There are 2 historical explanations. One is described in the video above. Remember the context. The context in this situation is that Jesus at that moment took on the human form but he was still the Son. In such a state he has the attributes and limitations of a human, which is why he is described as lesser than angels. If that explanation is not satisfactory the 2nd explanation is more clear cut. The Greek word used for the "knows" in Mark 13:32 "But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."......is "οἶδεν" which also means "not reveal". So then its simple. Nobody is supposed to reveal the day of return except the Father himself.

Jesus said when you look upon me you see the father. because he said this statement he was basically claiming to be God himself. his deity is what he was talking about. this is why so many times the Jewish leaders of that day wanted to kill Jesus because he claimed to be God. so the father son and spirit are 3 persons in harmony with each other making up the 1 God. they all know the time when Jesus the son part of the Godhead will return in his glorified body to rapture up his elect.
It's actually not the opposite. In Matthew 24:36, when Jesus says that only the Father knows, it doesn't indicate that He was ignorant of the day. He's saying that it's not for Him to MAKE KNOWN or declare it. Another example of how the word "know" is used is in 1 Corinthians chapter 2 when Paul says, "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you, except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." Does this mean literally that Paul didn't know anything except Jesus and Him crucified? No. Because in Acts 22:3, it describes Paul as being an educated man. Paul is making a declarative, and humbling himself, when he says in 1 Corinthians 2:1 , "And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God." In Acts 1:6-7, Just before Jesus ascended to Heaven , He is asked by His disciples if He would restore the Kingdom of Israel. Jesus replied, "It is not for YOU to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority." In Philippians chapter 2, beginning at verse 5, Paul talks about the Incarnation. When Jesus first came to Earth, He remained fully God, but He also took on a true human nature and veiled His glory in full submission to the Father. The times when He publicly demonstrated His divine power and knowledge were by the Father's directive. On other occasions, He had none. When Jesus is asked about His return, He's saying that only the Father has the prerogative to announce it. That doesn't mean that Jesus Himself doesn't know it. That knowledge was veiled from Him at the time. When He was transfigured on the Mount before Peter, James, and John, they caught a little glimpse of His true divine nature and power. When Jesus was resurrected, His divinity was fully restored to its apex to the point where He could appear and vanish at will to anyone. In John 21, Peter openly acknowledges Jesus' omniscience when he says, "You know all things, Lord." So to wrap this up: Jesus is using the analogy of a Jewish wedding when speaking of His return. According to that tradition, it's not the groom or bride that announces when it's gonna happen, but it's the Father that announces the day of the wedding. Despite all that, at this point, Jesus, now exalted in Heaven and in a new glorified body, surely knows the exact day or hour of His return.
I think the best way I've heard this answered is that this is synonymous with Jewish Wedding customs. I'm going to quote a person who said it best. "It is indeed (most likely) drawing on Jewish wedding customs where everyone in reality knew when a wedding was going to take place (or else they couldn't travel and show up to the wedding), but the wedding didn't technically occur until the father said it was the hour for the wedding." Since Jesus is the Son who does the Father's will, this is consistent and makes the most sense to me.

some christians say that Jesus knew but he said he did not know because the father did not want to reveal it to people. and I am pretty sure the Son does not do or say everything that the Father thinks and does but the things only the father want's to reveal.
I don't think this is the actual answer. Jesus sure knew everything else that would happen in the future. We have no evidence to suggest that he was restricted in knowledge must be something more to this verse.
One person I've seen said something pretty interesting. It's possible this sort of thing has something to do with relation to Jewish weddings, and this would definitely line up with a lot of other Jewish Parallels regarding Christ, like the Church being his bride, the wedding supper, etc. Basically, those who knew the timing of the wedding knew but the wedding didn't start until the Father said it was the hour for the wedding. So it's more so Jesus knowing it but awaiting the Father to give the go ahead so to speak, which would be consistent with all the other times Jesus said he does the will of the Father.

