I had to come back and watch this 4 years later because today Mark posted a new video of Maggie. @@Auburn-ks9xi No thank you. Change for the residents of skid row require "self-care" and that happens through our better choices/behaviours; basically how we treat ourselves. That's a relationship with yourself. Can you leave your religion out of it? You can believe in Jesus if you want to. That is a different topic. I am a realist. These human beings need to want to help themselves.
L Puma ... Because someone takes drugs does not automatically make them stupid.. l've been reading Ur comments and l'm just thinking to myself how self un-aware you yourself are it's a joke!! Oh well, one day humanity might get it right instead of saying if you're a drug addict you can't have a good head on your shoulders. Pls.
The only relationship that can save you from addiction (or any other coping mechanism) is the relationship you have with yourself. Recovery comes from within and not the outside.
Barry Richman the Spirit/ God (Jesus)/ Atman is everywhere, everything and everyone. When you realise this you will find the answer always lies within yourself. That’s where the spirit is. The relationship you have with yourself is the relationship you have with Jesus. Having faith in god is hope and can help along the way but you cannot rely on god making things happen for you. You will always have to work on the relationship you have with yourself (and therefore Jesus).
And you will never please people, no matter how hard you try you work hard and people will just see that you're working hard, yet they'll never acknowledge it and say you're still lacking and that you need to try again, to keep you doing things for them when they never do shit for you. Humanity is fucked up, we are on our own really, everyone's just so selfish.
I’m also addicted to.crack and heroin. Hard to stop. I was clean for 15 months. I relapsed on heroin. A friend of mine came over. She had heroin. Next thing she’s wrapping my arm and sticking the needle into my vein.
“the suburbs can be just as messy as the ghetto we just put on a better facade” that hit so close to home. my family is an upper middle class family from the california suburbs. my parents coworkers and some friends don’t know they’ve been divorced for two years, nobody not even some close relatives know that my brother attempted suicide 3 times and was addicted to pills. the suburbs are fucked, but nobody knows.

Chalet N There will be always an Evangelical Jesus Lover judgmental fool that will say shit happened to you because you sinned. Fucking hypocritical pile of shit.
I live in a UK working class town, I think it has the potential to be ghetto level. There are riot vans and police are called out pretty much daily. Just yesterday the police came with a battering ram and took out one of the doors in my house looking for a crack addict, a boys been moved here straight from a prison hostel, there's stabbings and house raids, burglary, people doing weed everywhere three houses, two of which down the street, are within two minute walks, crack is available within five minute walk, heroin in a back alley if you fancy walking ten. go into a shop, ask the shopkeeper if they know who sells the drug you want, they'll give you the number, spoken from experience, been threatened out of a tenner to supply a drug addicted friend as well, then she was round threatening again a week later rang cops this time, racism too, neighbour threatened a family that only spoke polish, mate its so bad I stay in my room i don't walk to the shops or anything, I only leave if I'm leaving the town altogether because i could get beaten up by the lass who threatened me or by some other cunt like her mates or a stranger- yet despite this my town has an incredibly high tourist rate for a small town, and good nightlife seeking tourists who come for the nightclubs, it's fucking bad that it has such a great reputation described as quiet I publish poetry on instagram and shit about my experiences because that helps and it gives me something to focus on when I'm staying in the town or i use drugs but that's becoming a really big problem now.

