I'm love the vacuum idea with the sock at the end to clean the sump! great to meet u at the reef n reptile show! hoped you liked my corian frag tank lol
I sat through the whole video. And I gotta say I actually enjoy the longer videos. I love the part about cleaning out the sump. I never thought about filtering the water through a sock. now I just gotta get me one of those Cobalt pumps
Finally got around to watching this (sorry, baby has been cutting into my relaxing viewing moments). And all I can say is wow, I need to get me one of those inline pumps. I would do the same thing to clean but it usually involves me making a siphon to a bucket, and then pouring the content back in which always gets messy. Thanks for the advice, better than gold!
This was so interesting to watch, I had never seen your tank without corals 😎😉 What a cool memory to have and use as a point of reference to how far you've come. I hope I find one of those brown sea fans one day, I absolutely love that coral.
Hippo Tang!!! Just learnt something new i always knew of them as Regal Tang I've had 3 of them in the last 10 years and never knew this! Awesome tanks, thanks for sharing
Really great video and update! I do a DIY version of your inline pump for sump cleaning that I posted a video about last week or so. I wish I knew they made those passthrough pumps. That cobalt pump makes it look so easy. Def going to be ordering one. Thanks for sharing!
Man, sweet looking tank. Hope mine comes out half that good. I finally have salt in and I am about 3/4 of the way through the cycle. Pretty pumped! Thanks for the vids, love the info.
Holey moley your reef is incredibly stunning! Can't believe I have been subscribed but don't remember watching your videos. I dream of a tank like that with such huge thriving corals and a clownfish harem! (p.s thanks for replying on the facebook group!)
Hey Melev's Reef. The tank looks amazing! I just wanted to comment that I have a Melanarus wrasse that doesn't even notice my fire shrimp in my 75g. I also had a six line in with a harlequin shrimp and never had any issue with them either. You may be able to get away with a shrimp or two if yours is well fed (which it looks like he is) Half dozen peppermint shrimp will take care of all your aptasia anemones. There's no need to use chemical treatment
Happy 3 year anniversary. Your tanks and channel have been a source of education and inspiration for me since you started. Education in that I have learned many ways to successfully build a reef tank, although no where as good as you, and keep it growing. You inspired me to start documenting my tank and eventually building a up and coming channel. Maybe one day I could talk to you about how to keep an anemone thriving and growing as well as yours...lol.. See you tomorrow at the show and look forward to your discussion. Continued success..
Hi Scott. Thanks! I have a full video about BTA Care that goes into exactly what you asked. Happy reefing, and good luck with your future channel. ruclips.net/video/iXIh24pfsps/видео.html
I want to see a video done on what got you into the hobby, how you started, what tanks you had along with photos, and just a summarization on how much you've contributed to this hobby.
Congratulations!!! and thank you so much for sharing your whole journey with us!!!! I have two questions: 1. what do you feed your long polyp grogonian or what is the best way to have success with them? 2. what do you do to have the best success with your Seba anemone? I have problems with them thank you Mark Oh! about the Aiptasia....what happened to your zapper??!!
This gorgonian doesn't need direct feeding. The Sebae anemone is being fed by the clownfish, and seems to like the spot being hit by metal halide lighting. I haven't used it in a while. I need to recharge the batteries and use it.
Great videos! I am upgrading tanks and wonder if you have ever created a custom hole for an anemone foot? Can you trick them by making it perfect for them? What do they like?
Gorgeous tank. I have a question - why do saltwater and particularly reef tanks seem to be able to support a much greater bioload than freshwater? Reef tanks often seem load with not just fish, but dozens or even hundreds of snails, stars, crabs, corals, sponges, anemones, shrimp etc etc while even a well planted freshwater tank typically only supports a few fish by comparison.
Those are automated by the Apex controller. I can check the logs to be sure. It may be 3x a day, during the late night hours... maybe less this time of year.
cleaning between the baffles with that little pump is a huge benefit! well done... Any reason you haven't went with ULR Phosphorus Hanna Checker? I use it on my tank and it is very accurate reading my phosphate levels.. with a tank this nice it would be a great secondary test to make sure your good. keep doing what you do.. Be Easy!
