Shrimp is my go-to bait in AZ for channel cats. Raw shrimp seems more palatable to them as you have said -- but -- yes, it's soft and gets "stolen" a lot. Also, I find if one is not careful raw shrimp will block the hook point fairly easily. I will try trimming down the shrimp that's going on a 2/0 tomorrow morning. Your comment about saltwater fish caught a thread. This morning I caught six cats, two on raw shrimp but four on mackerel cut bait (I buy them at the Asian supermarket around us). I think any oily "fishy" fish works. My first ever catfish was caught on Alaskan cod trimmings. :-)
i’ve used shrimp for over 30 years …just get the raw frozen from wal mart or dollar general …leave in the sun till the bag swells up then it’s perfect….i live in southern illinois right by rend lake ….here it’s cutbait ,,shrimp or triple s stink bait is the go to .!!!
@@drjekelmrhyde I've also doctored up the cheese with chumslick and the blood with dried blood from Bioactive some days its 50/50 they either go for 1 or the other. But it seems to me it helped alot on hook ups
bought a bag at walmart for $5.00 and hottdogs, Dieter, this could not have come any better time, i woke up and went out fishing at 6am and caught a channel cat on shrimp. now hott dogs soaked in Texas Pete hott sauce and garlic powder are fatal and hott dogs soaked in soda are effective, anyways what impecable timing
In the times I've used shrimp, just past "good" seems to work best for me. You know, just a slight smell from the bag that tells you YOU can't eat it, past that, the worse it smells the fewer fish I caught. Shrimp is actually cheaper than crawlers at Walmart if you consider how many pieces of bait you get out of a half pound of shrimp. The spawn seems to be ending in west central Indiana, been catching lots of long, hungry, ANGRY male channels and spawned out females.
Tried the shrimp yesterday. Fishing was not good most of the day so it wasn't a fair comparison. The one thing I did learn is that it does not stay on the hook well. Even if it's still on there when you reel up to check it, it probably won't survive another cast. I thought about doing the thread or rubber/elastic band thing. If I try shrimp again I'll give that a try. Thanks as always for the good info.
@DieterMelhorn Ok that’s the first time I’ve noticed the net-cam. Maybe I haven’t been paying attention but I can’t recall seeing any net-cam footage. Are we going to see some? Lessgoooooo! 💪💪💪
Going so long without rain is absolutely killing the waters around here. I think Lake Rhodhiss is down 10ft. I've tried fishing on bottom, bobber, and Santee rig with shrimp, chicken, and cut bait with no just one cat (on bottom shrimp) the past two trips the last two weeks... EDIT, have not tried cutting shrimp up into smaller chunks. This has been bank fishing also.
Hey there Dieter! I noticed that your using spinning reels is there a particular reason or just a change of pace? I would love to book a trip with you. Those blue cats and flatheads are a lot bigger than our channel cats. I live in Colorado. We don’t have blue cats and flatheads. Just channel cat. Love your channel. Keep up the good work God bless.
Would love to have you on board one day. As for the gear, jus showing folks there are a lot of options out there that will catch fish and many at a lower price everytone can afford.
I use Fresh shrimp along with Mackeral, Our local catfish lake now has very low water with NO water flow at all till somthing is fixed but they still stock like crazy but I say due to no water movement the oxygen levels are critical and fish don't bite! Hard to get skunked when fishing the day after 6 tanks stocked but thats the case, No fishing for me still this is fixed!!
I wonder If channel cats would hit squid ? I have used it for sail cats in the gulf . I moved to ohio so i'm new to fresh water cats I've learned alot from your videos thanks !
I have used old squid steak from my freezer and yes it works as it smells fishy. I think the pale color is an attractant too. It's not my preferred bait though.
Its really tough here, went out yesterday . Got 1 but I also got a late start, one other guy had 2. Water is high an fast , we are in a down pore at this moment, up north by Dubuque IA. had rain yesterday also. At Moline river is still at about flood still. All in all its still tough here. at
I'm just a few hours south of you in Burlington, and I agree this year has been horrible. Haven't caught one fish on the river. My Uncle is a commercial fisherman, and he said he hasn't caught channel, or flathead like he usually does in his hoop nets, and they are baited.
@@darrellvice2010 same things going on up here. In May I tore them up, I figured it was spawn but its tough, I usually hook a few or alot of dinks but not this year, I fish the Rock River and know the spots to hit.