@gravityshifter I believe you are correct and Christ gave all kinds of signs of what the end times would be like. I believe he didn't tell us the date. Because if we were honest with ourselves. We would live for the flesh until he was coming. And wouldn't have that big of an impact on the world if we knew.

I think this is a misunderstanding of the times God's presence has been made known. If you are going to call into question Christ's divinity because of that verse, then you have to question every single time God showed up to individuals as a Human like Abraham and Jacob. The appearance of God in Exodus was basically himself in his glory, and this is true with his appearances in the Temple and Tabernacle, as an "artificial Garden of Eden" so to speak. In cases like that, those who would contact with God had to be ritually pure or else his holiness would kill them as if God were a fire and we were tissue paper.

Jesus knew he would return at 'the end of the age'. That being a period of time. It's part of the great clock. We are at the end of the age now. Jesus has returned to find himself rejected by the whole of the world.

Yes. He remained fully God, but during His First Coming, He emptied Himself of His divinity (called the kenosis in Greek), and took on a true human form and nature in submission to the Father's will.
He did not have a different will than the Father. He said that He was doing the will of His Father. Anything Jesus did was part of the Father’s will for His life

@@mitchellc4 the verse is saying that the Father is the true God and the other false pagan gods at the time are not true. Jesus says he and the Father are one. Jesus is the true God who humbled himself as he appeared as a man.

This explains why he doesn’t know while he is on earth. Jesus would know he is returning back to Heaven after his time on earth. Wouldn’t he know once he returned to Heaven making that statement wrong? I’m a new believer but this answer doesn’t make sense. He would know once he returned to Heaven because he would have all of his divine privileges back.

But he was still the Word of God in his spiritual identity. That never changed. God has an identity, right? So Jesus was God on earth, but limited to work as a man, with the Father working by the Holy Spirit in him to do the miracles he did. Everything he said and did was from the Father, so to see him, was to see the Father.

The Jews literally had Jesus hung on the cross for Blasphemy, calling Himself God. This isn’t a stretch of the imagination or rocket science. They asked Jesus plainly and He responded they then crucified Him for it.
If it happened, then some people witnessed it. None of them, however, left a written account that was preserved in the historical record. All the accounts we have were written long after all the witnesses would have died, and the authors of those accounts say nothing about the sources on which they were relying.

@@Bugsy0333 Well then that means we must have confirmation of that to even have those claims you're making and then you have to call into question the other Gospels including the rest of the entire canon of Scripture. The Bible is God breathed and it would be unreasonable for God to just let some drastic mistakes like that happen. There were certainly eyewitness of the accounts and while there are some books with no identified authors, it doesn't mean they aren't to be discredited as the NT in general reads like a collection of eye witness accounts. But if what you say is true, we need to question Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Paul's change from being a Jewish Zealot murdering Christ followers to a Jewish Christ follower himself and one of the greatest Apostles was because he did in fact meet the risen Jesus. If what you say is true, then he must've had a random epiphany that magically aligned with God's mission. And as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14, if there is no resurrection, then any preaching of him is useless including the faith. Christianity literally hinges on whether Christ is risen or not. Since it's been a very long time since then, there was plenty of time to prove against it yet nothing's come of it. Also, some things written in the Gospels parallel with the prophecy of the 70 weeks and so far the 69 weeks all lead up to Jesus and the destruction of the Temple along with many more prophecies, so then that means you have to question the Old Testament including Books like Isaiah with a very clear prophecy of Christ, or Psalms. So it's either the Bible is wrong as a whole or this stuff is merely more attempts at making excuses not to trust the God Breathed text and be saved in Christ.

