I pulled both seats from my E39, heated up metal end cap and slid if off the cable...cut the sheathing back about 1/4 inches on average, heated up metal end cap again and pushed it back on the cable, welding it back together. Did this for all 8 cables (4 on each seat) so I didn't have to worry about having to do this job again. Yes, it was a pain in the ass and took about 5 hours for both. Yes, having a helper is a must...beer is cheap.
One of my friends was such an idiot. When my E39 ///M5 had the seat twist he said "I think that is a special feature so you can talk to the passengers when it twists". Door knob he was.
I just did this repair. What a pain in the ass. It never fails. Some of the DIY videos say that this may take you about an hour to do. About an hour? What universe are you guys living in? About an hour for the job? The truth for me was that one of the screws holding in the bracket took me about an hour. And that is with an open end 8 mm. Each stroke turned the screw about 1 degree. Then I had to flip the wrench and get one more degree. Anyway, at least for me, if the videos say it will take an hour, it will take me about 10 hours. One of the reasons I had so much trouble was probably because of the position of the seats. In some positions, the screws are much easier to get at than others. But you may not have any choices about the position the seat is in when you work on it. It all depends on the nature of your failure. Anyway, patience is your friend if you are man enough to take on this repair. I also suggest that you hide all the children when doing this little exercise lest they learn some words that mommy will not be happy about.
Oh man I don’t have a M but I have a 530i that’s pretty much like the M but when you said “when you fix the driver side you realize the passenger does the same” I felt that
If you're just splicing the cable sleeve is it possible to simply splice it while it's still connected to the motor and tape/glue it without taking it out of the motor at all?
bro when you leaned urself back in the passenger seat i lost it 😂 having this problem right now with my 2002 toyota solara. but it’s the forward and backward twist. going to try and fix it tomorrow . wish me luck
E38 Sport Comfort seats are a plug-n-play swap (if the seats come from a later model E38, so the wiring is different). Is the passenger seat more comfortable than the driver's seat? If so, the seat foam may be collapsed. New foam is not terribly expensive.
If your back is hurting while driving adjust the seat in a higher position it allows your feet to sit firmly. Another suggestion is extend the power thigh position so it provides support near the back of your leg.
The airbag light comes on because the seat has a built-in "pretensioner" explosive charge that snugs the seatbelts down on you in an accident. It works by explosively yanking down the buckle on a thick cable. I've used BMW Scanner 1.4 to great success in the past.
My 2003 540 had the same issue with my driver seat. I took it to a shop that specializes in BMWs. They got the seat fixed but I now have the airbag light on. They tried resetting it but the light is still on. I told them that they can have a longer look at it when they do my valve cover gasket replacement next year.
I’m not real clear on the exact location of your pain, however my own longtime lower back pain always stems from inadequate lumbar support. I bought this in line. I have NO financial benefit from this product. Love it. LoveHome Memory Foam Lumbar Support Back Cushion With 3D Mesh Cover Balanced Firmness Designed for Lower Back Pain Relief- Ideal Back Pillow for Computer/Office Chair, Car Seat, Recliner etc. - Black Amazon. BTW...I never use the strap. I get into the car, adjust the cushion to where it is comfy then lean back and connect my seat belt. I no longer move the seat at all, just this portable cushion. After Using mine for about three years, it has barely compressed at all.
How come evety video about crocked seat is about bmw? I have a 94 Mitsubishi Galant with manual seat and the right side of the drivers seat is 2-3 inch further back than the left
Interestingly enough I have a passenger seat that is permanently slightly twisted. Both sides move as they should but the back is slightly cocked, maybe one side slipped or something or someone tried to fix it but made a mistake
Weird, I didn’t get a light when I fixed my seat. Also you don’t need to have the key in the car to move the seat. You can remove the key and the seats will still move. And I also I had an issue with the comfort as well.
I found that with the door open for an extended period of time, the car disengaged the electronics so I had to put the key in once to get it to move, then it was fine.
Good info!.. and yes, e39 M5 seats aren’t comfy AT ALL.. it’s Not just you. We all just have to admit confess and admit it and get another therapy session for what’s wrong with our E39 obsession... this, another kink in the Armor.
I replied to your other vid, you need to try seats from 540 or from E38, they will go straight in. Maybe try the local BMW club for guys that might let you go for a quick drive
Too ruff on the trim pieces and you do not have to remove the side cover. Move the seat all the way forward and all the way lifted up before you remove the wire harness. See my video on how to do this without cutting anything at all.
Instead of the glue and duct tape, run down to your local auto parts store and buy some fuel hose that will just barely slide over the whole thing, and secure it in place with two small hose clamps. That way, it's easily removable should it ever be a problem again.
Goddammit BMW BMW should bankrupt they deserve it because they make it too many people suffering and lost a lot of money deliberately and when you gonna realize this is already will be late........Goddammit BMW........ Nice video and Good job, it was very interesting. Thank you ////////////////////