Hello. I have had 3 back surgeries always in pain was on oxycontin for 4 years but now clean from it for 2 years. My leg is 3/4 of an inch shorter cause I was born a cripple. You can get your legs measured from your hip and an orthopaedic shoe place can build a lift on the shoe for your shorter leg which helps improve the pain because it makes your body level when you walk or stand. Hang in there
the way she talks i just love her... you can tell she is genuinely a good person... the way she talks about people that hurt her.. she is so pure. i hope she finds the right help
I’ve been binging these interviews for a couple of days now & this is the first one I feel connected to emotionally. Maggie made me cry! I can feel her heart, I can feel her compassion. She’s smart & once had a wonderful talent. She honestly seems like a great friend & it breaks my heart that she feels God gave her too much trauma. Man, these stories are beyond sad. I wish her the best! It’s not too late
Do you know that you actually "help" these people by making them HEAR THEMSELVES for the first time!! I love it, really wish we can get like an update on some of them. Thank you for what you do
Maggie if you see this, know that I see you. Your spirit is strong, you’ve endured so much and you are not yet broken. You have a strength and light that you can reclaim. Don’t give up, fight. We’re rooting for you.
"Not your typical Skid Row'...broken home, parent died young, sexually abused at a young age. Sounded pretty typical to me going from what I've heard from the other interviewees.
I think he was speaking on her wealth as a child, yes she faced a lot of hardships in her family dynamic but she still was given chances. She had access to all of the things that could have prevented this outcome for her. Shes intellectual but by no means smart. I think that's what he meant.
Nino, I’m open to coordinating a financial donation to some of the people I’ve photographed. Please be aware that 99.9% of them will use the money to support their addiction. If you’re thinking that a contribution might save them, I urge you to rethink that effort. The problem with virtually all of these people is not that they’re addicted to drugs. Nor is it that they’re homeless or jobless. It’s that they were never loved properly as children and now, as adults they play out the self destructive behaviors of those who just can’t or won’t love themselves. This is why I always get around to asking about their childhood. I believe it’s the key to all of our problems. Without being properly loved and supported with desirable role models in our lives as children, we grow into self destructive adults who just cannot seem to break free of our self sabotaging selves. Donate all you like, but the solution lies in the next generation’s raising of properly loved children, not propping up already damaged adults. I’m certain that there are a few individuals who might be able to break free of this fate (and Maggie seems like a likely woman to do so), but I’ve seen so many now that would quickly turn a job, a house and a recovery from addiction back into the mess you see in many of these people’s lives. Again, addiction, homelessness or joblessness are not the core problem. They’re just the adult symptoms of a lack of love in our childhood. Email me if you’re serious about sending money to any of these people. I’ll send you a video clip of their response. Thanks for watching. ML
@@SoftWhiteUnderbelly Succinctly stated! The dilemma lies in the fact that this viscous cycle is doomed to repeat with each generation. How do we, as a society, break the cycle? Our current system is clearly failing. Children and family services nationwide are drastically underfunded, understaffed and overwhelmed. Our schools are crumbling; our teachers deflated and exhausted. Our prisons overflowing. Your videos reveal the dark sides of humanity; the pain, the unique, yet oh so similar stories of abuse and neglect...brief glimpses of hope. Perhaps, some day, we will actually find solutions. Powerful.
My wife and daughters mother walked out when our baby was 2. That was 8 years ago. And when I listen to these interviews I can’t help but assume her story must sound the same. She is on her journey, my daughter and I are on ours. I still wish her the best.
She is so self-aware and intelligent...All the best to her, I really hope she finds happiness in life! She is so empathetic and would make a really good councilor or social worker
She is so intelligent, insightful, self aware. I wish her all the best. My son was an addict/alcoholic and the nicest, most compassionate, funny, sensitive, and smart guy ever, and cared about everyone but himself
I think I’ve seen enough of these videos to realize these people all come from terrible childhoods. It’s not only sad, but what is America doing to rectify this? Our country should do better. So many of these people have potential. Too bad addiction hit them first.
@@mimosa.pw2ij healthcare in the US is third world. over 25 million are uninsured. then, even if you have insurance, specialized doctors especially within the mental health sectors are expensive and hard to access. your success in this country is built on how much $$$ you have.
America focuses too much on punishment for addicts than healing the person. There is no mental health for people in these situations unless you can wait and pay cash up front. Then the cycle repeats.
She is so right, in my neighborhood there were never shootouts or robberies but my neighbor strangled his wife and kids and then committed suicide. In the suburbs the chaos is muffled by a quiet, ominous, darkness that you can feel if you pay close attention.
I knew her. When she was sober. She was the most amazing, smartest, all around good person. I’m sad to see her like this. Maggie, if you see this, you are so much better than this. And you deserve the world. Miss you friend.
I think he sees her intelligence and believes she is able to actually process advice. He may be right, but she also is such a giving person that she doesn't need advice to be more understanding of other people's issues and give them more grace. She is the type of person that is fiercely loyal and self-sacrificing. She gives grace to people all day. She even gave grace to her rapist and tried to understand his side of it. People like her do not need advice on how to be more like that... They need advice on how to love themselves and put their happiness above their love for others. She is a precious person, no denying that at all. I so appreciate the interviews, and the openness of these individuals.
I agree. It just seems like the advice adds to the confusion. Especially when he's not a mental health professional. I'm sure he means well but STOP. She doesn't need to add another task to her recovery process.
This woman very eloquently explained addiction in a way that I've never heard anyone explain before. She would be a great champion for the community by helping bridge the communication gaps that local governments, big pharma, and addicts struggle with.