Taking on limitation through incarnation etc., by intention or constraint is not the quality of the true God. There are things that the true God cannot do.: these are the ungodly things such as die, not know, suffer, be weak, or subdivide into lesser limited beings. As a true God, He cannot renounce (even for a infinitesimal moment) control, power (for example to create or re-created or to save), knowledge, or rule, whether it be through death or any frailty that anything created must endure. God does not hide under a nut shell in a shell game of incarnation where sometimes He shows Himself limited (Not omniscient, containable-by the cross, subject to suffering and death, hunger, etc.) and other times (when He is the 'Father') he is as God should be (Omniscient, etc.). The true God is the God of all times, without interruption, an aspect of being eternal-a divine quality. Jesus by that definition, though a specially gifted representative of God, cannot be God since he has or manifests limitations. Even to call the true God an actual father (Who begets a son) is a blasphemy as the true God is not part of the (parent/ child) reproductive cycle since He creates the stages of the reproductive cycle and it's products from nothing and can do so at once or in stages by decree. We do know that Jesus had a mother and was given a beginning at birth so, no, Jesus is not God. There is no glorification or exaltation of the true God in describing the True God as being limited in any way, no matter what the claimed reason for it. The true God can and does devise the best reason and the best strategies of human salvation without ever relinquishing His Divine post. Is there any other god worthy of worship other than the One True God Who does not surrender His Divinity for any reason or by any means?

How do you know God can't choose to limit himself? Where does it say that? Are you making up rules for God to follow? Keep in mind it says that being in the form of God, he emptied himself and took an the form of a servant, being made a man (see Phil. 2).

He just limits Himself to not be less Godly as in the example of describing or identifying Him as weak, dependent and creation like human form, Jesus, who can only exert after being given permission). The ways God does limit Himself (to stay God at all times) are : He limits Himself to always tell the truth; to misguide only those who choose error instead of guidance) to not die, sacrifice or be limited to have only this or that (as in 'only' begotten son); to not act like dependent, limited creation (propagating Himself as does Creation since He creates creation from nothing and He creates the laws of propagation for His creatures); does not display a creation-like body fully equipped with creature components including a fecal sack since He, being infinite, is transcendent and not subject to appear as His creation (There is nothing comparable to Him; no vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision; it does not befit His transcendent majesty to be associated with any creature, including human forms; He cannot throw something out of His dominion because as the all-glorious God, everything is His dominion. There is no proof whatsoever that the Bible has been corrupted as the Muslims state. Are we supposed to believe it once read as the Quran does today? There is no way that is possible. Sometimes you have to dig really deep to unlock some of the mysteries in the bible, also ask God for guidence and understanding and to reveal the truth to you.
In the Incarnation Jesus emptied himself of divine attributes, since men don't have them. This is the kenosis. He became a man, made in all ways like us. If he had all of his divine attributes, then why did he need the Holy Spirit and the Father working in him to do his miracles? He did and said what the Father showed him and did it by the power of the Holy Spirit. And what is the difference between not using his divine attributes, and not having them? Either way he is God functioning without them, right? The testimony from Scripture is that the Logos, who was God, was made a man and was totally dependent on the Father for everything, as we should be also. If he had used his divine attributes, he would have glorified himself, which he said he could not do. Amen? This is why he didn't know the time of his return.

