I love the fact that Rick would rather spend minutes building a robot to pass butter instead of just getting up and getting it in like less than a minute😂
Or that time mortys mom started getting the shakes and drinking heavily after shooting a family friend in that clone alien thing episode. It's actually a real dark show sometimes
Fun fact: Justin Roiland (voicer of rick and morty) during this episode was voicing lemongrab from adventure time which strained his vocals and left him speechless for 2 weeks. The only sort of communication he had was through an app that spoke for him. And by justin’s own words he said “the way the app spoke for me sounded so depressing” and with this he used the app’s voice to voice the butter robot this episode
+Max Moran Not quite. The butter was in easy reach. It's probably more of a "if you could make a robot intelligent enough to pass the butter from wherever it might be, why not do that, even if the butter is nearby right now?"
***** Well, theism is pretty broad. My stance on it is neutral, and though I don't believe in a god or gods, I respect someone's choice to. Inherently I think it is logically flawed, but theism itself does nothing wrong. I only have an issue when people begin to do unjust things in the name of religion, based on the principles their supposed god(s) have assigned. Only then do I have an issue. A belief that harms no one, even if personally illogical to me, I have no problem with. For some, a belief in a god is refuge. It is comfort, and I respect this. As with anything, it can be used in good or bad ways.
***** He sounds like a spiteful and ignorant person. Christians can think for themselves, and although religion is usually passed on through family, I have met people who cam to Christianity on their own terms. You can certainly make debates for why the belief in a god is logical, too.

