Having 1 raccoon in the house is like having 3, 5 year olds on crystal meth. They are MUCH stronger and more destructive than you can imagine. Scratches and biting is normal.

I had a raccoon as a kid. He slept in my motorcycle helmet until he was bottle weaned. After that he wasn't allowed in the house unless under direct supervision however he was never caged and ran free outside and would come running out of the woods when called. His name was Baretta and he loved riding my motorcycle with me and I took him almost everywhere I went. He loved the ocean at O.C. Maryland and never hurt anyone bad enough for medical treatment. He was my best friend and pet I ever had. This was about 45 years ago and I still miss him.

When I was a kid, we inherited 2 baby raccoons which we kept for about 6 months.
They were extremely intelligent, would open drawers, cabinets - you name it.
If you were lying on the couch, they would feel your face with their hands while looking away, kind of like a blind person.
    They didn't bite.
Here's my favorite story about the female:
We had a large coffee can that was about 1/3 of the way full with miscellaneous nuts, washers, screws etc.
We would then pick out something from the can and give it to the female. She would pat it in her hands, getting the "feel" of it.
We would then throw the piece back into the can and mix it up.
She would put one hand into the can and swish it around while looking away (like they always do).
She would eventually pull out her hand with the exact same piece in it - every time!
One time the female somehow got lost inside the walls of our house. We thought she was gonna die in there but after a while she came out through the basement!

Give it food(not from hand), don't actively watch it eat. It's preferable if you are around when you feed it, so they know who to trust. Make sure you make it a routine as well. Eventually, (varying on the how the area treats raccoons) one will gradually begin to trust you. Starting with a baby is the best option, but as the video says replacing the mother is complicated.

My 10 year old cousin raised one. It was loyal only to her, and she could handle it and play with it. Everyone else was barely tolerated at a distance. They lived in the country and it was able to adapt to living free. It came back every spring for a brief visit to show off her babies which she kept at a distance. It would bang on the door and they'd give her something to eat, and then she'd go away for another year. They're super intelligent but still a wild animal and if they feel threatened they will puff up and snarl and lunge at you.

Our family has raised 4, 1 at a time of course, and each one was different, but each one was friendly only towards the person that fed it. We traded the feeding chores, and in a few days the raccoon would be affectionate to it's new caregiver. Wonderful pets, but really hard on the furniture.

I feed raccoons on my porch. They are little people with unique personalities. They come by at around the same time each day (different times for different guests). They are incredibly clean and eat every crumb. I joke that they bring their own dishwasher. One brings her six kids who are adorable. One single raccoon knocks my broom down so it hits my front door to let me know she is there. Some will take food from my hands. They are all very polite and gentle.

You forgot to mention that they collect anything shinny; coins, keys, school supplies, silverwear, jewlry. Had one as a pet grew up on a farm. Had him in the house sometimes slept in my room. His name was cinnamon. On night he didn't come home he spent the night outdoors. Spent the whole night stealing the neighbors fruits and vegetables they were going to can the next day. That racoon of mine stole cucumbers, squash, apples, eggplants, different kinds of squah, corn, peaches, pears ect. The one that got me was the huge watermelon. I still wonder how he got it up that hill, across the road and through our yard and up 5 stairs to put everything on our front porch! Imagine that he was a definite little rascal got me in a lot of trouble. That he did. Mainly they didn't know I had him. Grandpa and Lonny gave him to me. They only found out when the neighbors called and wanted there produce back. They had several different garden areas they owned slot of land. Thank God we were very close to our neighbors. We all got a kick out of the story of our little thief in the night. Thanks for listening. I loved him a lot I was only 9-10.

We’ve rescued and rehabbed several baby raccoons. There is no creature cuter. But even as a baby when their teeth aren’t particularly SHARP, they still have VERY powerful jaws so it can still hurt a LOT when they bite, playfully or not. But we don’t keep them, never more than a few months. But when they see you in the morning and they yawn and troll and stretch their little baby hands out for you it’s beyond adorable!

They got him as a baby and raised him as one of the family. He never bit me but he would grab a finger with his teeth and not let go until I pried it out. I think Rosco just assumed he was an extremely agile cat having 3 others roaming the house.

Having hands-on experience with an exotic pet before committing to adopting it should be the norm, imo. So many cases of pets being abandoned or rehomed could be avoided if more prospective owners really took the time to learn what life with that animal actually entails.

I found a baby racoon in the yard at my dad's cabin when I was 16. I got it some lactose free formula and raised it up. It was super friendly smart and cute. It would get a bit wild when in heat. The rest of the time no problem other than securing all shiny items. If you've baby proofed a house it's the same thing just all the way to ceiling. And I never forced it to stay inside it would go out and climb tree's and stuff. The real struggle was keeping it diurnal at first it was up all night and that was annoying. There definitely not dog's they are much smarter and have hands so can do much more but also enjoy alot of dog like games like play fighting and such. I would gladly have another unfortunately its not allowed where I live. But don't believe this video if you can handle snakes and lizards or large birds you can handle a racoon. But if you have trouble training a dog like pitbull or Rottweiler type dog maybe not good idea.

