She actually won in 1976 in HongKong. 1973 Ms Universe was Margie Moran from The Philippines. Where pageant was held in Athens the first time they had a live telecast outside of the US. That’s All. Can we talk about countries who have won but never hosted? I believe South Africa should be hosting now. Namibia is the only country in Africa that has ever hosted Miss Universe, and it was a once-off.
Some simple math. There has been 72 Miss Universe Pageants. Now add to the number of countries participating since 1952 and winning even once is a statistical wonder vs those "sash factors" - The participation rate is a proportional to a number of factor from sanctions, finances, discrimination and as of now license costs.
Host nation also plays a big part in who make it to the finale most spanish speaking host country do not give the blk contestants any opportunity to win no matter if the blk girls does an absolute great job. Great review good job❤
I do think that the Miss Peru org suffers from being a big oversaturated they can’t just focus on their Miss Universe delegate they also focus on their Miss grand delegate for example. And since Luciana won Miss Grand I feel like they haven’t been showcasing Tati as much as they would if she were The reigning queen of the organization.

The future of Nicaragua is unclear, they haven’t been officially confirmed for the next pageant by the Miss Universe org since the national director fled the country for the United States and now she works for a different organization. I do hope they choose a strong national director if the country does return like Magali Febles who is the national director for DR and El Salvador. Magali was the one who prepared Zuleyka for Miss U in 2006 for PR.
You're right about our western European countries,but we still dominated in the 1980s..Here in Italy pageants are actually considered downgrading for smart and accomplished women 😭....ahhhh,Cecilia Bolocco,my all time favorite!
People are going to hate me, but I never got the Russian Oxana Federova hype. She's pretty but that year I never even had her in my top 5. And that dress of hers is rated one of the best ever...i hated it! Angola is not a powerhouse but around the time of Leila's win, they had some gorgeous entrants. My favorite Miss Universes are Margaret Gardener, Sushmita Sen, Wendy Fitzwilliam and Ximena Navarete, but Sheynnis is now added to that list.

Mpule won because Miss Philippines who won 1st runner up bombed her final question. There were Miss U winners who won through sheer skills and excellent performance and then there were some who as you coined “just got lucky”. This girl is one lucky lady indeed!
I think you can also include China in this ONE-HIT WONDER category. They debut in 2002 with the very bubbly and outgoing Zhuo Ling who finished the 2nd runner-up(technically the 1st runner-up after Oxana resigned), but since then, none of their delegates were able to reach that momentum!~