I bought one but as you probably know it's usually as accurate as the reagents. And I had a bad experience with mine. Just didn't expect the kit I was using to be wrong, that's all.
So after watching many videos and looking at many forum posts I've found that your 60g cube is my favorite tank I've seen the first time I seen it was in your 1 year video and I was shocked at the long flowing tentacles and thought that was the coolest thing ever I really hope one day I can replicate something like that! Other than the stinging tentacles is it fairly difficult to reach into that tank and work on it?
Beautiful tank and a great inspiration. Do you suggest using dead rock or live rock to start up a reef tank. If using live rock do you have preferred online retailer you get your live rock from.
I prefer live rock, and when possible pick it out at the LFS. Another way that saves money is to ask the LFS to add a few (you decide) cases of LR to their order. Usually a case holds about 45 lbs of live rock. When it arrives, you pick up your boxes sight-unseen -- they never open the boxes, they don't put them in water, nothing. That's why they might be willing to pass along some savings to you. Lastly, you can purchase used live rock from hobbyists leaving the hobby and clean those up by "cooking" the liverock for a few months in a darkened barrel of saltwater. Cooking liverock has nothing to do with heat, it's a description for having them simmer in the background. You can google it. I may do a write up or video about the process, which is relatively simple and primarily needs time to be effective.
Love your setup. What do you think of dark sandbeds like your frag tank or dark bare bottom tanks? The dark bottom makes corals pop so well but goes away from the natural look.
I prefer lighter sand. The stuff in my frag system is bigger grade, quite similar to crushed coral, and crushed coral traps detritus. I may end up pulling that and using finer sand both for the look and for the reflective quality it affords to send light back up to the corals from beneath.
Looks great brother and congrats on 3 years! Since you're running biopellets, it seems very odd to me that your NO3 would be less than 1ppm but your PO4 higher than 1ppm... might want to cross check that new elos kit!! I'm betting your expired kit was closer to the real number. And like you said, corals don't normally drop dead from high PO4... maybe brown out, but not bleach.
I love the idea to remove detritus from the sump! I'm going to use that technique By the way, what's your method of cleaning filter socks? By hand, wash machine, dishwasher, bleach in wash machine? Thanks.
Primarily, blasting them with a garden hose with a jet-like nozzle outside on concrete. I turn them inside out and clean off all the brown as best I can, then invert them right side out and do it again. I've also soaked them in bleach water, then rinsed them thoroughly, and finally soaked them in tap water with Prime to help remove any ammonia. They are always left to hang dry for 24 hours before being used again.
Awsome update. Spock is huge in the extra footage at the end Spock makes your tank look smaller than it really is cuz she is just huge. I love the anemone in the large tank as much as I love my rbta I would trade em for one really nice big anemone that doesn't like to move all the time. It also seems like the frag tank is evolving into another display lol.
always good to review where your tank is today and then throwback in time to when it all started, nice one like the video With regards to wrasse I have a 100g tank with 5 cleaner shrimp, 2 blood shrimp & 2 peppermint shrimp and they have been living alongside a peacock wrasse for past 2 years and a silver belly wrasse for past 6 months. All seem happy together an no fighting and certainly no eating of shrimp. Is it certain wrasse that go for shrimps or is it all of them, maybe I have been lucky? Paul
I'm going to have to look up both of your types of wrasses to see if that's why you've been so lucky thus far. The Mystery wrasse may have been the devourer of shrimp and crabs in my reef.
i think your right as I have read via live aquaria that when adult they can take a liking to small ornamental shrimp. I thought so as I was looking to buy one from a fellow reefer and knew there was a reason.
ha, I do the same thing with filter socks to clean stuff without wasting water. If I'm doing a water change, I'll use a wet/dry shop vac to suck out the sump bottom
That coral died before I knew I had elevated PO4, but I was too sick to do anything at the time. When I did my measurements finally, it was already gone.
I have the same wrasse you have melnarius wrasse and I have 6 cleaner shrimp 1 coral banded lots of starfish and snail had him for 6 months and he never touched them
