    You could totally create a recipe that would look similar to HP5 pushed to 1600, then shoot RAW plus JPEG and use the JPEGs as like your film scans and keep the RAWs for editing as you see fit. As a fellow ‘dad photographer’ I can tell you that having ready to go, film like shots of your daily life is such a lifesaver!

    • @joelmichael191

      This ^^^ I currently shoot a Tx400 "film recipe" (feels weird saying that) on my X-T2. I used to shoot RAW+JPEG but to be honest I ended up loving the JPEGs so much that I turned off RAW to save space on my hard drive. If I were in a paid setting I would absolutely turn it back on, but for now JPEG does it for me. I'm seeing what I want in the viewfinder, and at the end of the day maybe just tweak Highlights/Shadows or Contrast in LR and I am done. Most of the time I don't need to do anything. It is definitely a time saver.
      It's also insane to me how incredibly close these film recipes get to the actual stock they are emulating. At least with BW anyways. I cross referenced many of my "Tx400" digital jpegs to actual Tx film scans and it's pretty damn similar.
      It's been an immense help towards my creativity lately. I love shooting film, the process, etc but with prices skyrocketing on literally everything (not just film) having a digital like a Fuji is a blessing.

    My X100V has turned into my most used camera by far, and a few years ago I would never had thought that would happen. I shoot it almost exclusively in jpeg and the Classic Negative film simulation or the Acros + Red filter. When I took a cottage trip I actually really loved using it for landscapes. The filters and tripod I need are so small and convenient.
    And I actually just sent it along to Kolari Vision to get it converted to full spectrum. Apparently you can get some spectacular looking black and whites with an unfiltered, full spectrum sensor so I'm pretty excited.

    The in camera JPEG processing on these Fujis is second to none. I shot only raw at first, then Raw plus JPEG, but after a while once I found some JPEG recipes that I really liked I began to notice that I wasn’t even bothering to use the raws anymore. Once I had those in camera recipes tweaked the way I wanted, the out of camera JPEG‘s were all I needed. You can set up several different profiles so that you’re not locked into one or the other. Even things like grain simulation, which so often looks cheesy in other cameras or other software packages, looks really nice on these Fujis. The settings are deep in complex, and this is one of those situations where I sat down and read the entire manual, and I’m glad I did. I should also add that I didn’t start from scratch on the recipes. I took a couple that I found on the Internet, and also just started with the built-in ones and made slight adjustments until I settled on ones that I liked - so it really wasn’t that huge of a task once I got into it.

    I still use my original x100, it's the camera that brought me back into photography and I love it to bits. First and foremost it's the classic controls, I can switch easily between it and my Pentax K1000 and not get confused by typical digital camera controls. Second: The look, between the three (and many more) the Fuji looks the most classic, it's a fashion accessory too. :)
    Third: Viewfinder. I need one, that rules out the Ricoh. Doesn't have to be optical, but no viewfinder is an absolute no-go for me, I briefly owned a Fuji X-A2 and it was unusable (I knocked it against my nose all the time trying to look through a non-existant viewfinder too ;) ).
    Four: Price - I'll never own a digital Leica, even if I had the money for one I'd never buy a camera I can't replace if it breaks/gets stolen, also I'd treat it like a raw egg and wouldn't have it with me all the time. I use cameras that I can afford to beat up, because the x100 is literally with me wherever I go, even if I just go grocery shopping. Actually that rules out the x100V too at this time, but I only buy last gen and used because I know I won't ever be able to sell my cameras again for a decent price. :)

    I own the x100v and I’ve had the opportunity to use a Q2 lately. And if you pick the x100v over the Q2 because of price considerations that’s a great choice. However if somebody was going to give you one or the other for free and you didn’t pick the Q2 you are probably certifiably insane. And I love my x100v.

    I always keep the DR400 option on. The dynamic range it gives you is absolutely insane and it does indeed give the Raw files SO much more ability to pull highlights back in. It's nuts.