Space is seemingly never ending and time ticks on. 100 billion people have roamed this Earth all with their own emotions, experiences, relationships. No one is special but everyone is unique. Self awareness is a cruel thing.
read a theory that this butter will be the one to break rick out of prison. morty or summers will ask the robot to pass butter to rick, then the robot will go through entire security to 'pass the butter'. that would be awesome
I think it'd be more interesting if he breaks Rick out of his own free will, and breaks through the barriers of what his defined "purpose" was to forge ahead and make his own future! :D
Life and Gaming I think It's sort of his sort of philosofical art, he believes that exsistance is pain and misery loves company, a self aware butterbot is the result
alejandro cano. How many toasters do you know that have a perception of God and a longing to no of its powers. Rick made it artificially intelligent for no other reason to have someone share his futility of life.
My take is that he didn't program the robot to pass the butter because it's so beneath him (simple programing? - ach!) and made it sentient instead. But yeah, Rick doesn't even give a hoot for the misery the robots life has now become.
What is my purpose? Hey, i found out your new purpose, you can give out cyanide pills to "Fifty Shades of Gray" fans saying that they simulate the scenes from the book.
Rick also gave that robot opportunity, to reach for a higher purpose, by giving it thoughs and emotions Ricks purpose towards it its passing the butter, but the robot can find a higher purpose towards existence and itself ;-)
***** I ment repeat creation, not recreat* Most ppl think that if you truly believe that you are your own god, you have no limits and control, and you can do whatever you want, and commit the most heinous of crimes - as you said it as well - because they would think and act that way in that situation In this case only fear (of god) is keeping them away of doing heinous of crimes But the true is - my true, ofc, as I see it - if you see god inside, rather than (only) outside, you take over the responsibility as well If you think about it, its always self control anyway, no matter who is your god If you project a god into the outside world, and dont do things because of Him, in the end you are to one who wont do those things -> self control I believe there is a level, where you are free, there is no god to punish you, there's no karma which would bring back all the bad things to us, and we still wont do nothing harmful, not because of god, not because of karma, but because its not the right thing to do
It'll take 2-3 days for Jerry and Morty to finish that project..... It took Rick not even 10 seconds to make a conscious robot that could pass butter and think for itself... Wow... When put into perspective... Rick is the smartest cartoon character ever created...
he'll earn that title if in series 3 the fan theory comes true and that robot saves him when morty tells it to 'pass rick the butter' and the wee bastard shifts heaven and earth to do it becuase it is his only goddamn purpose.
Human; What is my purpose God: You fuck and make more of your selves, then you die. Human: [looks at hands] Oh my god! God: yeah, welcome to the club pal.
You know the good thing though? We can subvert our "intended" function as gene replicators. It's a rough guideline, not a programmed imperative like a robot's.
threenumbnuts No it is impulse in us, sure we can override it, but we are compelled none the less and it feels really good. It takes a good deal of force of will to overcome these lower brain functions, and many people simply rationalize their primordial desires to reproduce so that they can have their higher functions in agreement with their animalistic functions. How exactly sentient machines will comply with programing is unknown: will they be compelled like our impulses to pass the butter, and feel good when completing the task? In the more recent experiments with neuromorphics, a robot with a neuromorphic chip was trained to avoid crossing white squares and to cross red squares, neural pathways that were active when it crossed a white square would be downgraded and pathways active when it pass over a red square would be re-enforced. The robot would learn to avoid white squares very quickly and would drive over the red squares back and forth incessantly trying to get more neural reinforcement: sounds a lot like pain and pleasure.
frbe0101 You're missing the part where we developed vasectomies and tube-tying, nothing comparable to that in robotics (AFAIK). We can subvert our function in the space of a 3-hour procedure.
threenumbnuts Most people don't, most people would be hard pressed to sterilize themselves, at least without already having had kids. There a philosophical theory (can't remember the name) where most people are just animals most of the time, that the only time you are truly sentient is when you override impulse and make a purely rational decision on a goal and purpose of your own creation, and then you got back to being a beast, eating, sleeping and fucking as impulse dictates.
I like how morty's dad said it'd take them 3 days to complete a simple science project, and then you see that rick has built a self-aware automated butter-serving robot in a matter of minutes.
I love that Jerry needs two or three days to help with a high school science fair project while Rick creates a sentient robot that has its own existential crisis while eating pancakes.
At least the robot was made for a purpose in this dimension and not a new dimension solely created to fuel a car battery. It could have been worse, actually.
Tens of thousands of Human history, languages, culture, art, and you guys still can't tell the difference between There, They're and Their. Fucking pisses me off. English ain't even my native language.
+Bob John That shit is funny. Why did he make it sentient? Like someone else already mentioned, that means Rick would have had to put in extra work and coding into his creation to make it self-aware.
Everytime I watch this I find it amazing how Rick literally builds a self aware robot.... Goes to show just how much he doesn't care for human interaction, saying "Beth, pass the butter", is way to much for him.
Fun fact - after voicing lemongrab on adventure time, Justin wrecked his vocal cords and had to rest them for weeks, so he used a text to talk machine to communicate. That's what the butter robot's voice is :)
Always wondered why Rick says "welcome to the club" to the robot. Then I realized the similarity between Rick's situation and the robot's situation. The robot has so much potential but is only made to pass butter, while Rick is capable of so much more but has to drive Summer to work or help Morty do science project.
2wingo To be honest, If I was a robot that was made to pass butter, and that was my only purpose, I would like Rick to tell me the Harsh truth of reality than candy colored sweet sweet lies. But thats just me.
***** Wouldn't you have to be programmed to think even deeper? Then again, I mean this is Rick who made that butter-bot, so essentially I guess it doesn't matter. Kudos to Rick & his everlasting intelligence!
JetNinja96 We have a butter passing robot who is 1 self aware, and 2 able to question its purpose, I think if anything the robot would have figured all this out even if Rick lied to the robot. The robot was made to pass butter yet had the intelligence to be self aware, question its purpose, and so on....so if I was said butter passing robot questioning my purpose in the few first mins of my life, I think I would think deeper as time goes on. Rick didnt have to make the butter bot think about its purpose or be self aware yet he did, that robot would have figured out the truth even if it was lied to.
Mr. Clippy this is late but I think it's that we don't have a purpose but this is good because we don't have to mentally hurt ourselves to achieve and accomplish something we can just live life whether it's just sitting in a room all day playing video games or becoming a multimillionaire because in the end it won't matter
I trigger people for fun How do you know it won't matter in the end? You don't know what will happen after death. Everyone wants to be so philosophical nowadays. All of this is just sophomoric/misanthropic babble 😒
The guy just created a tiny, sentient, robotic life form out of a go-pro camera and some spare parts, and his first and only command to it is... pass the butter. A hilarious and sad use of Rick's skills.
Human: What is my purpose? God: Go eat, shit, and have sex. *1 minute later* Human: What is my purpose? God: You eat, shit, and have sex. Human: ...Oh my god. God: Yeah welcome to the club pal.
+kylezaking it's almost like you missed the point of the "welcome to the club" remark, or else you just thought everyone else was that dumb and you felt the need to spell things out. I'm gonna go with the first.
Jeremy Thane I know Rick suffers from existential depression, I was just making a joke about the joke in this scene. You're taking my comment too seriously.
I have an alternate theory about why Rick created this robot - it's likely that he knew that Morty's science fair project was coming up, and part of his purpose for creating it (aside from getting an opportunity to use the poor little robot as a target for putdowns) was so Morty would have something to turn in for an easy A. He was just being passive-aggressive about it - and besides, he needs Morty to get good grades for his own purposes.
dark7element i feel like rick just wanted his butter... in the long run, rick cares about his family, but rick is still rick. He is still selfish and self-absorbed. If rick even knew Morty had a science fair, he would have just passively told Morty not to do it and then got back to doing whatever it is he was doing, possibly building a robot to pass salt to him.
I'll always come back to this scene just to smile at the idea of Rick finding it easier to create life from nothing and curse it with the sentience to dread its own existence rather than reaching over two feet to grab it himself.
Rick put time and effort into creating a robot that lives for only one purpose. Once that one purpose is fulfilled the robot realizes how his life is wasted and how he will never do anything else Now apply that to real life with a child going to school to eventually get a job
life is only dull and meaningfulness if you let it. you dont have to do any of those things to have a purpose. just do what you love and follow that. life wont be empty.
@@0116x doing what you love isnt going yo put food on the table. school and jobs are mandatory and you are rich if you think otherwise. fuck off with that.