Just bought a 530i Touring M-Sport and yes, both front seats has a twist :D Will make a try, wish me luck, not a mechanic but a composer..
OMG....I am so thankful to have found your channel...I blamed my dad for breaking my seat.
Lol it's still his fault
So cool that you tackle these jobs on your own.
Oh man I don’t have a M but I have a 530i that’s pretty much like the M but when you said “when you fix the driver side you realize the passenger does the same” I felt that
Your videos are extremely well thought out and made! Nice job!

Yes it is.
My driver and passenger seat had this issue as well, We've fixed them but I'm hesitating to play with the controls now. :)
I have a 2003 525i and i just ran into this problem. I'm going to try and fix it myself, thank you for this video and i hope i can do it. 🤞

What's up with all the BMWs with twisted seats

You have to show us the gash on the steering wheel.
friday I need to take a long trip and tomorrow I need to fix this issue also .... I hope I can finish it in 6 hours ....

I would look into getting the foam replaced. That’s takes a beating over time.
Do I have to disconnect the battery before removing the seat harness?
Davian Sandoval nope
It’s recommended - if you turn your ignition on without the connector, you will trigger an airbag error code.

Thank you. Your video is very helpful.
Sport contour seats maybe a better choice! Has even more options than the standard sport seat!
I replied to your other vid, you need to try seats from 540 or from E38, they will go straight in. Maybe try the local BMW club for guys that might let you go for a quick drive
Not a bad idea I’ll have to check one out!
Coffee and car things ☕ good morning
Thank you from germany. I have to do this next days too on passanger seat. Thank you soooo much for you diy. Greetings.
Glad to help!
Brandon.... you should be the next 50's kid (e46 DIY everything guy) but with the e39 M5. So many people are buying these we need a DIY video source!
Haha I’m just glad my info is helpful for others!
Did this too but didn't need to remove the seat. Took 15 min
How
Merci pour les infos, ca m'a bien aidé !!

You could get 7 series seats
You ever heard of e39source ?
yup!
What watch Brandon?
MK46 looks to be a Tudor of some sort according to the clasp on the bracelet.
Thx man!

that's a good idea. The options I saw online didn't seem very convincing so I just went with something I figured would work.

Pov: your a E92 M3
never cut and glue the cable,. it's the worst thing you can do,..
You don’t cut the wire your burn the wire 🙄
Why can’t a German master engineers make a damn seat if that works and lasts😂😂😂?
Sell both cars and buy an f80 zcp, that’ll solve all your probs
but then I would have a single car that sounds like a lawnmower
Ouch, right in the feels. Mpe sorts the sound as best it can, but yes without a v8 in my garage, I’d be struggling with the f80 sound too
I've just been spoiled with V8s!
Goddammit BMW

Nice video and Good job, it was very interesting. Thank you ////////////////////
Stop pointing your finger please, I've found it so annoying.
He likes fingering. Might be a quirk.
Or he probably hasn’t been taught pointing is rude.
Your are not a car men 😂😂🤣😂
What a crap seat design...LOL