This makes Jesus out to be a deceiver, all because of trying to fit him into the Trinity mould. Jesus is clearly shown to be a man with our nature, but without sin, therefore his knowledge was limited. This is because he began his existence in the womb of Mary, and his exaltation to heaven was only after his resurrection, when he was made immortal. He acknowledged God as his father, and called him 'my God' (Jo 20:17). Even when exalted to heaven he still calls Almighty God, 'my God' (Rev 3:12). These are not the words of one who is meant to be a third part of God.
He ate , he slept , he died just like a man but we also see instances where he do only things God can do . So seeming to lack knowledge isn't hard to grasp one we see it like that. The Bible doesn’t speak on if the spirit knows, I’m sure in a sense the spirit does since it is essentially the father, the spirit is completely omniscient and takes on the Godly duties of the father on earth through the spirit, however the tricky part is that Jesus is a part of the trinity and he was 100% man and 100% God so essentially he was the part of God that walked the earth as man and often he submitted himself to the father and did not use his omniscient powers of the spirit all the time, this can be shown when he literally died on the cross however since he is omniscient he later rose. Great question you got there ;) I don't have all the answers, but I think God gave me some insight into this when I was reading His Word this morning!! ....and this was before I found and read YOUR comment. So if you'll be patient and open-minded, I'll express that here..... (But welcome you to search my name and come talk) The Bible is covered with prophecies made true, especially in the hundreds regarding Jesus. And Psalm 139 along with countless other places, make it clear that God knows the future. Mark 13:32 and other places make it clear that at the time those were written, Jesus did not know the full future. He only knew what the Father and the Spirit told Him. The Bible also makes it clear that Jesus and the father are ONE, along with the Holy Spirit, as fully ONE God. But most importantly to us humans, is that the Bible makes clear that we are to TRUST in God. He is infinite in all ways and knowledge, and we being human flesh are finite. So although we should always continue to pursue knowing more about God, we also need to accept that we won't fully know God while we are on this Earth and limited by human flesh. Therefore, the right choice as humans is to choose to trust God and trust that he's given us a sufficient amount of understanding for salvation. Otherwise, we are choosing to not trust Him and are denying the truth of Him. So from that perspective, a Christian who TRUSTS in Christ, is one who trusts the Word of God in our hearts, even if some portions when put together cannot be comprehended by our finite human minds. That’s literally the opposite of answering the question. Jesus explicitly said that He, as the Son, does not know when the hour will come
There are 2 historical explanations. One is described in the video above. Remember the context. The context in this situation is that Jesus at that moment took on the human form but he was still the Son. In such a state he has the attributes and limitations of a human, which is why he is described as lesser than angels.
If that explanation is not satisfactory the 2nd explanation is more clear cut. The Greek word used for the "knows" in Mark 13:32 "But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."......is "οἶδεν" which also means "not reveal". So then its simple. Nobody is supposed to reveal the day of return except the Father himself.

It's actually not the opposite. In Matthew 24:36, when Jesus says that only the Father knows, it doesn't indicate that He was ignorant of the day. He's saying that it's not for Him to MAKE KNOWN or declare it.
Another example of how the word "know" is used is in 1 Corinthians chapter 2 when Paul says, "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you, except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." Does this mean literally that Paul didn't know anything except Jesus and Him crucified? No. Because in Acts 22:3, it describes Paul as being an educated man. Paul is making a declarative, and humbling himself, when he says in 1 Corinthians 2:1 , "And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God."
In Acts 1:6-7, Just before Jesus ascended to Heaven , He is asked by His disciples if He would restore the Kingdom of Israel. Jesus replied, "It is not for YOU to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority."
In Philippians chapter 2, beginning at verse 5, Paul talks about the Incarnation. When Jesus first came to Earth, He remained fully God, but He also took on a true human nature and veiled His glory in full submission to the Father. The times when He publicly demonstrated His divine power and knowledge were by the Father's directive. On other occasions, He had none.
When Jesus is asked about His return, He's saying that only the Father has the prerogative to announce it. That doesn't mean that Jesus Himself doesn't know it. That knowledge was veiled from Him at the time. When He was transfigured on the Mount before Peter, James, and John, they caught a little glimpse of His true divine nature and power.
When Jesus was resurrected, His divinity was fully restored to its apex to the point where He could appear and vanish at will to anyone. In John 21, Peter openly acknowledges Jesus' omniscience when he says, "You know all things, Lord."
So to wrap this up: Jesus is using the analogy of a Jewish wedding when speaking of His return. According to that tradition, it's not the groom or bride that announces when it's gonna happen, but it's the Father that announces the day of the wedding. Despite all that, at this point, Jesus, now exalted in Heaven and in a new glorified body, surely knows the exact day or hour of His return.

I think the best way I've heard this answered is that this is synonymous with Jewish Wedding customs. I'm going to quote a person who said it best.
"It is indeed (most likely) drawing on Jewish wedding customs where everyone in reality knew when a wedding was going to take place (or else they couldn't travel and show up to the wedding), but the wedding didn't technically occur until the father said it was the hour for the wedding." Since Jesus is the Son who does the Father's will, this is consistent and makes the most sense to me.