I think it'd be more interesting if he breaks Rick out of his own free will, and breaks through the barriers of what his defined "purpose" was to forge ahead and make his own future! :D
Why did he give it full artificial intelligence and self awareness? That's just mean 😂
Life and Gaming I think It's sort of his sort of philosofical art, he believes that exsistance is pain and misery loves company, a self aware butterbot is the result
Life and Gaming how is it mean if it's just a robot. It can act self aware and we can perceive that it does. Doesn't mean it is.
alejandro cano. How many toasters do you know that have a perception of God and a longing to no of its powers. Rick made it artificially intelligent for no other reason to have someone share his futility of life.
It's kinda funny though, because later he tried to get the thing to hang out with him and the bot was like; I pass butter.
i think thats the irony we are no different than that robot. thats why he says welcome to the club
What’s even more funny is that Rick didn’t need to make the robot have self awareness, but he did anyways to be an ass
Thanks for explaining the joke.
My take is that he didn't program the robot to pass the butter because it's so beneath him (simple programing? - ach!) and made it sentient instead. But yeah, Rick doesn't even give a hoot for the misery the robots life has now become.

Most ppl think that if you truly believe that you are your own god, you have no limits and control, and you can do whatever you want, and commit the most heinous of crimes - as you said it as well - because they would think and act that way in that situation
In this case only fear (of god) is keeping them away of doing heinous of crimes
But the true is - my true, ofc, as I see it - if you see god inside, rather than (only) outside, you take over the responsibility as well
If you think about it, its always self control anyway, no matter who is your god
If you project a god into the outside world, and dont do things because of Him, in the end you are to one who wont do those things -> self control
I believe there is a level, where you are free, there is no god to punish you, there's no karma which would bring back all the bad things to us, and we still wont do nothing harmful, not because of god, not because of karma, but because its not the right thing to do
It'll take 2-3 days for Jerry and Morty to finish that project.....

He was working on the Robot right when the video started. What are you talking about?
Sonichackedyou I was obviously over exaggerating a bit. But my point still goes as followed.
Human; What is my purpose
God: You fuck and make more of your selves, then you die.
There a philosophical theory (can't remember the name) where most people are just animals most of the time, that the only time you are truly sentient is when you override impulse and make a purely rational decision on a goal and purpose of your own creation, and then you got back to being a beast, eating, sleeping and fucking as impulse dictates.
frbe0101 Isn't that the speech Dr. Breen gave in Half Life 2?
That robot has a new purpose alright, and that's being a backbling.

A bit of extra work in the short term in exchange for the long term benefit of never having to fetch the butter from that day onward :D

The purpose isn't to have a long term benefit, it is to avoid the social interaction needed to ask another human to "pass the butter"

Always wondered why Rick says "welcome to the club" to the robot. Then I realized the similarity between Rick's situation and the robot's situation. The robot has so much potential but is only made to pass butter, while Rick is capable of so much more but has to drive Summer to work or help Morty do science project.

2wingo he would rather create a sentient being that hates its existence to pass butter than actually just grab the butter...
"What is my purpose"

well the objective evolutionary meaning of life is to reproduce.
Everything else about life just indirectly helps that goal, or it wouldn't exist

+kylezaking Not a bad purpose, really. Hell, some of us are still not at the "have sex" part yet.
+kylezaking Didn't see those comas at first LOL
When Rick says "Thank you", he's in a REALY good mood.
Rick put time and effort into creating a robot that lives for only one purpose. Once that one purpose is fulfilled the robot realizes how his life is wasted and how he will never do anything else
Now apply that to real life with a child going to school to eventually get a job
'oh my god'
