    Replacing the IC did not solve the problem. I'm unable to figure out the problem as of today. We no longer have the laptop. I'll post an update, and we'll call it part 2 if anything changes.

    It's interesting to find this video after I sold my 9550 laptop, there was no solution except to replace the motherboard, I tried many popular techs but non of them were able to fix this issue.
    The issue is the CPU OR the GPU if its with Nvidia graphics, so simply replace the board or sell the laptop for parts (as I did)
    Cheers

    Hi, when you locate the hot area, put some alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol 100 % or. Zippo fuel) and power on the laptop, you will see the component with shortcircuit dry quickly. Remove this component and the problem will be solved quickly. No need to remove a component by assumption that is the faulty component.

  • @dosgos
    @dosgos 5 лет назад +5

    Good research here. You will see the mosfets on the XPS 15 laptops (9550, 9560, 9570...) run very hot. There is very little cooling there beyond some stagnant air and heat transfer via the board itself. I think there is an ambient temperature sensor at H56 which should throttle the CPU around 76*C; maybe that can be disabled by removing DPTF, and mosfet temperatures could go to 120*C and above, causing premature damage. The thermal paste on the XPS 15 is poorly applied at the factory and typical for most brands; replacing the thermal paste and sealing the fan-radiator can reduce overall temperatures inside the laptop.
    A lot of people have tried to reduce the temps of the mosfets (to reduce throttling and lengthen lifespan of components); some blow air into the area others try stacking thermal pads to the metal case. Blowing is tough as there is not much space or wind to spare. Thermal pads are tough as the case is not a very good radiator and gets very hot very fast.
    The XPS laptops have their issues but I don't see many of these failures posted at notebookreview forums.

I changed the blown battery a few month ago but desoldering chips might be too difficult for me. I cant tell, if its exact the problem, you solved but I ordered the two chips you mentioned and was about to give it a try before shelling out 430 Euros for a new board from alibaba.

    Well, the solution to this problem is a bit easier than we might think. You just need to disconnect and discharge the CMOS battery on the other side of the board and that's it (it's a common faulty problem in this computer model and it's caused when it goes into "sleep" mode in windows.

  • @Owl-repair876
    @Owl-repair876 5 лет назад

    What you do is first connect board to bench power supply then if board itself taking more then 10 milamps then that could mean short somewhere then you check the resistance on all coils and if resistance is to low then you disoldier that coil and on pad resistance will get back to normal on other will be low then you making shor circuit test and detecting hot component using ether flir camera or hands and compresed air......

    XPS 9550 - 512GB - 4k touch screen model here.
    Mine was acting up on and off, the same symptom like you all.
    At least mine is still able to work 100% on the extended monitor through the HDMI, extended keyboard and mouse.
    The touchscreen test and webcam was successful by the Dell test though.
    I guess i have to consider myself lucky after reading through all the dell forums/discussions and this video and it's comments.
    Still i am going to open up my laptop and see if the flat display cable is loosened up or something.

    I am having a similar problem with my XPS 9360 actually I am already on a replacement board and the same issue happened again. By chance: did you check the capacitors below and close to the CPU ? In my case on both boards they have short to ground and that makes me wonder whether it was intended by Dell. However, I do not see a direct benefit. Tried using schematic from prev model which is in many aspects close to this board, but it seems like the components are fine, leaving the CPU itself.
    Any suggestions?

    Could it be a clean cmos reset or reprogram the bios chip ic ? I managed to bring it to a third party repair shop and he used a broken but working test screen but it was kinda dim so we had a flashlight shine through at the back , we saw some text at the bios but we really cant tell if its responding or not.

      If you can see an image when you shine a flashlight, it's a backlight issue. Screen is not getting the boosted voltage required to turn the light on. You're shop has to figure it out if they do board level repairs.

    Personally, I had to stop buying Dell products. Used to have great servers back in the day, but after getting burned on my very expensive, loaded Alienware 17 R2 several years ago... no more. The first time it died, they replaced the motherboard. The second time it was (just) off warranty so I opened it and had a look. It had melted several of the wire bundles, board traces, etc. It was beyond economical repair and left a VERY bad taste in my mouth with Dell.

    I've had this exact thing happen on other Dell machines.
    Things to try:
    Press the power button until the keyboard lights up. Press and hold the power button until the system powers down. Press the power button again to turn the system back on.
    Disconnect the AC adapter. Remove the back plate. Disconnect the main battery from the motherboard. Use something plastic, like a guitar pick, to pry the connector if you have to (don't use anything metal). Press the power button. Press the power button again. Reconnect the main battery. Press the power button to turn the machine on.
    If the above does not work, remove the CMOS button battery for 30 seconds. It should be to the right of the right fan, possibly under a bit of thermal tape.
    If none of that works, or if the issue repeats, you have a bad motherboard.