This may be a dumb question, but I'm a newby when it comes to aquariums. Do the fish get sad/depressed being in a tank all day? No offense, but I see the big blue fish (again, newby) just swimming in circles and I feel bad for him, but only because idk if they get sad being in a tank all day. I want to jump into this hobby, but before I do I wanna know that they'll be happy in a tank
If the fish stays in a corner non-stop, odds are it isn't content. But most fish are actively searching for things to nibble on, and interacting with their tank mates. I don't mean to project human emotions in them, but there are times I act like they are able to understand me. It's kinda silly, but they are my pets. :) I've had some of these fish since 2004.
About every three months. When it starts looking bad, or I get motivated to wipe everything down, that's usually about when I tackle it. I just worked on both sumps last night, in fact. :)
I haven't tried Nyos yet. I'm using Elos for my water testing. The surprise for me was to find out my older Salifert kit was reporting incorrectly but I made the mistake of using it despite age -- it wasn't empty yet and I hate to waste anything. Since it did show me PO4 as well as less PO4 after dosing Phosphate Rx, I didn't have a reason to doubt its veracity. By comparison, the Hanna Checker gave me misleading readings, and I never used it again. I have a blog about it here, and be sure to read my comments beneath the main writeup: www.reefaddicts.com/entry.php/28965-Well-this-is-a-little-embarrassing
Tried emailing you about a shirt on your website. Really want the clown fish shirt in a 3xl. Anyway I can order it in that size? Thanks!! It's the face/tail shirt
melevsreef my email is brahnanlovell@outlook.com, my PayPal is the same email if you want to send me an invoice for the shirt. 3xl with the clown face/ tail shirt. Hope your trip is well!
Huh. I didn't know you couldn't put cleaner shrimp with wrasses. I've got a skunk cleaner shrimp with my melanurus wrasse, and they are both doing good.
Some ornamental shrimp become snacks for certain wrasses. I may be erring on the side of caution, because I'd prefer not to learn it the hard way with my own beastly melanurus. ;)
I'm love the vacuum idea with the sock at the end to clean the sump! great to meet u at the reef n reptile show! hoped you liked my corian frag tank lol
I did! Congrats on no drips. :)
This guy has such a nice personality, a pleasure to listen to.
Thank you. :)
I sat through the whole video. And I gotta say I actually enjoy the longer videos. I love the part about cleaning out the sump. I never thought about filtering the water through a sock. now I just gotta get me one of those Cobalt pumps
your videos make me so excited to finish my redsea setup and also give me so many great ideas to try!!
Very nice!! Thanks for all your hard work, I get to see your great tank with none of the work :)
lol
Finally got around to watching this (sorry, baby has been cutting into my relaxing viewing moments). And all I can say is wow, I need to get me one of those inline pumps. I would do the same thing to clean but it usually involves me making a siphon to a bucket, and then pouring the content back in which always gets messy. Thanks for the advice, better than gold!
It looks great Mark. Well done.
You are an inspiration to all of the us.
This is a great way to clean the sump! Great video overall. I can't wait to start my anemone tank!
This was so interesting to watch, I had never seen your tank without corals 😎😉
What a cool memory to have and use as a point of reference to how far you've come.
I hope I find one of those brown sea fans one day, I absolutely love that coral.
Your awesome, great look back on three years.
Great job on 3 years! Funny, when your at the anemone tank, the fish shirt your wearing, the reflection looks like the fish is eating off of the rock
I'll have to rewatch that part. :)
Grats on the 3 years, the tanks are looking amazing!!
Happy birthday 2 u, Happy birthday 2 u.... Great job, videos and information buddy. keep em coming and congrats on the 3 year birthday!
love being a special kind of subscriber.
Such a beautiful tank. Just outstanding! 😄
Gorgeous tank and congratulations on your 3 years! I'm coming up in 2 years for mine
Great update Marc. Congrats on three years.
Hi Mel... great video.. stunning tanks!!!
One of the best updates!
Thanks!
congratulations! tanks are looking better than ever :)
love your videos and tanks! happy anniversary lol. thanks for the videos, very informative.
oh and yes I did watch til the last frame 😇
I find this very educational though I don't take care of these kind of pets. Very intriguing to watch. You earned a sub
Thanks!
great idea to clean out the sump!! love the vids. can't wait to have a reef as big and nice as yours!

