Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata No 12 in A flat major, Op 26
Emil Gilels, piano
Gilels was so great an interpreter of Beethoven. Here he is at his best. It is like hearing it for the first time, impatient for what will come next
The whole 3rd movement, and especially the last few bars of that movement, really takes me all the way. So beautiful. The best interpret of this piece
super heavy and sweet and hiper fantasy.
truly greatest texture. this is a Mr. BEETHOVEN GILELS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Echt unvergleichlicher Virtuoso!
This is from a performance at The Moscow Conservatory Hall. I recognize it because I’ve played there ; ) Beautiful performance!!
incredible! just awesome!
Enorme Gilels, como siempre.
Always the best

8:40 When I'm laughing at the coronavirus, but then that laugh turns into a cough
GILELS !!!! ZENITH......
viel Emotion im 2. Satz
One of the very few pianists who can make the sound live on after the string has been struck. The other one is Volodos.

Funny how Gilels and Richter both take the finale at breakneck speed

18:46 : gets hair out of face
It's funny how everybody waited for the end of the first movement to cough
It's less flawless than Richters but it has more depth. But those Russian pianists are so serious!
Most of the other performances are a little too uptempo to me. This one is just the right one IMHO.
For me, overall a good performance with the exception of the tempo of the last movement which is marked Allegro, not Presto as played. It sounded rushed to me. No time to breathe.
Agreed. especially 17:58.
I liked it played faster. More driven and cascading.
plastico napoleonico neoclassico e romantico
the union soviet's funeral...
Last movement is Allegro. Czerny used to play it like this which would irritate Beethoven to no end. It's not a show off movement, it requires introspection, it's a conversation after a funeral. This is wrong.
Christopher Bieniarz Going too slow gives it tenderness instead of frivolity. Going too fast gives it ferocity instead of irony. But in the end, the intention is what the performer decides and how much respect and integrity they give to the creator. This man meant well. After all the fourth movement is cellular counterpoint with witty themes and almost unstable tantrums (c minor section of the rondo).
Agreed Christopher - sometimes tempo is of the upmost importance. This is a rushing Kosak interpretation lol when it’s well played this allegro reminds me of springtime and freshness - nothing pretentious or heroic in it
This is the only Beethoven sonata Chopin really liked.
maybe Chpin loved As dur...
One of Beethoven’s less inspired sonatas with great moments. I’m not sure he has cracked the nut. The problem is that each work has its own language. You either get it or not. I’m a bit bored.
Wait! 11:26 is sublime
This kind of playing is somewhat “old fashioned “ imo Guillels is showing suffering in his mimics like a Russian warrior would do and that’s the way it’s getting back to the audience - sorry this is far away from my alley - gives me giggles
How boring...
pialessandro you are
HAHA!! :P
Boring as Hell .... go to Schnabel instead of this waist of time
Schnabel in Beethoven Sonata's - ugly. Only Piano Concertos.
