  • In honor of William Kassouf's victory in the high roller event of the last ever EPT, Doug breaks down another hand from his infamous run in the 2016 World Series of Poker. This time he is up against Valentin Vornicu, and the mind games (or "speech play") of Kassouf may actually be getting to Vornicu's head.
    As always on Poker Hands, Doug breaks down each street of action and shares his thoughts on how each player made their decisions.

    Kassouff is one of my favorites, I love how he gets into the other player's heads. His tanking is more annoying than his talk, but that's the whole point, annoy and get people to call when they otherwise wouldn't or to get them to overthink and fold.

    • @dkizxpt-su3ze
      @dkizxpt-su3ze 6 лет назад +2

      I'm basing this on the fact that you can see on the WSOP coverage that the other players start calling for the clock before the customary 2 minutes just to needle him
      Kassouf was also being harassed constantly by the other players when he was trying to make a decision
      The other players were abusive and bullying and made up lies about him such as the excessive tanking

    • @Trias805
      @Trias805 6 лет назад +2

      You really expect them to wait 2 minutes nearly every hand and play 10 hands per hour?

    • @dkizxpt-su3ze
      @dkizxpt-su3ze 6 лет назад +1

      The players rarely had to wait 2 minutes for Kassouf to make a decision. The point is that he is entitled to 2 minutes just as everybody else is
      The other players were bullying Kassouf and haranguing him after only 30 seconds which is completely out of line
      The claims about Kassouf tanking were largely exaggerating and were for the most part just bullying attacks for the other players who all behaved appallingly during that tournament

  • @yazan.kioumgi
    @yazan.kioumgi 5 лет назад +1

    4:06 Why not raise here instead in order to charge your opponent for his draws (whether it's two overs or straight draw)? We know that his range is unlikely to have a premium hand (like a mid to high pair) because he called from the SB. Our top pair is most likely gonna lose its title on the turn so why not protect it?

      You should raise 80 % of time in small blind !!

      Only mistake here is just calling pre flop, with garbage hand ,

    I'll admit for predominantly online players, attempting to transition to a live game is difficult ,especially sweating out bluffs and or action...my respect to kassouf, someone who clearly would be unphased by the same paramenters (players talking, trying to gather info, you can't in an online game) - the final 30 players were basically all internet players of a new generation and he was badly ostracized for actually being a more well rounded poker player. Maybe minus the parts where his opponents let it go on too long because they were trying to get a read on him. He did use time, but he never was as excessive until his opponents were listening to him talk and then berating him for doing so. Just a joke in my opinion, he seemed to be the trickiest player I saw. If I was that chick I woula laid down my queens

    I've commented on this before, but you're an MTT fish. First off, you've said a good strategy in the sb is "limp 100% and check flop...balanced", 72s is a perfect hand to limp. By the turn, MTT players will bet overpairs and top pair, 2p, etc, here. He doesn't need to simply have bluffs or straights. On the river, you're commenting about "being balanced." Being balanced in MTTs is about useless. Even you have said "table image is worthless...take everything you thought you knew about it and throw it away." Kassouf won't be in this spot against Vornicu 10 times, or even 5.

It's horseshit - this is a brutal game where you're taking money from people. It's not civilised and the table should be as rowdy as the players want it to be. If someone can't handle it, they shouldn't be in poker.

    So as Kassouf do you check-call the river? Do you expect Vornicu to bluff here with anything? Or maybe value bet a 2 or trips?
    Is it a good spot for Vornicu to shove? He's blocking full houses (though like you said, Kassouf can't really have a boat here) and 87, and he can credibly represent a full house like 65, 53, 54, or quads.

    • @WillTalbot
      @WillTalbot 7 лет назад

      you could x/c river as Kassouf like Doug says. I wouldn't expect Vornicu to bet anything worse than a 7 when checked to however. After facing ~1/3 PSB from Kassouff, I do think that Vornicu has the right kind of hand to bluff-raise with OTR as his hand (86) blocks 87 as well. Vornicu could also bluff-raise with 52 but I think 86 is the right hand for the job. He likely should bluff-raise sometimes, perhaps call if calling with hands worse than a straight is necessary to stop your oponent from bluffing too profitably, and fold if his defense makes opponents bluffs too unprofitable. I could see Vornicu taking all three options as part of an optimal strat but its hard to be sure in limped pots since ranges are murky.

      Trias00 knowledge has a cost. he has upswing poker lab and gives away plenty of free content/information so I wouldn't hold it against him if I were you. You also want to keep all the best knowledge for yourself to maintain an edge I don't think this is hugely immoral since it's the only way to make poker a profession which is good for the game.