    • @JJ_Photo
      @JJ_Photo 2 года назад

      Yes, but DR settings will not have anything to do with the raw files? Other than if you are in auto-iso and DR400, the slowest iso is set to iso 640 (320 in DR200 mode). But I don't think exposure settings or light metering are touched at all. Maybe I am wrong, so would be nice to see. Have you an example you could show us?

    • @EvilSardine084
      @EvilSardine084 2 года назад +1

      Yes, it 100% applies to the raw file. It actually gives you a much higher dynamic range with the highlights and exposure sliders. There's plenty of youtube videos to prove it with examples if you search it up. :)
      It has saved my butt a few times when I thought I overexposed shots.
      Same thing is possible with my Canon R5 and R6.
      The slightly higher noise isn’t an issue and doesn’t even show up in daylight photos anyways which is where you’d want the higher dynamic range.

  • @abawlamenilu3228
    @abawlamenilu3228 2 года назад

    Since you asked for the Dynamic Range setting: It actually is processed BEFORE the raw file and does make a substantial difference if you increase the value. The minimum ISO changes as well though. My personal sweet spot is DR200%. I also recommend turning of the noise reduction completely, since it can get quite waxy in look.

    • @abawlamenilu3228
      @abawlamenilu3228 2 года назад

      In other words, the DR setting is baked into the raw file due to the processing circuit in the camera.

    Hey Matt, after selling my x100v, the biggest thing I miss is actually using the recipes. After shooting a bunch of different cameras and always shooting raw, I was pretty blown away with the quality of the fuji jpegs. They just look great and they actually have a good bit of info for editing. Adding film recipes on top of that just makes it super fun and experimental. I used the recipes from fujixweekly. There’s an app now as well that has the recipes loaded in. As far as I know, you cannot use these recipes as a lightroom preset on a raw file, although that would be awesome. But maybe it can be done with the fuji raw processor. But I think part of the fun and convenience is to let the camera do most of the work. I know that doesn’t appeal to everyone’s workflow, but it was a joy to use it that way; especially for an everyday camera.
    Would love to see you experiment with some film recipes. Just don’t change the “clarity” even if the recipe says to do so because it slows the camera down a lot. It’ll say “processing” for a good two or 3 seconds after you take the photo.
    After moving to the Q2, I definitely miss the 35mm focal length as well. The 28 just takes some getting used to, and I feel like I’m always in everyone’s grill 😂. Also, there are definitely situations where if I still had the fuji, I’d be more likely to take it out and use it as opposed to the Leica.
    Between the 3 cameras, I would also recommend the fuji.

    You probably already know. But the dynamic range boosts the ISO range. DR200% = 400iso DR400%=800iso. Depending on the setting this will overrule you ISO setting. That is the only affection to the RAW file. Then again all these Fuji's are gorgeous shooting with the right film recipe at a wide range of ISO. I'm shooting with an Xpro2 and it is an absolute joy. Got eight film recipes from FujiXweekly and the JPGs are the only thing I need. To me, this is the ultimate dad- vacation and party cam.

  • @purzlbaum
    @purzlbaum 2 года назад

    It's possible to try your own recipe with the FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO. Connect your X100V to your computer, turn it on, search for your raw images and start playing. There's a good video about this whole process from Pal2Tech. After you've tweaked everything you can save your recipe directly to your camera and start using it.

  • @thomashill5768
    @thomashill5768 2 года назад

    Try shooting RAW only. You can flip any keepers into jpegs by double tapping the Q button (you can have it set to your monochrome setting). If it's a real banger then you can try a few different recipes or more intricate in-camera edits. This also makes transferring files to your phone super easy and convenient as you can only zap over jpegs which now will only be your keepers. (so you can just hit "select all" then import).
    Edits such as crop, level, healing etc can be done in something like Snapseed.
    This all works way better if you have a phone with a micro sd card slot to avoid it filling up.

