGees Were before Disco and lasted after Disco.... But they were able to structure their songs to be trendy and popular no matter what was popping at the time... But their Ballets were just overwhelmingly GREAT...
Disco was definitely what they were most famous for, at least in the US. For me, the Disco was an entry point to discover all the other styles they played.
I really want them to react to “I Started A Joke” so they can also appreciate Robins beautiful voice.

You should check out their early hits from the 60s too. "I Started a Joke", "Massachusetts" , "Gotta Get a Message to You", "Lonely Days", "Words", "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart" ... There are even videos of them as KIDS on Australian TV. "Blowing in the Wind" is my favorite of those. Their harmony was perfect even then.

Agree 1000%. I can't really stand anything after the disco transition because I was such a fan of their early 60's songs. There's a really great documentary on the band on Netflix (I think) that covers their whole history.

But it was terribly formulaic and basically crap.
You really need to watch their documentary on HBO Max “How Do You Mend A Broken Heart” to understand why being categorized as Disco was their downfall. There is nothing wrong with disco, it’s just dance music that made people feel good...But The Bee Gees were so much more, you really need to listen to the earlier stuff (showcases Robins beautiful voice) “I Started A Joke” “Massachusetts” The Bee Gees were music chameleons but they loved R&B which you can hear a lot in their music. Maurice played the bass, guitar, and keyboards, and Barry played the guitar.
Yes, the documentary is excellent. I was huge Bee Gees fan before the disco era (I loved their disco stuff too). When I met my current wife, she only knew of their disco songs and love them. I introduced her to the older stuff and she now is a bigger fan of the older songs.

Mo killed that Rickenbarker bass. Just love his vibe and temperament. He contributed so much….keyboard, strings, back up falsetto, and damn good harmonies. Just an overall talented musician👊🏾

I was 9 when Shadow Dancing was released. I threw a fit in the record department at the BX on Lackland A.F.B. because my Momma wouldn't buy me that album...she bought it. I loved Andy Gibbs!

Yes, sadly, there was an anti-disco movement during its height. Personally, and especially as time goes by, I find that disco was an awesome genre that should be celebrated. I had to laugh when Amber said they had slight disco flavor to them. I mean Saturday Night Fever and Stayin' Alive where disco ANTHEMS!! So yeah, just a LITTLE disco flavor. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The disco era was the first time I saw a split in what was viewed as 'in'. People in my high school either loved it or hated it; there was no 'middle ground'.
Some of the best times of my youth were set to disco music.
The inspiration for this song came to Barry from the sound the tires on their car made crossing the Florida bridges while they were recording there. Incredible how creative and inspired they were.
That is a classic story. When I saw him tell it, he replicated the bridge. Their first disco cut.

Almost everything they recorded they wrote. Prolific songwriters, musicians and performers.
The Bee Gees were around way before Disco. They did a few songs that worked for the Disco genre and suddenly, they became the face of Disco. So when the Disco craze ended, their careers took a deep nosedive. Their catalog is amazing and covers many genres. And you might be surprised to find out that Robin sings lead, also. So glad you're discovering them. And BTW, I love Disco, so no disparagement from me :)
I loved the ballads in the sixties - well written and oh such romantic lovely love songs… then came disco and afterwards again different genres! Beyond talented.
Yep. Odessa is a great album they did in the late 60's I think it was. Maybe 1970. It had some ballads, some sort of country-ish sound and even a little prog type rock.

I would say that Bee Gees and Disco belongs together like peanutbutter and jelly. But you can't reduce them to just that genre. They're real musicians and they wrote so many songs for different artists.
I'm from Chicago, and I remember the day local shock jock declared disco was dead & blew up records, and all I could think was NOT THE BEEGEES, NOOOO!🤣
Oh young Grasshopper, you have so much to learn, especially about The Bee Gees. This song was a hit for them around 1975. By this time they had already been performing together for nearly 20 years. What do you think they were doing before and after their Saturday Night Fever days (the only period you have even touched on so far)? Perhaps you will truly understand the magic that is The Bee Gees after you hear another 100 songs or so. Even then there will still be much to learn!

Disco would have never catapulted to the the heights it did without the Bee Gees. I love Disco and always will. You'll find that so many of their songs can fit in so many categories. They reinvented themselves all the time but once they discovered Barry's falsetto it became a signature sound for them because it was different than anyone else's. Andy was 12 years younger than Barry but they were so much alike they were like twins. You'll understand completely when you hear Andy. He had three number one hits in a row. At one time Andy started growing a beard and he looked just like Barry.

@@andreadeamon6419 As a Geezer who was around "back then", I don't know a soul who thought of Andy as a Bee Gee. His very famous, much older brothers already had a decade of international success before we even heard of Andy. We thought of him as their baby brother, a "mini Barry" &/or a solo artist, but not as part of the group. Now, after his drug use so tragically destroyed his health & career, in early 1988, his brothers announced he would become a Bee Gee, beginning with their next tour (which I believe was to be 1989), but sadly he died before that happened.

