  • Adrienne Stein is an award winning American artist living and working in Pennsylvania and Colorado. She holds an MFA from Boston University and a BFA Magna Cum Laude, from Laguna College of Art & Design. Adrienne studied under many gifted and influential instructors throughout the United States, France, and Italy.
Her paintings celebrate the natural world through bold, vibrant color. The lush magical environments and figures she depicts form the nexus between reality and fantasy, expressed through a world of symbolic imagery. Direct observation of nature coalesces with memory, imagination, art history, folklore, archetypes, and natural elements that are fueled by a sense of personal as well as universal myth. Adrienne is inspired by her travel experiences as well as the beauty of her garden surrounding the Pennsylvania home she shares with her husband, the artist Quang Ho and their son, Liam.
She has received numerous awards from organizations such as The Portrait Society of America, The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, The California Art Club, and The Art Renewal Center. Her work is collected in the U.S. and abroad.

I love her response to critics during grad school - not reacting, but going deeper into what her work meant to her. And lol at 37:32 - "I'm not prolific, I'm just older than you!"

When did universities become the thought police? I am glad you went along and did your own thing. Your work is STUNNING.

I've listened to this podcast a few times while painting and am truly inspired by Adrienne's story. It is eye-opening how many people like Adrienne had the same experience I had in graduate school. I also enjoy Jeff and how he interviews Adrienne and all the contemporary realist painters. Adrienne's paintings have some of the most incredible color experiences. Thank you for making this podcast and also opening up my eyes to Adrienne's art and thoughts as a female artist.

Very cool interview. Her positivity and ability to take a challenging situation and find the good, and not only find the good but still be humble to learn something is amazing. Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is challenging and she made me think twice about my own experiences and try to find the good.

Amazing! What a fantastic interview with an interesting, talented, and beautiful artist. I was already familiar with her (also amazing) husband but I am blown away by Adrienne's paintings. I feel like she has painted with the chroma I've only seen in my dreams. So glad you interviewed her Jeff. Well done.

Wonderful interview!! I really appreciate Adrienne sharing her experiences, (especially the MFA critique and how she came out feeling battered, but a better artist because of it) and the information on her color palette! Her bold use of vibrant color is beautiful and inspiring! Thank you both 🙏💕

Great podcast! I think it is important to dig what is underneath the surface of the artist and the length of the interview allows the time to explore. I too have the atelier training and continue to work on busting out of the “rules” it instills. All are good but don’t make up the painting. The artist experience goes into shaping the painting with the training as tools. I enjoy your interviews! Thank you!

This is a great interview, but I enjoy all the interviews that Jeff does. I was interested in what Adrienne had to say about Boston University. I am older than Adrienne and I went to Boston university school of fine arts in the late 1970s. I actually met Philip Guston back then and talked with him, because he was kind of an honorary professor at BU. I was there as an undergraduate. Other than Guston, I liked BU at that time because they had a more classical figurative approach to art education. Not exactly the Florence Academy, but similar. The mainstream "fine art" world in the 70's was all about abstraction and abstract expressionism, etc. So, rather than abstract art being rebellious, it seemed to me that everyone was doing it, so what was the point? I was interested in art because I was interested in drawing and painting, and not interested in the deconstructing and reinventing what a painting is supposed to be. I heard many people back then saying that they went to art school and they never learned to draw or paint. I didn't want to be one of those people. I can look at the work of someone like Cy Twombly, but I'm not that interested. The art world has moved onto more figurative work with Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville, Eric Fishl, John Currin..... on and on. BU was considered behind the times in the 1970s teaching figurative painting, and they seem to have moved on to more abstract work just as figurative work was making a resurgence in the art world. Anyway, I love Adrienne's attitude, doing what she wants to do, and not taking to heart the criticism coming from other artists. There's always going to be someone being critical, and there will be others that will love the work. Just follow your heart.

Yes Nelson Shanks studied with Hensche. Henry made him paint a brick in sunlight repeatedly. It influenced his teachings at Incaminti.