I don't think this is the actual answer. Jesus sure knew everything else that would happen in the future. We have no evidence to suggest that he was restricted in knowledge must be something more to this verse.
One person I've seen said something pretty interesting. It's possible this sort of thing has something to do with relation to Jewish weddings, and this would definitely line up with a lot of other Jewish Parallels regarding Christ, like the Church being his bride, the wedding supper, etc.
Basically, those who knew the timing of the wedding knew but the wedding didn't start until the Father said it was the hour for the wedding. So it's more so Jesus knowing it but awaiting the Father to give the go ahead so to speak, which would be consistent with all the other times Jesus said he does the will of the Father.

I think this is a misunderstanding of the times God's presence has been made known. If you are going to call into question Christ's divinity because of that verse, then you have to question every single time God showed up to individuals as a Human like Abraham and Jacob.
The appearance of God in Exodus was basically himself in his glory, and this is true with his appearances in the Temple and Tabernacle, as an "artificial Garden of Eden" so to speak. In cases like that, those who would contact with God had to be ritually pure or else his holiness would kill them as if God were a fire and we were tissue paper.
Philippians 2:5-7 - Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond-servant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Jesus knew he would return at 'the end of the age'. That being a period of time. It's part of the great clock. We are at the end of the age now. Jesus has returned to find himself rejected by the whole of the world.

This explains why he doesn’t know while he is on earth. Jesus would know he is returning back to Heaven after his time on earth. Wouldn’t he know once he returned to Heaven making that statement wrong? I’m a new believer but this answer doesn’t make sense. He would know once he returned to Heaven because he would have all of his divine privileges back.

The Jews literally had Jesus hung on the cross for Blasphemy, calling Himself God. This isn’t a stretch of the imagination or rocket science. They asked Jesus plainly and He responded they then crucified Him for it.

The Bible is God breathed and it would be unreasonable for God to just let some drastic mistakes like that happen.
There were certainly eyewitness of the accounts and while there are some books with no identified authors, it doesn't mean they aren't to be discredited as the NT in general reads like a collection of eye witness accounts. But if what you say is true, we need to question Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Paul's change from being a Jewish Zealot murdering Christ followers to a Jewish Christ follower himself and one of the greatest Apostles was because he did in fact meet the risen Jesus. If what you say is true, then he must've had a random epiphany that magically aligned with God's mission.
And as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14, if there is no resurrection, then any preaching of him is useless including the faith. Christianity literally hinges on whether Christ is risen or not. Since it's been a very long time since then, there was plenty of time to prove against it yet nothing's come of it. Also, some things written in the Gospels parallel with the prophecy of the 70 weeks and so far the 69 weeks all lead up to Jesus and the destruction of the Temple along with many more prophecies, so then that means you have to question the Old Testament including Books like Isaiah with a very clear prophecy of Christ, or Psalms.
So it's either the Bible is wrong as a whole or this stuff is merely more attempts at making excuses not to trust the God Breathed text and be saved in Christ.

Taking on limitation through incarnation etc., by intention or constraint is not the quality of the true God. There are things that the true God cannot do.: these are the ungodly things such as die, not know, suffer, be weak, or subdivide into lesser limited beings. As a true God, He cannot renounce (even for a infinitesimal moment) control, power (for example to create or re-created or to save), knowledge, or rule, whether it be through death or any frailty that anything created must endure. God does not hide under a nut shell in a shell game of incarnation where sometimes He shows Himself limited (Not omniscient, containable-by the cross, subject to suffering and death, hunger, etc.) and other times (when He is the 'Father') he is as God should be (Omniscient, etc.). The true God is the God of all times, without interruption, an aspect of being eternal-a divine quality. Jesus by that definition, though a specially gifted representative of God, cannot be God since he has or manifests limitations. Even to call the true God an actual father (Who begets a son) is a blasphemy as the true God is not part of the (parent/ child) reproductive cycle since He creates the stages of the reproductive cycle and it's products from nothing and can do so at once or in stages by decree. We do know that Jesus had a mother and was given a beginning at birth so, no, Jesus is not God. There is no glorification or exaltation of the true God in describing the True God as being limited in any way, no matter what the claimed reason for it. The true God can and does devise the best reason and the best strategies of human salvation without ever relinquishing His Divine post. Is there any other god worthy of worship other than the One True God Who does not surrender His Divinity for any reason or by any means?