@@stevekolbet1431 so you prefer people just let orphaned baby animals die instead of giving them a chance at living ? It's people that think like you is what is wrong with humanity. We need more people who care about every living creatures survival and who are willing to give nature a helping hand whenever it's needed .. to all all the people who have stepped in to help and rescued wildlife that would've suffered and died without human intervention. Thank You so much for your kindness and empathy, all lives are precious no matter how great or small they are , Humans are supposed to be the good shepards of this earth and to look after care for and respect all living things on earth . Instead we have allowed power hungry , greedy and narcissistic humans to grab up all the lands , and create made up laws that we can't even live where we chose and because of their greed and cruelty they have made hundreds of birds and wildlife become extinct, polluted the water sources, cut down their habitats to make way for 50 shopping centers and leaving wildlife without a home and when they begin to look for food in the dumpsters or beg for handout from people then the so called experts label the animal's as being aggressive. And the so called animal experts are all happy and eager to euthanize the wildlife who were hungry because their habitat was stolen from them by the greedy humans .Another thing i have a problem with is the bad reputation certain animals get like raccoons who are highly intelligent but the experts continue to preach that they are all violent and vicious and are all rabid and that puts the raccoons lives in very dangerous predicaments and are more susceptible to being abused and tortured . If raccoons are so dangerous and full of dangerous and deadly diseases to humans then wouldn't it make more sense for those wildlife experts to capture and administer medications that will kill the deadly roundworms they carry and giving them rabies and distemper vaccines, then tagging them and releasing them back into the wild ? Also have you ever noticed that all the experts who have something to say about every aspect of our lives are always advocating against any thing that people enjoy in life ? Sorry for the long winded rant .. 😁🥰

Yea, a friend of mine had a couple of racoons as pets. Definitely not for me. I could put up with the occasional scratches and biting, but what I found intolerable is their attitude about the home. As my friend put it: "their attitude seems to be, 'what's theirs is theirs, and what's mine is up for grabs!' " He had to be very careful where he left things like his car keys ...

They usually headed out after a year. Some came back for visits or to show off a litter. The next spring we just scoop up another by its mother who got hit by the side of the rode. I have a cat flap and it took one of them about 2 seconds to figure it out (faster than the cat) and I keep catching him almost getting into my house! I go out to refill the water and tonight they all had to come and inspect the water jug! They’re cute, but in no way are they coming (invited) into my house. Nor am I feeding them- they’re healthy enough! Even the awkward, whiny runt is doing well! Toronto had plenty of food for wildlife!

In 2018, 2019 & 2020,..Raccoons would routinely push open my back door and get into my kitchen,....I kept bowls and bags of cat food in there to feed lost and run-away cats, that would visit from my neighborhood. 2 to 3 cats came by every day. I live near a college campus, and students cat's would routinely run away or escape, during a move to a new apartment. I moved there because of that, I always saw friendly cats roaming the streets. I have always had "indoor" cats of my own, who are not allowed outside, except under strict supervision, or in an enclosed, screened-in porch. The Raccoons probably smelled the dry cat food or followed the lost cats, to where they hung out. Every so often a mother & baby Raccoon, would get scared when I came into my kitchen, and they'd hide behind the stove or in a cabinet. I sometimes didn't even know it. I wouldn't see them and when I locked my doors up for the night, they were trapped in my kitchen until morning. We both were alarmed when I saw them the next morning,....we both froze in our tracks. I tried not to startle them and would coax them out,....sometimes the mom Raccoon would run out but the baby ones, were too scared. They were all so cute, and their fur is so fluffy. They wash their paws that resemble small human hands, before eating. They are not fussy and will eat just about any kind of dried cat food.

With raccoons I expect it would take probably take around 25 to 30 years depending on the selection methods used. I find life boring if I just get a dog or a cat which are common pets everyone always gets. The reason I like raccoons so much is that they seem so bold and curious. For example: a dog might get scared of fireworks or hostile and start barking and such, but a raccoon would just want to examine or even play with it.

If you do plan on getting a coon don't worry about the scatches as much you'll need to worry about the rabies more make sure it has its shots and you'll want to feed it K.M.R for the first 5 weeks of its life then start adding a little banana baby food or smash wet cat food both work (baby works a bit better tho) and at 9 weeks ween it of the bottle so by 10 weeks it should be eating solid for and drinking only water (also make sure until it poops by itself take a WARM wash cloth and rub in a upward motion to its belly [anus- belly] also burp it after feeding session 1-9 weeks) well that's all I can help you with if you do get a coon so yea have fun if you do

@@Moc1Night Wow, that's very detailed. I don't plan on getting one for at least a few years but when I do I'll make sure to come back and re read this as it seems like it'll be a big help. Thanks!

Who said monkeys don't have hands with fingers? I have a troop of Vervet monkeys who visit me a couple of times a week. Always looking for a snack, and sometimes spend hours playing in my garden. Incidently, they even have fingerlike toes.RSA.

I had a raccoon that I got from a house I was building for a customer. On day I heard chirping above the garage ceiling. There was a bonus room above the garage and 16’ joists. Long story short, I got the raccoons and the mother out. I put them in the woods but the next day one of the babies was still where I left them. I started bottle feeding and later the raccoon was my best friend. She was so good and playful and an amazement to me everyday. My raccoon was my friend. I was the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes after two weeks. She was the happiest I have ever been in my life. I loved her and loved taking care of her. That raccoon gave me the happiest days of my life.

Wife and I found an infant raccoon that still has its eyes shut and currently bottle feeding it. But we have serious reservations about "keeping" him. Could you go into more detail about your experience? Does us getting them that young effect how tame they can be?
