Two days ago my mom past away after a long fight against several health conditions. Over the last years she lost the pleasure of enjoying many of the things we take for granted: travelling, driving, walking, swimming and eventually even cooking for me, her son, which was something that made her so happy. In the very end she couldn't even see or speak anymore. I'm the only reason she kept fighting through the pain, and everything she was still able to do she did it for me, to make me happy. We didn't have anyone else in the family, it was just me and her. Now she's gone, nothing can bring her back but everytime I listen to this song it's like she's with me listening and singing, just like we used to 5 years ago, when she was still healthy. My Life Without You will be difficult but I know you're resting now, in peace. You did your job as a mother to raise me and prepare me for the world. She was so proud of me when I found the love of my life, when I got the job I wanted, when I told her of my accomplishments at work. And looking back, I'm so happy to have been there for her, preparing her food and watching movies together. If you're reading this, I just want to say to really take care of yourselves so you can be with the people that love you and need you the most. She didn't take care of herself and the inevitable happened. Give a hug to your parents right now and tell them how much you love them. Enjoy the little things. One day the value of these memories will be immense. ❤️

When we had a little more freedom to play something "off format" (aka not a tried and true hit), I use to once in awhile play this version as a DJ on my NYC rock radio show and without fail it use to blow people's minds. Some obviously immediately knew it was SRV, and others not familiar would email and say "Who and WHAT was that amazing live song you just played?!". One listening was a NJ firefighter who had a serious drug problem and was on his way to cop some dope. After the song I mentioned Stevie's speech in the middle, and having had an immediate family member with a serious drug addiction. Asked to pay attention to his words if anyone out there was struggling and to never give up giving up as there are folks out there that love, need, and care for them. A year later I got an email from that firefighter. After the song and my comments he said he detoured from going to the drug house, and drove straight to a rehab. He'd been sober ever since.
