Yonder is made by a small team of Industry veterans who thought it would be interesting to combine elements from Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, The Legend of Zelda and Skyrim, and make Yonder. Yes there's no combat but the rest of the game does borrow from these games in a lot of ways, and it turns out, it's a pretty brilliant title that came out of it.

I really don't agree with this review at all. This game is unique in its own right. It does not deserve to be compared against other titles like Zelda and Stardew. I really don't think its fair to say that its trying to be all of those great games. You said that the quests etc are quite repetitive, but thats the nature of games like this. So far I have played for about 6 hours and yes there are a lot of fetch quests. I think as a gamer I have come to expect this and I don't really shun it. In my opinion, games like FF15 etc have far worse quest repetition.
*You also say you can't grow crops etc. Well yes you can, you can buy a vegetable plot and place it in your farm.
*Furthermore you say that having to google stuff like where to find a brewers kit, shows a failure of the game?? I have yet to find any game where you dont have to google or look up a guide for at least something. I think most games have secrets or puzzles that people google.
*As for the kit, if you played long enough you'd know that the Kit is the first craftable item for each crafter. I knew this even before I got to the brewers guild.
Just about the only thing I agree with you is the fast travel aspect of the game. While I enjoy walking around and using the sage stones to travel, I can understand how players would find this annoying.
But apart from that I think this review is terrible. Heres an awesome Indie game that is trying to find its place in a very competitive market and you guys just knock it down without even playing it properly.

Saying something is the "nature" of it just shows how anyone can just utterly fail at understanding a topic.
A videogame isnt coming into existence from nature. Its made by people. And a game can be made in way that it gets interesting and stays interesting without being repetitive. But that needs proper design and well connected mechanics. There is really no need to have repetitive quests that need you to collect dozens of things and transport them, because thats just a sign of low effort.
Fetch quests shouldnt be expected, also as a gamer shouldnt it be supported to have such quests stay in games in this day and age.
These type of low effort mechanics and design choices are only there because someone wasnt able to do it properly. WHy that person wasnt able to do it properly, is a different topic, often enough its money, but also often enough its lack of experience and skill.
3 Stars sounds well rounded and valid as a rating for a game that has several positives but in the end just falls short in each direction.
And its also nessecary to keep it in perspective and compare it to other games. Because rightfully so are people asking themselves whether they get a samey experience like Zelda, Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley. And thats not just because people have wrong expectations but also because these expectations were caused by the developers.
Pointing out that the game falls too short in comparison and so cant deliver in any of the expected regards is the very point of reviewing it.
Someone might have bought it being convinced it will be similar to Stardew Valley only without combat but therefor in nice 3D environment. Sadly thats not the case and that person now knows.
I wish you all the fun with the game, i really do and when you can overlook its flaws or have it even that its flaws arent flaws for you, perfect. Thats the optimal thing, you like the game you bought. Im really happy for you, however, there are others who cant overlook it or for whom the flaws are a big problem.
Some expect more from questing in such adventure games. And even more when its a game that lacks depth in any regard.

Mashed Popotoes I have a feeling he might have meant clay jars rather than Brewers kits as you do have to go to a location that is somewhat hidden away to have them made. On a side note, it is really dumb that you can't build a Potter's wheel or something via the Tinkers guild to make your own clay pots, but whatever. Apparently, the devs have added in a craftable item that lets you fast travel to any of your farms. Also, supposedly they will be adding in additional post game content to the game soon. But, who really knows? Anyway, I beat the game a couple days ago, and finally 100%ed it last night, so I really hope there is some more content coming soon. It is a fun little game, but 3 stars probably is a fair rating in it's current state.

made by 3 people? and andromeda was made by 450?... this game may not be a blockbuster but it sure gives you perspective on how bad AAA games actually are

    • @Aries73
      @Aries73 6 лет назад

People keep caterwauling about the Switch not getting these "AAA blockbusters". With the state the "AAA" industry is in--what with all the day-one DLC, MTX, and Lootboxes--that is far from being a bad thing. Best believe real Switch owners are not missing any of that mess.

Maybe swap the ratios of gameplay video and human video. In a review I'd prefer watch gameplay than the reviewers.

I've played Yonder for about 20 hours and I would have to agree with most of your points. This is NOT an amazing hybrid of Zelda and Stardew Valley, if you have those expectations prepare to be disappointed. However, for £20 this can very much be an enjoyable game for people wanting a more easy-going gaming experience.
As a reviewer who has played the game for over 8 hours, I would have expected a better grasp on the crafting mechanics, as they are the same for each of the crafts and not exactly hard to pick up. What were your opinions on the game relying on a trade system instead of currency? The use of sometimes poorly placed sage stones instead of fast travel? Do you think the game could have expanded on the ideas of farming (and yes, there is agricultural farming as well).

