    Gilels was so great an interpreter of Beethoven. Here he is at his best. It is like hearing it for the first time, impatient for what will come next

    The whole 3rd movement, and especially the last few bars of that movement, really takes me all the way. So beautiful. The best interpret of this piece

    For me, overall a good performance with the exception of the tempo of the last movement which is marked Allegro, not Presto as played. It sounded rushed to me. No time to breathe.

    Last movement is Allegro. Czerny used to play it like this which would irritate Beethoven to no end. It's not a show off movement, it requires introspection, it's a conversation after a funeral. This is wrong.

      Christopher Bieniarz Going too slow gives it tenderness instead of frivolity. Going too fast gives it ferocity instead of irony. But in the end, the intention is what the performer decides and how much respect and integrity they give to the creator. This man meant well. After all the fourth movement is cellular counterpoint with witty themes and almost unstable tantrums (c minor section of the rondo).

    • @darquoy
      @darquoy 6 лет назад +1

      Agreed Christopher - sometimes tempo is of the upmost importance. This is a rushing Kosak interpretation lol when it’s well played this allegro reminds me of springtime and freshness - nothing pretentious or heroic in it

    One of Beethoven’s less inspired sonatas with great moments. I’m not sure he has cracked the nut. The problem is that each work has its own language. You either get it or not. I’m a bit bored.

  • @darquoy

    This kind of playing is somewhat “old fashioned “ imo Guillels is showing suffering in his mimics like a Russian warrior would do and that’s the way it’s getting back to the audience - sorry this is far away from my alley - gives me giggles
