Okay, so technically I waxed it instead of using a proper polish. But if the paint doesn't have any significant scratches or swirl marks I am a firm believer that a wax will do the job.

I have a massive appreciation to the style of the AU. Ok my Father worked for Ford for 35 year, my brother was there for 15 years , my self 10years... All at Head office in Broadmeadows. I have fond memories from a time we Aussie's built great cars... I have always thought th AU might just become what seems to be happening... It's finally being appreciated for what it is. It's was a major significant model at the time and it looks like becoming that again. Buy one, look after it... It's going to become a classic in Australian automotive history.

I’m not going to lie, the Au wasn’t the best designe by Ford, however I can appreciate the series II and series III they aged pretty well, especially the Fairmont ghia, XR range and the XR ute’s are pretty good. They are a good solid reliable family car. They certainly can cop a good flogging.

    • @michaelcox6732

It’s similar to the old Volvo’s. Volvo clearly didn’t put as much effort into the design of the 240 back in its time... but that is because Volvo is safety focused... and Ford was focused on the reliability and longevity of the car.

I use to have an AU 2 dedicated LPG model.
It was an ex Manly Warringah taxi that I bought off a customer.
    Black interior,
It had traveled to a total of 728,500 kilometres by the time I had finished with it.
The pore vehicle succumbed to rust in the end.
In all that time it had never had the cylinder head removed and it only had one transmission and diff rebuilt, it had 2 water pumps and 1 radiator and maybe 4 fan belts in its entire life.

Fascinating. I've always been biased against Ford's (for no reason) but I used to drive them as cabs when I went to uni. My owner used to put retread crossplys on them and I used to have a ball, especially in the wet: they always handled great, provided you could spin the steering wheel around fast enough. This was always at legal-ish speeds-because crossplys. Those cabs were rocket ships too, high mileage cars with nice loose engines that would leap away from the lights. Maybe the cab market encouraged ford to give them durable interiors? Anyway, good times (mostly). Long time ago, though.

The car now has only 95000 Kms ( it did have 46000 Kms on it when i bought the car ). The car is still very quiet, cheap on fuel and is one of the best cars that i have. Besides general services ( my mechanic can't believe in the low Kms ) the only thing that had failed was the body control module. The roof lining had also dropped ( a common thing with a lot of cars of this error ). Still I'm happy with the car, as i said cheap to run, cheap on insurance and parts are cheap as, heaven forbid if i had a prang.

That car must have been garaged its entire life as the clear coat is in such good condition. I have a burgundy au and its entire clear coat has peeled off. Now it looks like one of those wrapped dull coat cars. The benefit of these mettalic finish cars is they rarely rust.

I think it spent its early years garaged - the clear is starting to let go on the boot unfortunately.

I've had mine 16 of it's 18 years since it was built AU ll Futura ..So , the most reliable and tough Falcon ever built . Aside from the usual tyres , mufflers , brake pads and filters what have I had to fix you might ask .. Here's the list . Alternator at 14 years old in 2015 , inlet manifold gasket about 6 years ago , one upper ball joint , one rubber steering boot , clock backlight , power steering swivel hose , a couple of headlight bulbs and same tail light bulbs . That's about it . Everything else still works and original . SOHC engine beautifully runs , not even any lifter noise and I had the auto serviced a few years ago . Technician told me it was as clean as it possibly could be . ..She's also liquid silver . Paint faded but not peeling . Absolute gem of a car ..Never to part with her..

As an American, we don't get the luxury of seeing many Australian Fords or Holdens. The only ones that made it here where the Holden Monaro , Caprice and the Commodore. Ford refused to send any Australian cars. So we missed out. The Monaro was a sales flop as the Pontiac GTO, the Commodore did great as the Pontiac G8, but then Pontiac ceased as a brand three or four years after the G8 arrived, and the Chevy Caprice was only available for police duty. Again America missed out on some great cars from Ford and Holden, because of politics.

Thats not a bad example you show here. very little damage, no gutter scrapes on the wheels. Would have liked you to do the interior as well. Reliable comfortable aussie car, cheap to service and repair. Some would like to make out its another P76, it's not. I had a Nissan years ago and it was the same grimy chalky looking paintwork. I soaked a bar of sandsoap, not Solvol, for a couple of days until soft then wrapped it in a cotton dish cloth, with a bucket of water then washed the car. it worked the same. Then polished with Kitten No.1. Good result. Interior plastics cleaned with soap and water then use non oil based furniture polish Mr Sheen. Cheaper than Amorall and doesn't attract dust.

I'm thinking about getting an AU now after watching these videos. I thought they were modern when they first came out and i loved the Tickford TE50. However, for the last 15 plus years I've regarded the AU as an ugly shitbox, but now my thoughts are starting to change again. Who knows? in 20 years an AU Falcon might be a sought after collectors item which is worth a fucking fortune!!! I recommend buying one and wrapping it in bubble wrap for the future.....

I have found a wheel cleaner by Armorall to be amazing. Its in a black spray bottle.
It is sold in some supermarkets as well as auto parts stores. It says spray on and hose off, I found it was best to spray on and then use a brush on the wheels for high built up break dust and road grime.

  • @frankno2plus1

Congratulations you will learn that the AU is the last of the great Falcons, all due respect to the BA's they have a fantastic motor but the rest of the car lets it down I won't go into the details but they aren't as solid a beast as the AU is!!
Once you own an AU they really start to grow on you................................
I've owned AU's constantly since 2007 and I just can't see myself ever living without one around, my first was a Series 3 XR6 manual which I bought with 77.000 on the clock and loved it, due to working needs I've since worked my way up to an XR8 ute which is my daily in 7 yrs time it'll go on club rego then I'll probably get an FGX Turbo ute as it's daily replacement.
But I'll always have room for a couple of AU's in my life, my friend who purchased my XR6 manual has told me that when he's done with it he'll sell it back to me.
Trust me you'll end up loving that "turd' and you'll find ways of keeping it going and it'll serve you well and you will over look the occasional oil leaks or like me you will fix them ( I'm sure made them with the oil leaks from the factory! ).
I'll give you some tips keep a spare set of BA door actuators and a couple of clock springs on had as they have a tendency of going threw them...................

When I boyght mine I was looking at BA BFs, test drove several, the brakes seemed a bit grindy in one of them, a BF fairmont I drove went well but when you put it in reverse it made a loud boof and shuddered the whole car. Peeling on the gear stick surround, on just about all of them. Put me right off them to be truthful. Out of the blue there was a very well looked after AU fairmont for sale, and cheaper than the later models and basically it had all the same extras. What the heck, went for a look took it for a spin, for my money it drove better, smoother, it restored my faith I bought it and love the thing. Seems to have character and never let me down.

I had a BA XR6 when they were new, it was nice back then because being the latest model and all. Then went backwards to an EL after selling it as i always wanted and EL and they were going cheap. By far after getting an AUII Fairmont in recent years i just love every part of it. Drives so much smoother in every area and just feels quality rather then fragile like my BA was. I love all my Fords and have owned nearly every model from XE - FG besides an EF. For reliability nothing has matched the EL and now AU from personal experiences. Amazing cars