triple s cheese and blood are no.1
Better use ALL that shrimp. My wife made me say it.
Two of the best dips, W D 3 and Secret 7, no longer made. Sad
I live in northern Illinois and I'm going to try all of those from now on.

We are all blessed to do what we do....thanks for wartching.
We, my dad and I would use shrimp all the time. This being 45 + years ago. It always caught fish with it.
I've used both shrimp and crawfish, both work pretty much equally
Good feedback!
Thanks for your time.

I enjoy watching your programs and learn a lot from them as well. Thank you.
I use like using shrimp more than any other bait. I seem to catch more on it iv used it for the last 8 years or so
Didn't catch anything Friday night, but shrimp was all I got bites from. Had nightcrawlers, shad, skipjack, and hot dogs as well.
Man Friday night was terrible for me!! Old chicken and shad... straight skunk
night time is the best for me, 3 am is my fave time to go out there Guns blazing hott dogs awww Bo, them channel cats put a up real great fight
great feedback!
Like fishing with shrimp. It’s easy to acquire always available and usually catches some fish here in Iowa
Thanks my man. Been looking for a hot summer bait.
Channel Cat Yelled SHAD At ya 😊
I also shore fish with shrimp or if I'm in a boat I'm anchored but usually use bait fish.
What kinda reels are you using

It looks like Rhodhiss is about 7”-8” below its target elevation.
Nice to see the spinners on the mix sir
You’ll see them some more!!
Perch ARE Good !
Great video Dieter ,I used store bought shrimp in Santee this past week , done great , But big flat tail night crawlers was the charm rt.💯👍
Jello shrimp works great!
Whatever you do, do NOT forget to put the shrimp away (fridge/ freezer) when you are done fishing! NOTHING smells worse then rotten shrimp :)
Idk have you ever forgotten a bucket of liver in your truck on a hot day
I had a girlfriend one time who...
Saltwater anything smells worse than any sweetwater fish.

I boil shrimp for a long time before i use it. Then freeze till im going fishing. It seems to make it tougher.
I Don't have any luck around Kentucky using shrimp for bate

There is freshwater shrimp too. Not just a salt thing
never caught a single catfish on shrimp(precooked (chlorine not good idea) or raw), and I'm fishing for mainly channel cats.
I'm out this morning with bluegill and perch.
Raw Walmart shrimp for Channels. Large or x large.
I always have frozen shrimp in the freezer for days when I don't have time to catch bait.
HUGE GUT On That Blue ! He Doesn't need to eat 4 A month
what the long dark thing on your line?
Where can I buy gizzard shad near Wylie?
You can't. No one near LKW sells gizzard shad. Jamie K Outdoors in Ft. Lawn and Suttons Landing on Lake Wateree are the closest.
Great video
thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
What NC lakes have skipjack?
Gizzard shad here inE .Tn is 3 dollars each.
Would a San-T rig work good in ponds
Yes it would!!
What net are you using, I’m looking for a bigger net!
What rod and reel combos are those?

That's how I feel about bluegill, turtles love them 😑 probably 90% of the action I see on my rods is due to a turtle.
Been using the walmart shrimp for years. Works great, but not as good as salmon.
Shrimp +strawberry jello?
That sounds like a video!!!
@DieterMelhorn my buddy surf fishes in FL, I told him try some jello on that shrimp! I'll be looking for a video
Used shrimp all the time and night crawlers ….worms usually worked better
Good info!

It's a great bait, but many catfish anglers do not have, or can not throw, a castnet.