great video everything looks great love your tank

Those sea anemones rocked.
Brilliant idea with the sump vacuum
thanks for the idea on a pump to clean the sump. I've been looking for something like that.
This tank is so satisfying wow! Just marine reef tank goals
I might have to get one of those pass through pumps if my manifold siphon system doesn't work out. Great idea!
Man, sweet looking tank. Hope mine comes out half that good. I finally have salt in and I am about 3/4 of the way through the cycle. Pretty pumped! Thanks for the vids, love the info.

You've got a bunch to pick from now, so binge-watch my channel. ;)
Another great video! Thanks

awesome work reef bro
I want to see a video done on what got you into the hobby, how you started, what tanks you had along with photos, and just a summarization on how much you've contributed to this hobby.
Funny you should say that. I'm planning on that particular video, but it'll be in two years for my 20th anniversary in the hobby.
melevsreef that's awesome! I've been it for about 10 a little over.
Congratulations!!! and thank you so much for sharing your whole journey with us!!!! I have two questions:
1. what do you feed your long polyp grogonian or what is the best way to have success with them?

Very cool man! I love the throw back video.
I just saw your inserting the clowns into the anemone and then I watched this and WOW they've grown a lot, both the anemone and the clowns.
Same reaction here.
amazing set-up! and yes i was one of those that watched the whole video ;)
Thanks, I appreciate that. :)
Great cleaning tips! thanks!
awesome voice over.
LOVE YOUR TANK, SETTING UP MY FIRST REEF TANK WOULD LOVE YOUR INPUT TO LET ME KNOW IF AM DOING ANYTHING WRONG..
So ya, eating soup while I watched. Description of dead fish was very descriptive. Soup not so good now. Haha. Thanks for the update!
+Kristin Rousseau 😂😇😝
brilliant video . what is the tang with the white tail please
First video I saw from you seems like you're doing a good job 👍😀
Welcome aboard! :)
Great videos! I am upgrading tanks and wonder if you have ever created a custom hole for an anemone foot? Can you trick them by making it perfect for them? What do they like?
Beautiful Tank
Great looking reeftank!!! How often you do your water change?
It's been a long time, actually. I hope to do one in December. ;)
The fish are usually the main bioload. Invertebrates and corals don't have nearly the impact on water quality.
Looks the bomb - how often do you feed the main tank and how and what with
+Thomas Coleman There is a feeding video where I describe all of that. Auto feeders during the daytime and Rod's frozen fare every night.
Perfect just watched it!
You have such an amazing tank , how much does a set up like that cost .
Looks great. I see you are running heaters how often do they turn on?
Those are automated by the Apex controller. I can check the logs to be sure. It may be 3x a day, during the late night hours... maybe less this time of year.
I found mine on most of the day so I switched to a closed loop. You must be in a warm climate. Thanks for sharing.

congratulations ,how u maintained clear water in ur tank
missed your videos!
I was sick for week or so. Had to recover first. :)
u can add a solon wrass they look amazing they are always out and i have never had one mess with anything