In the Incarnation Jesus emptied himself of divine attributes, since men don't have them. This is the kenosis. He became a man, made in all ways like us. If he had all of his divine attributes, then why did he need the Holy Spirit and the Father working in him to do his miracles? He did and said what the Father showed him and did it by the power of the Holy Spirit. And what is the difference between not using his divine attributes, and not having them? Either way he is God functioning without them, right? The testimony from Scripture is that the Logos, who was God, was made a man and was totally dependent on the Father for everything, as we should be also. If he had used his divine attributes, he would have glorified himself, which he said he could not do. Amen? This is why he didn't know the time of his return.

Does the Bible teach that Jesus remained fully God, but decided that he didn't know certain things, and persuaded his disciples that he didn't know, when in fact he did? In Mark 13:32 he says that the son does not know, yet if he was the son from before his birth, then that would be a lie, because the son did know. Jesus is clearly shown to be a man with our nature, but without sin, therefore his knowledge was limited. This is because he began his existence in the womb of Mary, and his exaltation to heaven was only after his resurrection, when he was made immortal. He acknowledged God as his father, and called him 'my God' (Jo 20:17). Even when exalted to heaven he still calls Almighty God, 'my God' (Rev 3:12). These are not the words of one who is meant to be a third part of God.

The Bible doesn’t speak on if the spirit knows, I’m sure in a sense the spirit does since it is essentially the father, the spirit is completely omniscient and takes on the Godly duties of the father on earth through the spirit, however the tricky part is that Jesus is a part of the trinity and he was 100% man and 100% God so essentially he was the part of God that walked the earth as man and often he submitted himself to the father and did not use his omniscient powers of the spirit all the time, this can be shown when he literally died on the cross however since he is omniscient he later rose. So, if Jesus can voluntarily restrict his knowledge as the Omniscient God and not know what/that He's chosen not to know, perhaps we should start granting Open Theism a pass? Seems to me you either have to allow for Open Theists like Greg Boyd and his self-limitation theology (that's also God's choice to self-limit), or, deny Jesus was omniscient, and therefore wasn't the Most High God.

Great question you got there ;) I don't have all the answers, but I think God gave me some insight into this when I was reading His Word this morning!! ....and this was before I found and read YOUR comment. So if you'll be patient and open-minded, I'll express that here..... (But welcome you to search my name and come talk)
The Bible is covered with prophecies made true, especially in the hundreds regarding Jesus. And Psalm 139 along with countless other places, make it clear that God knows the future. Mark 13:32 and other places make it clear that at the time those were written, Jesus did not know the full future. He only knew what the Father and the Spirit told Him.
The Bible also makes it clear that Jesus and the father are ONE, along with the Holy Spirit, as
fully ONE God.
But most importantly to us humans, is that the Bible makes clear that we are to TRUST in God.
He is infinite in all ways and knowledge, and we being human flesh are finite.
So although we should always continue to pursue knowing more about God, we also need to accept that we won't fully know God while we are on this Earth and limited by human flesh.
Therefore, the right choice as humans is to choose to trust God and trust that he's given us a sufficient amount of understanding for salvation. Otherwise, we are choosing to not trust Him and are denying the truth of Him.
So from that perspective, a Christian who TRUSTS in Christ, is one who trusts the Word of God in our hearts, even if some portions when put together cannot be comprehended by our finite human minds.

Christ has many Titles and names, one of which is THE Father of Heaven and Earth. He is also The Father and the Son (title/name). He is the Mighty God and Prince of Peace. He is also the God of war! He is the Son of God and not the Father in.the sense that He is not the Great Elohiem!
