This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Wow - a LOT of work in your door in particular - no wonder you didn't want to mitre the final beads. Looks amazing though, and I hope you get a huge feeling of satisfaction from it every time you use it entering the house.
I DO NOT STOP ADMIRING YOU ALWAYS I SEE ALL YOUR WORK. YOU DO NOT WANT AN ASSISTANT IN YOUR WORKSHOP TEA SUPPORT WITH ALL THE PASSION THAT I HAVE TOWARD THE WOODS AS YOU DO IT GREAT MASTER. GREETINGS FROM PERU-LIMA
I just milled an ash log. I've been looking for a good use for it and it looks like doors are it. Beautiful work. Btw, ash are dying all over north America by the Emerald Ash Borer. Sad since ash is a stunning wood.
neat trick for squaring that shoulder edge. ash is such a beautiful light wood. i'm probably going to "borrow" the design to do my shed door out of pine. yea i know, it's easier to screw up on cheaper wood :D
Is the plane you employ on the tenons possibly a little on the dull side? Looks like it? And, you are running the center drill quite out from the cutting edges of the square chisel in one scene? Is there some reason for that stance? If the drill is a bit off center or dull that can cause walking and you can hear the off center at times. Those Japan brand chisels are the best around and I get them from Powermatic $$ or out of Canada in the King's sizes or metric. There is a brand somewhere on the net that has long reach square chisels but you have to have a machine throw that make use of em. Thanks for the vid from we'enz in Chicago
Trees and their wood are massive blessing of God to mankind. When genious craftsmen apply their skills to woods, they speak up and tell us how happy they are. Happiness of your doors is self explanetory. Watching this video all the way up to end was very soothing to eyes. Loved it.
Nice work, I noticed that it does not look like you face joint the wood before you run it through the planer, am I mistaken or can you elaborate. thanks I enjoy our videos.
Hi May I ask a couple of questions, The epoxy you used is what type and the brand name etc? as I see a lot now using epoxy glues , before yellow glue was available in Australia I had been buying pva and adding Bondcrete to make a equivalent yellow glue. What is the Ash Door a Mountain ash and were are you buying the seasoned lumber from ?
+Tom Thumb hi glue is by CRC they call it builders glue, really nice and thick and a long open time. The timber is American ASH, from bbs timbers here in auckland. I have heard there is not many good timber supplies in Aus. This usa ASH is actually very cheap here.
Very educational and loved watching this, especially since I'm about to start my own large door project. I'm not sure I have the skills and tools for custom mortises on the large outside frame, so I was just going to use 14 X 140 dominoes. Do you think this will work out?
out of interest, why did you use through tenons? just a design choice? and why not floating tenons - like some version of domino? i'm about to embark on a series of doors for every 'hole' in a house i'm reno-ing so am always interested in why people do what they do. have also seen people do laminated cross-ways cores with a thick veneer instead of a solid piece. any thoughts? i live in a climate that is boiling in the summer and super cold -40c not uncommon, in the winter. having a single panel in the door seems like a 'cold' ingress, so was thinking of using a piece of cork underlay between two layers of thinner panel... anyone see any folly with that?
A through tenon is really much stronger than stub tenons. For larger doors traditional joinery needs to be used to prevent sag. For smaller less heavy interior doors you could probably get away with the larger domino. It really depends on how wide and heavy the door is how much use it will get how many interior members does it have ( glass panels or all timber rails and panels)
the group is called Carpenters Talk Group , it's mostly british and irish carpenters but alot of them are working around the world, you're videos are normally a big hit with the group and alot say they already watch your videos so I know you'll be a big hit in the group, it's also good for picking up tips on how to do jobs or get around some of the more complicated ones. See you there
+Gentjan Ferizoviqi cheers. In this case it's an aluminium frame made with the rest of the house lot. I'll certainly film next time I make a frame. Try my vid ' you want how many doors'
I was taught that the idea of wedging a tenon was to actually widen it into a tapered mortise creating a tighter joint. May i ask why you wedge between the mortise and tenon please, as in my humble opinion all you are doing is filling a gap?.
I really liked this door build. I think I now want to rebuild our front door with this as inspiration. Great work.
+Mike Swankhouse oh cool, go for it

Very nice. Great little trick with cutting the wedges too - will have to steal that one!

Do you think the stile and rails would of held up with just dominoes?
No
Nice work, I noticed that it does not look like you face joint the wood before you run it through the planer, am I mistaken or can you elaborate.

Nice ink, and the door is not too shabby either....good work. Are you a " Bikie " as they say in Australia ?

As dgt3800 wrote, thank you so much for documenting this project Joey, it was Brilliant!
That's woodworking! That's a lot of work. No wonder that doors like these cost as much as 2 weeks of [unqualified work] salary in Peru.
Very nice Joe , gonna steal your idea for my front door 🚪! Thanks pal

+Lemongrasspicker cheers my door is about 40kg the other bigger one is about 55kg
Awesome door. Thanks for this.
Being an outside door I am surprised you did not bed the glass in glazing compound.

+theonlyari yes
I was taught that the idea of wedging a tenon was to actually widen it into a tapered mortise creating a tighter joint. May i ask why you wedge between the mortise and tenon please, as in my humble opinion all you are doing is filling a gap?.
I'm gluing the wedge the to the tenon. Thus creating a flared tenon.
Good Job
Great stuff man!! Your work inspires me.