Very true but, it's still not very good. Especially when you consider as the winding pathways you need to take to get to places. I do like this game but that is my main complaint.

This is a 5 star game for me and I love it. It does have a way for fast travel with the Star shaped item given to you by the helper for your farm. There are all kinds of help with the map and the compass. I don't think you actually played this game because you don't seem to know a lot about it. So sorry, your loss.

all these points are super valid; i was distracted by the lovely art style and look of it, bought it on impulse at full price on switch when it came out. i put it down after about 20 hours of trying to GET TO the more ......in-depth experience that never came. It's super hallow, like some people said its nice for an easy-going farming/simulation game experience..but even the farming in this game was disappointing for me, personally. at that rate just get stardew valley, which was made by 1 person, is fantastic and satisfying to play, and gives you much more gameplay hours for your buck.

  • @ichigokage
    @ichigokage 7 лет назад +3

I have to agree with this video. I do like the world they've made, so many things tucked away like the mountain town Cinderton. There are silly quests like The Great Beard Off in which a woman wants to grow a beard as great as a man she looks up to. And she can only do this by rubbing ghost fish stew on her face. You do you.
I'm gathering the things needed to restore the Cloud Catcher right now. Been distracted by the Miitopia demo. I'm mainly exploring the biomes which each feel and look lovely like the rest of the game.
You can fast travel somewhat via these stone watcher statues, but that's to specific parts of the biome. I too have yet to figure out how to actually farm. A bigger backpack is a requirement; maybe in an update? I was also disappointed in that you can't interact with your farmhouse at all. I would have LOVED to decorate my home.
It just feels...hollow. Like it was said; for a game made by three people, its an alright game. Thankfully I bought it during the pre-order time so it was $15.
I CAN recommend it. If you're curious, want a calm game to chill out in between big story heavy games or when it's on sale. It will be compared to other indie titles such as Undertale and definitely Stardew Valley that pack so much in their worlds.
3/5 is a fair rating of it.
    P.S. I NEED a Sprig-pig plush!

It does remind me of Zelda BOTW in a way. When your character enters the valley of the first town, the cutscene plays like the opening scene in BOTW with the character running to the edge of the cliff and the camera panning out to get a panoramic view of the land. You can almost compare the scenes from the 2 games side by side and the cutscenes look almost identical except for the game differences. So yeah, I think they took that idea from BOTW and used it in their game.

I think in this day and age of even console games recieving patches and updates throughout its life, some of these downsides could be rectified and more diverse content added. So hopefully in 6 months, possibly a year it will be a contender for the other indie games it's trying to imitate.

This game is actually lovely but its not for those who prefer hard-core combat. Thats not this kind of game. We don't have many options in this style of games and I hope developers keep making games like yonder. Its fun and well done. Its just about exploration and being able to enjoy it without everything trying to assault you. Its not like stardew but you can have a farm and thats fun. Its really its own genre and I hope they make another adventure like this.

I have to agree on most things you said. This game looked so good, and had so much potential. Boy was I dissipointed on what I got. Such a wast on three awsome talented developers since just making a few better choices on what this game should acctually be would have made it an awsome game. It really feels like playing a game with awsome graphics but aimed for smal kids. And I mean really young, my 5 year old daughter loved it and she is probably the exact right age group for this.

Ok so before people read these comments this is going to be long but there's some stuff you have to know before you buy it. This is a legit review usally I only give reviews by ign or what culture ect with a grain of salt. Becouse honestly they've been wrong in the past. But these guys are dead on. There is no depth to any of the stuff in it. Even the "jobs" had no depth to them. You don't feel like a brewer or tailor when you unlock them its literally here's a list of stuff you can make. And the only real reason to make them is to finish the game, it's a chore. There's no house creation, you can't make any form of relationships with other characters other then quest stuff. And the farming is literally for resources that more difficult to get early on but has no use afterwords other then trading. And you'll read it in the other comments about how it was made by 3 guys and that's incredible truthfully it's not. We all love to forget but minecraft was made by a single guy that was incredible. Stardew valley was by a single guy that was incredible. Heck dwarf fortress was made by a single guy and that was incredible. And remeber there was no stardew valley or dwarf fortress or any of that to compare there ideals too. These people 1 person to 1 game literally made a entire genre that's incredible. I dont buy we don't have enough people as a excuse when the very games there trying to base off of was invented by one person who had nothing to base off of. Dragon quest builders to and lego world's has more depth and inspiration then this game if that tells you anything. You also think hey I'm a tailor so I'm going to make cloths, or a brewer so I'm going to brew beer. You don't period. You are literally off on a fetch quest to find silk so you can make a needle then you "buy" a kit so you can place all of this into a piece of sail. And there is no choice eventually you have to unlock brewer and you have to unlock tailor ect. These guys were nice to this game becouse it was made by 3 people but this game isn't worth 50 its not worth 20. Heck it's barely worth 10.