Look at their earlier stuff. "Nights on Broadway" "To love somebody" they are definitely rock based. They just ventured into a different sound as the time required for them.

The whole album “Main Course” is one of their best. This was released before Sat. Night Fever.
I absolutely love that this song came from a bridge in Miami and Barry was driving over it when it was creating a beat with the seams of the asphalt. He came up with this song from it. I love that man and I love this song. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Disco is great and Bee Gees contributed some terrific songs. Nothing wrong with at all. It’s music that people get up and dance to. Nothing wrong with that, in fact it’s what it’s all about in this case

During that time, I loved disco as much as the next person :-) It was a great period of exploration of sounds breaking away from the uncluttered steady beats of the 60's and early 70's. It definitely had its place in music history but I now cringe at the things I wore during that time!

No, I meant Barry and Maurice as musicians not singers. Barry was multi talented and Maurice was a terrific keyboard player and a pretty decent guitarist.

Robin was an instrumentalist as well. He primarily played a variety of keyboards, and played piano, organ, and Mellotron on The Bee Gees 1969 album "Odessa" and acoustic guitar and organ on his debut solo album "Robin's Reign" (1970).
You MUST do "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" I predict both of you will melt into a puddle of Barry-infused goo.

Robin's voice will make you melt like butter on a stack of hot flapjacks, and the harmonies are like pure maple syrup poured over it all. Now that should make you ravenous for some of those delicious early Bee Gees. Calories be damned. Jordan and Amber need to get their plates ready for some of the most emotional and lovely songs of the early Bee Gees. There's so much more available from them than the "fast food" snacks of their disco period. A breakfast spread like you've never seen, that moves right into an incredible luncheon, and a dinner repast that goes on and on. Their music rates a chef's kiss for sure.

You should check out BeeGees live on the Midnight Special singing “Nights on Broadway”. Yes they play instruments- in fact Maurice’s bass lines are some of the best I’ve ever heard! You should also check out their 1960s & early 1979s stuff and you’ll see why Jive Talking was such a shock to everyone. We said “wait, THIS is the BeeGees!?” LOVE IT!

I absolutely LOVE The Bee Gee's! Their music never gets old! They were the opitome of disco! Theirs is a huge rabbit hole to dive into. They have SO many great songs! Listen to ALL of their catalog. You can't pick a bad one. Definitely listen to Andy. He was mymajor crush when I was ypung. He died at the age of 30 in 1988. Such a tragic loss for the brothers.

"Saturday Night Fever" was considered a disco song, and this song was considered kind of funk. Like most of the other musicians you've covered, the Bee Gees changed their sound with the times, so on songs from the mid-seventies like this 1975 one, it'll have the funk or disco sound that was in at the time, while their stuff from the late 1960s sounds like that era, with some psychedelic influence, songs like 1967's "In My Own Time." And if you really wanna hear a great funk-disco song from their mid-seventies period that'll have you dancing, try "You Should Be Dancing" from 1976, a huge hit.
Disco was fantastic! And I was born as it was coming to an end. I love disco and i love the Bee Gees.

This was from Main Course, which I think was a real departure for them. A big comeback. They loved R&B and this album was SO FREAKIN' GOOD! I love all their catalog, starting in the 60s to today with Barry's Greenfields. You can't go wrong!
This track was their big breakthrough into their second phase of their career. They were Beatlesque top 40 band in the 60s, but as the sixties became the 70s, nothing they were putting out was resonating with anyone or selling. They moved to Florida and this was a new sound and they fully embraced a new sound and it opened a whole new audience for them. This is pre-disco era by a few years.
Andy was their younger brother. He looked like Barry and so Barry treated him sort of like his twin coz Robin and Maurice were actual twins. Barry wrote and recorded for Andy and he became a teen heartthrob and had many Barry penned top forty hits. Sadly, addiction took him too soon.

I couldn't agree more. I feel like they got slotted into the "disco" trend and that's where people like to keep them, but what about the decades of music before and after that era? Also, I Gotta Get a Message to You is hands down my favourite by them.
This song is the kick off of the disco years. Keep going backwards in time and their sound changes radically.
Bit of history - the Bee Gees wrote and recorded about 5 songs in a few days in the middle of doing an album (separate from the album) after their manager requested it for this movie (Saturday Night Fever) he was associated with. That's where the disco vibe comes from - but they're always borderline disco anyway.
When disco came out most "rockers" hated on it. Personally, I didn't care for disco at the time but have changed over time. Disco have brought us some amazing artist. I really enjoy listening to some of it now. Plus, the Bee Gees evolved over time and embraced disco when it came around.
Yes, totally agree. Most of the stuff that people know is just the stuff that crossed over, but it isn't the hardcore disco that was played in the serious disco clubs. The Bee Gees are great, but they themselves said that they never considered themselves a disco act, and I agree. They are extremely talented beyond just disco.
Acknowledging you liked the Bee Gees in the 70s would get you beat up in my school. I was into hard rock but I secretly dug all the soul ,R and B and even top 40 but you had to choose sides you were either a rocker or disco boy
I didn't like disco as a rocker back then but appreciate more now when I compare it to the awful rap/hip-hop crap nowadays. Disco was far more musical with melodies and real people playing instruments and singing without auto-tune etc.
Disco is short for discotheque, which is a dance hall where, instead of live music, the "disc jockey (DJ)" would play discs, i.e. records for people to dance to.
This song has so much greatness to it!! Pure crisp and clean vocals with funk, disco, and a little rock all in one simple tune!! These guys are a lost art!! Love me some Bee Gees!! They even helped lots of other artists with songs too!! Just great stuff!! J and Amber ... y'all are the best!! ❤