Yikes what's with those comments at the end? Not sure the formal reason these people are found/interviewed but nothing in her body language suggests she asked for his opinion. People breaking out of codependent patterns don't need to be told that a relationship is the answer... The hell of it is she's brilliant & knows he's wrong, mentions the "catch 22" of her relationship patterns, and then he says "but it's ultimately on you". Yeah bro, I think she knows that
I had the exact same reaction. I have watched about 15 of these stories and the interviewer rarely if ever comments, let alone gives the interviewee advice. When he jumped in with advice I was like oh no, you are not a licensed therapist and you’ve known this person less than an hour. Please don’t.

Staying clean is not only about staying away from the drug of their preference, and the people they used with, and the places they frequented when active. Some people stay clean for a while but they don't do real work with themselves and unfortunately keep relapsing. Sadly a lot of these people don't get to institutions where they can benefit from a recovery program that treats them holistically and not just as an "addict", where they can learn to know more about themselves (most of them know only who they are in relation to horrid contexts of abuse and misery). They need to be given the opportunity to learn healthy coping skills so they can stay away from that drug when they get overwhelmed by emotions and destructive thoughts. They need an opportunity to be the best they can be, and to see how much they have to share and give to this world. I wish our systems had more capacity to truly rehabilitate these human beings. It gets even more complicated if one delves into the very core of the issue... the home :-( Thanks for this channel.
“People need a purpose” very powerful message she gives towards the end. “We should seal with addiction like they do it in Portugal”. Did anyone else here mention she looks a bit like Joni Mitchell?
I can t believe the interview guy suggested a relationship to save her....that s so...irresponsible to say the least. @@johnnymo176 it’s very very common for people who have been taken off their much needed pain meds to turn to heroin in desperation. There was a statistic somewhere that over half of heroin users started taking it for pain relief, not to get high. They carry on about the opioid epidemic and use that as an excuse to cut people off their painkillers they truly need and then they get utterly desperate when doctors and the healthcare system fails them and they turn to heroin. Very sad but extremely common. I see it a lot in my line of work.
These videos are so enlightening...thank you mark for taking us on this journey to get to see these people as more than just addicts. I think people need to stop criticizing everything and anything about the videos if you dont like it, create your own or stop watching. Freaking haters
You hit the nail on the head when you said a good relationship would help Maggie get on the right track. I was thinking the same thing! She has all the skills and intelligence to recognize her strengths and weaknesses, but she just needs someone to love her. She needs someone to really love her. I hope and pray that she finds that because she really is an intelligent and kind person. She's just alone....
But you cannot base your sobriety on another person... what if the relationship ends? I agree you need connection and purpose, but you should never make another person's presence the basis of your identity, to the point where if they leave/die, you are left with no strength.
I've been watching this on and off all day. Im an 1hr in and this conversation is so necessary and appropriate at this time. I appreciate this conversation sooo much
I admire at how honest she is in saying that she's not done and knows she will continue on. It shows so much intelligence and strength to acknowledge that
She needs a loooooong term program, she needs to surrender to the process, and be diligent. Unfortunately, she knows that and she is not ready yet. Hopefully she has time left to make up her mind and start working on it, but more time is not always in the cards.
I agree with this. I heard a lot of excuses. If a program takes 1 year to complete then give it a year before you leave. Hopefully she can give up trying to do it her way soon and just “surrender to the process” before it’s too late.
@ Leni M. I heard from someone on the street she is alive. So I came back to the comments to find the reply that she had died by overdose. But all those comments are gone now. ???????
Being re-traumatized by unrelated things is a real thing. I am so sorry that she had such a terrible accident and that it brought up so much emotional pain along with the physical pain.
My heart goes out to this beautiful person. I can so relate because I had 11 surgeries on my pancreas over a 12-year period and was on every kind of opiate you can imagine 24/7. The final surgery worked and they barely weaned me off the opiates and then cut me off. I crossed the line I never would have crossed two days later I was buying heroin from a homeless person and it's been 10 years of hell since.
Yes, she sounds like an amazing person. She looks so good, she has a great heart, and she is super well spoken..my best guess is that she uses to cope/escape the childhood trauma, pain from the accident, and not being able to do what she loves (dance)...which might have been something that probably gave her a sense of purpose. I really hope she is able to get clean again,, and hold onto sobriety for the rest of her life. It sounds like she is somewhat ok (come to terms with the possibility of never being clean again) with never getting sober again.

