Dell XPS 15 9550 FIX for battery not charging and “AC power adapter wattage” warning

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 11 сен 2024
  • My Dell XPS 15 9550 stopped charging the battery and I would get a warning on booting “Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.”
    The solution is pretty simple. Requires a Torx 5 and Phillips 0 or 1 to open the bottom cover. Also need some cardboard or something else that’s stiff.

    Another possible solution, had to replace my dc jack because the center socket fell out, I've barely used the thing so I don't know how the adapter feels plugging it in, but I could see how it could be the problem, everything else is fine and it's only a month old. And we have a winner! Your video got me thinking the right way. New DC jack wasn't a 1:1 replacement and was just enough off that my adapter couldn't quite hit the g spot. Considered returning the part, drilling the plastic of the PC, but finally settled on cutting the plastic surrounding the male end of the adapter about 3/16" back, if that, call it a strong 1/8". Back in business. It was too new for all the other solutions. You don't consider mechanical problems when working on computers. Thanks!

    Thank you for the video! It caused me to do some more research, as I had the same problem. And after reading of the service manual (easy to find on Dell site by service tag) I found that such instability is not normal: power socket should be attached with screw to the motherboard! And if power socket is moving as on the video this means that this mount is just broken. Fortunately replacement part costs only $10 on Amazon and rather easy to install. Thank you anyway for another view on the issue and for causing me making some more research, so I was able to find a real solution!

    Hey Waqas, I was directed here by the XPS 9550 thread we're both members of. I bought a replacement internal DC cable and also a new 130W charger and even using these had no appreciable effect on this warning - but perhaps the motherboard connector itself has sustained damage during maintenance...

    • @saeedw
      @saeedw  3 года назад +2

      I also suspected a bad motherboard until I made this little discovery. A new internal DC jack can also slide back and forth in the area and have the same problem. Did you check to make sure your new DC Jack is not moving when you plug the power cable in?

      @@rezgarklv5104 if your jack and AC Adapter are both new there may be another issue on the motherboard. Is your BIOS up to date? One alternative solution that works is to buy a Dell 130W USB C charger. My XPS 15 9550 can charge just fine via USB C.

    In my case the problem was with the plug on the adapter. When I looked inside the plug, I could see the center plug; but the problem was that it was off to one side and not in the center of the plug. I have no idea how that happened. I could physically see it was off centered; and additionally the plug would not seat completely into the power jack of my laptop. I had to replace the adapter, but the problem is just with the plug.

My AC adapter is a bit wiggly, so while you were explaining in your video, I physically held the plug in to the computer to see if that would work and it did!!!!!!! It's now up to 9 percent, so I've taped the adapter in. I may get brave and open up the computer and stick some cardboard in, but for now, I know what the problem is. Thanks again! A quick question: I have a Dell laptop and tried to use a universal charger with the plug adapter for my Dell model (7.4mm with pin) but it does not work - does not charge. Do you have knowledge why non-Dell charger may not work in spite of the fact that the output parameters match? Thank you

    Also, if you are afraid to open your computer, or just don't want to buy a part, get some good tape and tape the plug into the computer. Having a similar issue except my charging port is secure. My 9550 has had the issue twice before in the last two years but every time it somehow goes away. This time it hasn't. Tried using the usb-c charger but it throttles like crazy.

    • @saeedw
      @saeedw  3 года назад +1

      The core issue is that the center pin of the AC Adapter tip is not making contact with the jack. In my case the jack was loose but it's always possible your adapter tip's pin is bent/damaged. Can you look inside the adapter tip to see if the pin is visible and centered?
      I would first try another AC adapter (OEM only). If the problem persists, replace the jack and see if that works. The contact point inside the jack could be damaged. Unfortunately sometimes we have to guess and check when it comes to electronics.

      My 7590 is acting up like crazy, same symptoms. Replaced the DC port twice, and now disconnected the battery completely since it throttles and keeps shutting down when connected, not sure if its the battery that's gone bad or something with the charge circuit on the motherboard.. next computer wont be a Dell.

      This is a good video. I have an XPS 15 9570 with this exact problem.
      The Dell built in barrel connector is also TOO delicate for everyday use. It has thin internal copper wires. They break.
      Fortunately, the Dell engineers put a USB-C port close to the barrel connector that WILL charge the laptop!
      You should buy the Dell 130w ($81) charger WITH USC-C plug. Use it and you are good to go. I use it every day.
      I HAVE SEEN NO THROTTLE. I did buy the new power block from DELL. It's genuine.
      If anybody finds an adaptor that converts female barrel port to male USB-C, that should work also. and Cheaper.
      I have not yet found that solution. Then I can use the original power block.

    Have the same issue with my XPS 9550. Changed battery, updated BIOS, tried two different power bricks - to no avail. I am pretty sure it is the DC adapter, I find that the pins look a bit weired. Will check your suggestion in the morning. In the meanwhile USB-C charging with a 9700 or 9570 USB-C charger works as well. I am not sure though whether 130watts via USB-C are any good for the 9550 for any longer period ? I am concerned to fry the bloody thing as Dell anyway is outside the USB-C power specs which max at 100watts...

      @saeedw  3 года назад +2

      I use a 65 watt USB-C charger with my XPS sometimes and it works just fine. I'm able to browse the web, code and watch RUclips all while the battery charges. I've thought about getting a 100 watt power supply but I'm not in any rush. If it weren't for the awkward placement of the USB-C port on the 9550 I would use it as my main power supply.