    Yes, I would like to see a video about your post-processing of your Fuji 100V photos. That aside, as to settings for the X-100v, in my case, I use two film simulations: Eterna for color and Black & White with red filter for monochrome. I also always have the RAW file to fall back on if I need more resolution and dynamic range should the jpeg be inadequate in that regard. I do occasionally play with the in-camera tone curve for jpegs, but nothing radical. I turn noise reduction way down (-4). Pre-AF and AF illuminator are both off. So too face/eye detection. AF+MF is on. For MF I use red for focus peaking. I turn touch screen off. For AF mode I use single point; for photometry I use center weighted. I've set up three different ISO auto settings but often simply set the ISO manually. The exposure comp dial is almost always at 0 but that of course can be adjusted on the fly. I don't now have a wide-angle conversion lens but am planning to get one (I've come to like the 28mm eqv field of view); to accommodate that I'll turn on the conversion lens setting to wide. I use the built-in ND filter only occasionally, so it's set to off. I've set a custom button to activate it when needed. I've set power management to "boost," willing (for now) to live with its impact on battery life. For accessories, I've completed the weather sealing with a UV filter on the lens, added a thumb grip, and attached a JJC hand grip which has an Arca-Swiss compatible base. I have other Fujis but the X100v is the one I always have with me for all the reasons you outlined.

    The Fuji Recipes are just for JPGs! Your RAW files will always be unedited if you shoot RAW + JPG or RAW only. I personally shoot RAW + JPG, using a "Portra 400" recipe I found. I love the ability to transfer the photos from the camera to my iPad while on a trip, so that I can do some quick edits, and then if there's some photos I really love, I can edit the RAWs in LR later on. I have yet to do that though, because I love the JPG outputs so much! My least favorite photography thing is editing photos, so not having to do much other than minor light/color tweaks on the SOOC JPGs is perfect.

      Waiting to edit raw files during a vacation sucks. It's such a 1st world problem, but that's how I realized how much I loved the jpg+film simulation combo. The colors look amazing and I can edit in LR mobile at the end of the day. I still shoot raw+jpg since shooting raw is basically in my dna and I can't remove it. Now I'm just a hobbyist that doesn't post photos to social media so I never have the need to edit large raw images anymore. The jpg files are perfect for mobile viewing and most likely small prints. How many people are viewing images on anything larger than a tablet or wanting +3 foot prints?

    I went for the Leica Q2M...I shoot just B/N, and it is enough 1 min per photo to make a good PP. But X100V I think it is outstanding, I had the X100F, so I think it is better. I chose at the end Q2 also because is just my only camera, I had other cameras probably I didn't invest so much money on one camera that complement others.

    I picked up the X100F for exactly the same reason - as a Dad Camera! What focus mode are you using to track your kiddos the best? I haven't found a combination of zone/face detect that's really nailing it for me.

    i have a nikon coolpix a wich is similar to a GR. I love the coolpix so I think I would enjoy the GR, but I do wish it had a viewfinder, so I do think the x100v is a great choice. I had a x-e2s with a compact manual lense and I took it everywhere and it was not a pain to carry. That upgraded lens on the V, the compact size, and the leaf shutter, this camera is very seductive.

    So I shoot raw for all the photos but save the recipes on the camera. And then I plug in the camera later to the Fuji x desktop app and then it remembers the simulation used and processes the photo to a jpeg after the fact but I can also change it up if I need to.

    I’ve been shooting 100% of my work with an xpro2 for the last two years. I just use a bw film recipe in-camera (gotta love that electronic viewfinder) to give me an idea as to what I’ll be editing for when I upload the raw files into Lightroom!

    I almost bought the X100V over GRIII last year as I don't really like 28mm
    On the day I place the order Ricoh announced GRIIIx and I cancelled my order and pre-ordered GRIIIx
    40mm is my favorite focal length (and that Summicron-C is my all time favorite).
    same as you I love my M6 and MP too but I don't really have time to develop my film after becoming a dad.
    If I wanted to get a Fujifilm camera I think I will get an X-Pro3 (I had one before but sold it) with a prime lens as I love the way they make the photographer rely much less on the LCD display, kind of mimicking the film camera operation, which is pretty cool

    I found that 90%of my Dad shots are indoors and the full frame Leica Q has given me consistently better results. Other than the light I love the jpegs out of the Fuji. I do like the build quality and overall experience with the Leica better. I still have an xpro2 and rarely pick it up.

