What Happens When You Crush A Vacuum Chamber With A Hydraulic Press While Under Vacuum?

- In this video I crush a glass vacuum chamber while it is under vacuum in the hydraulic press. This video is to test out what happens when a glass vacuum chamber breaks. Because of the pressure difference the air rushes in at supersonic speeds accelerating the glass shards. So the glass first implodes but then the pieces hit together causing on explosion! I also film it in slow motion which gives a really neat slow motion glass implosion/explosion. It is really cool to see the marshmallows instantly become crushed by the weight of the atmosphere after the glass breaks.

Hi! As always, I really like your experiments!
Here's a suggestion : it could be very interesting to design something that would allow you to crush things in an very strong container, like a bullet-proof glass box. And it would be designed so that the object being crushed could not "escape" from under the press, thus ending up being more and more compacted. We could then see what and object would look like when it's very dense. We could also see something like a ratio of compaction for an object. Say you fill this container with marshmallow and compact it with the press, we could see what very dense marshmallow looks like and what volume it takes in the container once compacted. It would be awsome to try again many of you other crush experiments, like candy bars, ooblek, aerogel, ice, peanuts, starburst, pearls.......
Why don't marshmallow companies make the plastic bags that they sell the marshmallows in a vacuum chamber so that the marshmallows appear bigger in the package when people look at them?

Cover the jar opening with a layer of thin plastic foil. Turn the vacuum on, until it will pop making a small "boom" sound. Then try more layers :)
Also check how murshmallow-raisins taste (if they can be clean in the chamber), compare size with normal murshmallows

Slow mo was really cool. You probably would have gotten the same results even without vacuum in the chamber. You have got to get a less wimpy vacuum pump. Yours seems to be able to get down to 100 mbar abs at best, There are other small portable units that can het you down to 10 mbar or even 1 mbar abs. You'll be able to boil a lot more water based stuff, and even freeze (below 6 mbar abs).

If you crush an item in a vacuum chamber with a hydraulic press, can you super compress it? Because when a container is airtight and you hydraulic press something inside then the container breaks cause the air has no where to go but if it is a vacuum chamber and it constantly reduces the air pressure building up then you could super compress something couldn't you?

The reason we didn’t see an „implosion“ is because air particles are to small to be seen by the human eye(without light refraction of course) so the air particles around the vacuum imploded, but the glass exploded due to how fast the air particles replaced the volume of the area the glass took up.

It exploded more than I thought it would. Was expecting a singularity type implosion but then I guess all that material still has momentum and results in what we perceive as an explosion.
I like how in the slo mo the bottom has a sticker that says Fragile as it's spinning through the air in slo mo.

explosion not an implosion, soon as a slightest crack or hole appears the rush of air cause it to explode it over compensates to replace and equal the pressure. the press caused the crack or hole causing the explosion. if it was just a regular jar it would not have been so catastrophic.