Check out their "One Night Only" concert. Not only is it full of bangers from start to finish, they do an entire section with just the 3 of them and a guitar, their harmonies are great on studio recordings, but live they are on a different dimension!

Watch them playing "You should be dancing". Andy is with them. Watch their little brother, Andy Gibb, who was very popular. You'll be amazed how much he looks and sounds like Barry.
Ahh, another good one from the late 60s would be “To Love Somebody” from 1967! It’s my favorite Bee Gees tune!
They were commissioned to write the songs for "Saturday Night Fever" and did it in one weekend. It made them overwhelmingly great!
Stigwood actually contacted them about writing some tracks for Saturday night fever, though they hadn't come up with a name yet for the movie. When he contacted the bee gees they said they'd already written a number of tracks for another album and said they'd send them to stigwood to check out. The rest is history

Edit: there is a GREAT documentary on HBO right now about them. Its only Barry (obvs) telling the stories but it’s fascinating to see how they grew up, started their careers, Saturday Night Fever and beyond. You’ll be SHOCKED to see how many songs they/he wrote for other people. It’s well-worth the watch. ❤️
They had a whole career of hit singles in the 60's that you should also explore. "I Got To Get A Message To You" is just one.

The Bee Gees started out with a different style but when they found disco they found their niche. For awhile they were the definition of disco. The whole purpose of disco is to get people up on their feet and dancing. How can you not love that?

The Bee Gees owned all the top songs in Disco. Staying Alive was probably the biggest hit because of Saturday Night Fever and John Travolta. Dancing disco with so much fun you had to be there. Nothing like running full speed through the gym and then sliding across the floor on your knees with one arm to the sky and then back down all the way across the gym
That Barry Gibb was a heart stealer, for sure.

The 60s era Bee Gees was more rock ‘n’ roll ish as opposed to the 70s Saturday night fever era
The beat that you hear during the song was what got Barry to write Jive Talkin'. The beat or groove played in the song came to Barry during a drive in his car. The song's rhythm was modelled after the sound his car made while driving across a causeway going to a recording studio in Miami, Florida. The working title to the song was "Drive Talkiin' ".

I watched a recent documentary about the BeeGees called, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", and I loved it. If you want to know more about them definitely check them out. And I was just going to mention Andy Gibb. He was actually their youngest brother and wasn't in the band. He had a great solo career but sadly passed away from a heart attack at a very young age due to drug use. He had some great hits to check out like "Shadow Dancing" and "I Just Want to Be Your Everything".

This song came out when I was in 4th grade and my brother in 3rd. He was DETERMINED that this song was sung by our neighbor (the lawyer) across the street and he was singing "Chad's Talking" about his baby boy who had just started saying Daddy. You could NOT convince him otherwise. I will always love this song because of that. haha

The Bee Gee`s is one of those bands that recreated them selves by doing Saturday night fever. They gave a huge boost to Disco.
You should definitely check out the 1968 Bee Gees classic "I started a joke" featuring the unique voice of the late great Robin Gibb. This song will hit you like a ton of bricks.

Andy is their youngest brother, and had his own solo career. He was a teen hearthrob because he was only around 20 when he became famous and very cute. Sadly he was the first to die at age 30 in 1988. His first three songs went to number one, they are,, “I Just Want To Be Your Everything,” “Shadow Dancing,” and “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water. A great dance songs of the Bee Gees is " You should be dancing' and Andy is in the video singing with his brothers. Interesting story about "Jive taking" they were originally going to call it Drive talking because a bridge like formation they crossed on their way everyday to their recording studio in Florida made that sound they have in the song in the intro. Jive was slang back then for dont be kidding or joking around .
"Words" and "To Love Somebody" are 2 other great Bee Gee songs, & my personal favorites.
Also the dance was waving one hand over the other clapping hands then tapping knees… we rocked.
Robin has the long hair, & the voice of an angel!! (Go listen to him solo on I Started a Joke!!) And I just love Maurice on the bass, on Jive Talkin' especially!!!!!! Barry ofc is just beyond words....
Great reaction! Yep, they were disco and caught alot of bad vibes for it and people started burning their records! One of the twins, Maurice plays key board and guitar, Barry plays guitar. Baby brother Andy was not a Bee Gee, the middle brother is Robin the other twin. Andy dies in his 30s....so sad that Barry was the oldest but the only one left. 😢
