I mean they were on the oposit sides of the world, and with ship building and cartoghrafy not being advanced enough at this time to make the trip from Asshai to westeros. And the first men feared the open water which leads me to believe that the last Hero and azor ahai/neferion/eldric/hyrkoon are not the same. We don't know how they made it, but my guess is that Dragonsteel was created by some ancient race with access to dragons we are not familiar with, and then thousands of years later, the Valyrians recreated dragonsteel in their own way, making Valyrian steel.
Valyrian steel existed long before Aegon's Conquest, but during the time of the Long Night, they apparently called it Dragonsteel, and since this was well before Valyria was founded, it suggests the Valyrians may not have been the first ones to make those kinds of swords.