      Trias00 Simple answer no vornicu's image is of one who pulls of big bluffs, he's known to be very agro from what i heard and kassouf has a big ego so he'd most likely talk himself in a call...as getting bluffed for him would be far worse than calling & running into a boat.

    SB vs BB you're advocating raising 72s? Yeah, there's antes in the pot, I get it. But this is a bit too wide (72s+ = 85% of hands). Against an aggressive, aware player, you're really opening yourself up to a lot of pressure, playing 3bet pots out of position with weak hands, etc. In tournaments with chip-value considerations in mind, this is a bit questionable.
    I also hate limping here. People are doing this a lot these days, and I've been raising (or putting postflop pressure on) mercilessly when I'm the BB. Ever since people started doing this I've shown far bigger profits than I used to from the BB vs SB. I just cant understand how people think playing a wide range, passively, out of position, is going to be a good strategy.
    You also say "[if you raise] you build a pot so if you flop a draw or hit a pair you can try to take it down postflop". I'm confused by this statement.

    • @gigglesinside
      @gigglesinside 4 года назад

      Players can still balance by limping their strong hands aswell and you're just going to get 3bet alot from the SB after raising. Most pro's aren't folding SB vs BB. Maybe Doug's a better player than you and you're playing wrong? Not sure, tell us your name donk and we'll compare Henden Mobs with you and Doug and check out your "far bigger profits" 😂

    river jam would've been quite sick by vornicu. if kassouf doesnt bet any of his trips on turn, he doesnt really have boats by the river. maybe 86 has too much showdown value to turn it into a bluff though.

    Would you consider a shove on the river with the 8 blocker?
    That was a true Polker move at the end, btw

    • @gregoulalou2190
      @gregoulalou2190 3 года назад +1

      You can consider a shove river
      Not because you have the 8 to Block
      Max straight ,
      But because with tvat kind of bord texture ,
      You would represent 8 7 , 6 5 , 5 7 , 6 6
      4 4 , 5 5 , 3 5 , 4 5
      And this is legit
      With just checking pre flop on BB
      But against a guy like kassouf
      Who has hihg tendancy to over value his hand ....,
      I'm not sure this is an EV+ move ,
      Because if you think about it
      Kassouf has the 8th best hand
      Whatsoever ,
      8 7 , 4 5 , 6 5 , 3 5 , 6 6 , 5 5 , 4 4 , 3 3
      Sûre 3 3 ,4 4 ,5 5 ,6 6 are not an option because BIg blind just check pre flop
      But should be carefull cause
      This is a low straight
      On a non friendly board !!

    I found out last night that "Bar Poker" is the best place to practice your speech play. There's really no rules like regulated play, you can drink and blurt out what u think about they other guys hand, maybe that will bring out some Hellmuth "white magic"

  • @ozennecorentin2853
    @ozennecorentin2853 7 лет назад

    well, william kassouf's speech is good and influences vornicu to tilt, but, we shouldn't forget vornicu just lost a huge 13$M pot against Hallaert a few hands earlier by doing a very bad call, which surely made him tilt before the actual hand.

  • @Astromyxin

    Part of me wants to watch a lot of Will Kassouf footage so I can better understand why he says what he does when, and maybe I can somehow down the line better understand speech play in general. The other half of me doesn't want to watch any Will Kassouf footage. He's far too strident for my liking. It's just generally an unpleasant experience.

    It's tough for me to call Kassouf's EPT finish a victory, they made a deal heads up and Kassouf's opponent had a 4-1 chip advantage, Kassouf pretty much gave up a lot of money just so he could have the trophy and the "win." I mean yeah he technically won and is listed as the winner, but he didn't actually beat the dude. Just seems like a desperate attempt to increase his poker celebrity status.

  • @ScottHedley
    @ScottHedley 7 лет назад

    Doug, is it too spewy for Vornicu to bluff-shove river over this bet when he has a 6 here? Is it too unrealistic to think Kassouf will fold enough better hands?
    How much better is it to turn 3x and 4x into river bluffs? Or does it depend moreso on the fold equity in the stack sizes and the range Kassouf is displaying with this weak roughly 33% pot river bet?
    Love the vids and I hope you get the chance to eventually answer even though the chances of that are pretty slim with how late I am to this comment section.

  • @welvendagreat3654

    You think Kassouf will call if valentine shoves on the river? He got a 6 blocker, sure Kassouf might have a 5 as a blocker like 57 or 52 but his bet really seems like a straight and not a full house so maybe valentine can repp a full house here?

  • @electsigon
    @electsigon 7 лет назад

    Hey Doug, what's the point of limiting your opponent's range? As in, "keeping some bluffs in his range." If he has a better hand than you, he is winning in the end regardless, and if he has a worse hand than you, you could get some value.