    Been heavily thinking of selling my contax t2 for many reasons, mostly because I fear it breaking way too much, making me use it much less. The X100V seems like the perfect replacement as a point and shoot that has manual controls and a good lens. Plus digital. Loving these videos Matt🤘🏽

    • @damienkphoto
      @damienkphoto 2 года назад +1

      I recently sold my T2. I loved the photos I got out of it, but had to sell it because the cost of film is expensive as hell especially when developing in NYC. Heavily debating buying an X100V or saving up more for a Q2. Both are fascinating and great cameras but ideally a camera where I can make custom profiles is what I want. Definitely excited to own one and continue portraiture with the X100V if I get it

    • @zach.sorensen
      @zach.sorensen 2 года назад

      @@damienkphoto yeah the T2 never ceases to amaze me with image quality, which makes it so hard to sell, but film prices and the breakability of it are making me feel ready to get rid of it. Q2 would be goals but it’s a massive chunk of change and also a bit less portable + no profiles. In a perfect world though I’d have both haha

    For my GR3, I’ve been experimenting with the jpg’s, and also keeping raws. It’s nice to keep it simple with jpg for everyday stuff. I’d probably feel the same way with a X100v. Man, I want one now. 😅
    Thanks for another great video, and keep up the good work! 🙏 🙏 🙏

    IK'd love to see you use a consumer grade, i.e., affordable to most, for awhile. While I would love to have a Leica, I simply cannot afford the luxury. Like a car, I would love a Rolls Royce but my Nissan fits all of my transportation needs. There must be a few small cameras that are around the $3-500 range that would serve most of us s a "Dad Camera".

  • @Losersluck_

    If I’m not mistaken, when using any of the film profiles in camera (acros, monochrome, etc.), the profile only applies to the jpeg. So when you say you only have shot in raw, the color profile is only baked into the jpeg. I could be wrong but that’s been my understanding.

    I'm thinking of getting rid of my m10r as for one, I just picked up a xpan and using my m6 way more again since covid is slowing down and im shooting way more film. but also the m10r isn't great for my family doc stuff. Autofocus is great to have for kids as thats one of my main subjects and the closer focus distances are just key. I miss the x100v for the exact reasons you said! 😮‍💨 lol im talking myself back into the fuji system. I need to unsubscribe 😆

  • @nuj427
    @nuj427 2 года назад

    Hey Matt, we talked once in one of your previous videos. We both had the M6 for about the same time and joined the fatherhood about the same time too. I said since the covid and price of film going up there was no way to continue... That's coming from a guy that's only film and maybe here and there video with my phone or quick snapshots for my folks to see my kids and that's all but yeah second kid on the way there was no way so I picked up the X100V (had to be black).
    Anyways, long story short, I only shoot it in jpeg. With Portra 400 recipe always and Tri-X at the ready. For iso, it's usually 1,000 (how I like it with film) or 1600. I'm not a 35mm guy more 28mm but everything about the x100v just feels right.

    Hey Matt, love your photos and your energy. I shot my first wedding this October and only had one body. What are your thoughts on using the X100V for a lightweight, second camera for wedding and environmental portrait work? And what are your thoughts on mixing systems? (e.g. using the X100V and an Olympus E-M1 III with a zoom or a longer fast prime)

  • @BenRipleyPhoto
    @BenRipleyPhoto 2 года назад

    Excellent as always thanks Matt. Yes please on the edits video. FWIW I don’t have a Fuji atm and as you alluded to I’ve always shot RAW and tweaked the in camera settings just to show something close to my own edits when I’m taking photos. I’ve experimented lots with the in camera simulations but I don’t like them being baked in to JPEGS (I have to do quite a bit with Classic Chrome to get it to where I like it for example). When I have used them it’s via the built in LR profiles. They’re a bit different but do the job and you can use them on RAW. Thing is I’ve always got tired of the simulations quickly and gone back to my own edits. But as I say would love to see what you do for B&W; I’m close to a good mono edit for me after much experimentation and interested to see what you do. Thanks again and best wishes, Ben