It’s certainly a common denominator
Child abusers are destroying EVERYONES lives.

She said her brother molested her when she was 5.
She is pretty well spoken. I wouldn’t be able to provide her any other way to get through this addiction other than NA groups. I hope she finds grace.
She is one of the reasons I wish there was a way to donate or correspond with these interviewees
You definitely right?po box or some
Nino, I’m open to coordinating a financial donation to some of the people I’ve photographed.
America focuses too much on punishment for addicts than healing the person. There is no mental health for people in these situations unless you can wait and pay cash up front. Then the cycle repeats.

she's an angel, what a survivor...the interviewer...I hate his interpretations and advice! who is here to give her advice...

There was a statistic somewhere that over half of heroin users started taking it for pain relief, not to get high.
I'm very sorry to read about your hell. I hope a miracle brings you out of there.
Bright girl, praying for her. "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13
Praying never helps anything.
Amen pray changes things🙌🏽
I feel so bad his comments back or whatever really got to her not saying that’s bad cuz sometimes that’s what people need .. so sad it hurt 😔
thank you for all of the work that you do in Skid row and for all of the time and generosity you give to us as well as the people you meet everyday.
I wish you loved yourself. You deserve the same love, respect, and kindness as you have for others. Please let someone help you if you are offered it.
She is somehow so with it.. amazing lady.. wishing her healing and strength resisting her addictions
I am in recovery and I think out of all these videos I've watched I relate to Maggie the most
Super smart, eloquently spoken.
You can have your sobriety back xxx
You definitely have a strong presence and I hope you get what you need in life
Yes, she sounds like an amazing person.
Relationship with self is so important. She is a spark in the dark and her trauma is beyond recognition. She is inspiring and I pray she finds the strength to see her gifts and allows these traumatic experiences to be viewed as the wonderful gifts she possesses. Her sister is right she is a good person x god bless x
Never thought i'd come to one of these and learn a new word. Hellacious: exceptionally powerful or violent
Very hard watch after seeing the follow up first
If I’ve learned anything from watching these videos its to STAY STRONG no matter what. No matter how hard life gets or where you’ve come from keep on pushing because its soo easy to fall🙏🏽
She. Just. Wow. She has so much insight and seems so strong she’s so close. She could be so many things!!!
