I say the following as someone who cycles and walks around: Never, ever ride beside a long truck, bus etc. close to an intersection. You can't see what they are going to do ahead of you and you are tucked into their blind spot. Make sure you have eye contact with the driver. Also, if you're standing on a corner and a long vehicle is making a turn in front of you, step back!

Exactly right! Everyone is blaming the truck driver. He may very well have made a wrong turn, but the cyclist will never win against any vehicle. Ride safe and you'll be ok! And the mayor saying side guards are the answer...puhlease.

@@eddieharcourt6049 we do need sideguards, no question, but that would just help keep you alive, it doesn't prevent the accident. I was almost killed by a right turning van 30 years ago. I too was on a bike lane on Beverly St. but the van driver unexpectedly turned right into the outside lane on Dundas, so his wheels came up close to the sidewalk as he turned and I would have been crushed agains the concrete pole that I was stopped next to. He stopped mid-turn, possibly having felt resistance from my metal pannier baskets, saw that I was there.and I walked away thanking the goddess for surviving that close call. What struck me most then was that there is no time, it happens so fast, to do anything to protect yourself, it's just happening so fast. Since then I have tried to make my life count by working hard for peace and justice in my community and internationally. Life is not to be taken for granted. I pray for this cyclist that there will be a full recovery.

and I also stay far away from any trucks, vans, any vehicles that might be risky to me. I am a wary cyclist. I am not interested in being dead right so I'd rather cede space on the road to the driver, whether car or truck. I am grateful for bike lanes that create a bit more space for us but we cannot be complacent, we still need to ride defensively and I would like to see courses offered for new or young cyclists. “Situational awareness.” How about dangerous and entitled petulance? Sidewalks. Wrong way. Traffic lights and street signs? “Huh???”
Since the advent of the bicycle lane, it’s entirely acceptable to pass on the right side. That’s just stupid - especially if it’s a truck turning.
Bike lanes are UGLGY (oops) no matter how much lipstick the City slaps on that pig. EXPENSIVE. They cause massive congestion and have fostered bicyclists’ immature, STOOPID and let’s not forget, ANGRY, behaviour.
My DT street WAS beautiful and free flowing. How about Bloor-Danforth and University Avenue? Disasters.

So that those behind can know what you are doing .

I watched the video a number of times, at regular, then 1/2- and 1/4-speed, and _could not see_ the passenger-side *turn indicator flashing.* It's a moot point, because *_right turns are prohibited_* at that corner at that time of day. There is *signage* to that effect on a light-post on the _opposite side_ of the intersection, and I presume also on a few posts _prior_ to reaching the intersection. The cyclist was about *_one metre_* behind the passenger-side door of the truck, when its front right wheel began to turn, giving the man on the bike *_no time to react defensively,_* until it was too late, nd he was nearly *_crushed_* by the truck.
The truck driver *is at fault.*

A bike lane that doesn't have a dotted line so that the truck or car can’t move further over so that the cyclists can pass on the left of the vehicle. Nobody should be passing on the right when a car or truck is turning right. This is a horrible design and it's different at every intersection.

The cyclist was NOT PASSING. The cyclist was in his own lane. The truck entered the cyclist's lane. The bike was in it's own lane (the bike lane) and the truck entered the cyclist's lane for the purpose of making an illegal right-hand turn (as pointed out there was a prohibition on right hand turns at that intersection). This is all covered by Section 154.1(a) of the Highway Traffic Act, which says:” A vehicle shall not be driven from one lane to another lane or to the shoulder unless the driver first ascertains that it can be done safely.”

The trucker was ignoring the no turn signal… but where have you been? It’s a poop show in downtown Toronto. Cyclists don’t think any of the signs and lights apply to them. And now drivers think a light turning red means keep going through for the next 5 secs. Feel free to roll the dice.

Thank you, Joan, for reiterating those *_facts_* that caused the _near-fatal collision._ The cyclist was about _one metre_ behind the truck's passenger-side door, when the truck's front wheel started to turn - leaving the rider no time to act defensively as the truck turned into and hit him. I watched the video a number of times in regular, then 1/2- and 1/4-speed, and I couldn't see the right-turn indicator flashing (granted, it's a short video). It's possible the driver didn't signal his/her turn, which is prohibited at that time of day. *The driver is at fault.*
Seeing as David Shellnut, _"The Biking Lawyer,"_ gave commentary and _provided the _*_video_*_ of the collision_ to CP24, he is likely representing the victim - and he is successful at procuring settlements for his clients who have been injured or to families of *the victims killed by drivers.*

It's not surprising when so many Truckers are distracted by their phones. I see it all the time. Dump Trucks, Crane Trucks, Gravel Trucks and 18 Wheelers.

I was waiting for someone to say it lol. Indian truckers have killed many children and innocent people here with their paid for licenses from Indian owned trucking "schools". It isn't racist to say that those pricks should not be driving on our streets. Always speeding and on their phones. I've been to India and many South asian countries. Their roads are constantly full of accidents because they don't pay attention and drive recklessly as hell.

Even as a motorcycle rider I would drive cautiously beside a truck or any other motor vehicle, some, no most cyclists are real ignorant period.

Sideguards are NOT the answer. Driver education is the answer. Stop spending money where it’s not needed.

Side guards on trucks *_are needed_* to prevent the *deaths* of pedestrians, cyclists and other *_vulnerable road users._* Driver education, cyclist education, and pedestrian education is necessary throughout one's life.