muy bonito tanque se ve buena vida marina saludos
Awesome 👍
Enjoyed it!
Congratulations!! Qué sal utiliza???? Suscrito! Excusme. From México.
Hey have you tried peppermint shrimps?
Awsome update. Spock is huge in the extra footage at the end Spock makes your tank look smaller than it really is cuz she is just huge. I love the anemone in the large tank as much as I love my rbta I would trade em for one really nice big anemone that doesn't like to move all the time. Spock does throw off the sense of scale, and when I stand near the tank I don't know if that helps - or not. ;)
I'll be starting a 150g soon and I'd like to hear your take on DSB/plenums or 1-2" sand beds. Your bed looks healthy, any opinion?
always good to review where your tank is today and then throwback in time to when it all started, nice one like the video
With regards to wrasse I have a 100g tank with 5 cleaner shrimp, 2 blood shrimp & 2 peppermint shrimp and they have been living alongside a peacock wrasse for past 2 years and a silver belly wrasse for past 6 months. All seem happy together an no fighting and certainly no eating of shrimp. Is it certain wrasse that go for shrimps or is it all of them, maybe I have been lucky? Paul

So nice!
I have a Christmas wrasse in my reef tank. Also, I have three blood red fire shrimp and a banded coral shrimp. The wrasse never bothers the shrimp.
I use a cheap shop vac for my sump, and use that cleaning as a water change!!
ha, I do the same thing with filter socks to clean stuff without wasting water. If I'm doing a water change, I'll use a wet/dry shop vac to suck out the sump bottom
What kind of crush corals did you use on your main tank ? It looks like big pieces....
My 400g reef uses Tropic Eden Reef Flakes. See the pictures up close here: www.melevsreef.com/node/1637
Naso lituratus is fantastic and friendly.
Now it’s your eight year anniversary
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/QOYGnm-xd_k/видео.html
Hi Mark as I have experienced lowering phosphate to quickly can cause sps to bleach. That might be the reason you had bleaching.
That coral died before I knew I had elevated PO4, but I was too sick to do anything at the time. When I did my measurements finally, it was already gone.
Also what is your smallest fish?
I have the same wrasse you have melnarius wrasse and I have 6 cleaner shrimp 1 coral banded lots of starfish and snail had him for 6 months and he never touched them
Wow, that's amazing. Do you feed him meaty foods?
once a week
Are you going to do the challenge? Than from Tidal Gardens put it out to you. Hope you do. Cheers man!
Sure I will. Thanks for the heads up. :p
+melevsreef no probs - look forward to your responses.
This may be a dumb question, but I'm a newby when it comes to aquariums. Do the fish get sad/depressed being in a tank all day? I don't mean to project human emotions in them, but there are times I act like they are able to understand me. It's kinda silly, but they are my pets. :)
I've had some of these fish since 2004.
Do the pink skunk clowns get more orange as they grow? Or is it the light.
These are Tangerine Skunks, not pink skunks.
Oh okay, they look awesome, i really want a few but where I live I can't find them. How much did the first captive bred yellow tangs cost?
$100 each.
How often do you clean the sump ?
About every three months. When it starts looking bad, or I get motivated to wipe everything down, that's usually about when I tackle it. I just worked on both sumps last night, in fact. :)
Hey mark, just curious why you use nyos test kit for phosphate over the Hanna checker ULR
I haven't tried Nyos yet. I'm using Elos for my water testing. The surprise for me was to find out my older Salifert kit was reporting incorrectly but I made the mistake of using it despite age -- it wasn't empty yet and I hate to waste anything. melevsreef thanks Marc! Do you use the regular elos or the professional po4 test kit?
It's the regular one, which is perfect for my needs as you can tell. Keeping it that close to 0 isn't typical for my reef.
Tried emailing you about a shirt on your website. Really want the clown fish shirt in a 3xl. Anyway I can order it in that size? Thanks!! It's the face/tail shirt
I think so, let me get back to you. I"m still in New Jersey at the moment, after visiting Manhattan this evening. :)
melevsreef my email is brahnanlovell@outlook.com, my PayPal is the same email if you want to send me an invoice for the shirt. 3xl with the clown face/ tail shirt. Hope your trip is well!

+melevsreef which has dimensions of this cube and how much clownfish swims? :)
The cube is 24" x 24" x 24". It's a 60g aquarium made of glass.
Mel, Name of large white anemone thats housing skunk clowns please
It's a Sebae anemone. Heteractis malu
sir, what is the tank dimension ? how long is the tank, plz tell me,i want that tank for my little naso
