Many forget that Puerto Rico beat the USA team on two previos ocasiones (the ones made of college playes).
Once in México and the Pan American games in Cuba and in the World Cup in Argentina in 1990. It hardly made the news in United States but it did shook the United States Basketball Commitee.
2 years later the formed the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympics.

Puerto Rico beat a college team first in 1989 for the gold at the World Qualifier in México with the likes of Christian Laettner and Gary Payton. They also beat another USA college team twice at the 2003 Pan Am Games with a group that included the likes of Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon and Josh Childress.

Yo vi este juego cuando estaba en Kwuait, éramos sobre 50 puertorriqueños y casi la misma cantidad de estadounidenses. Ellos se comenzaron a salir de la caseta en donde estábamos viendo el juego. Al terminar eramos solo puertorriqueños que porpoco tumbamos la caseta celebrando... jajaja que recuerdos.

I would love to have hear some commentators during this game. Can't tell what going on during some of the more dramatic moments because the wrong camera was on, lol. Guess that's what highlights are for. I heard a really good one this morning on the radio, I felt like I was watching the game. In fact that's what brought me here. Puerto Rico always have talented players when are able to play as a unit, and this game was the perfect example, they play hard and most importantly they were consistent.
Today, we are different. with a young team we need to start from scratch still talent but we need to work harder now and learn to be consistent.

I remember watching this game live. it was either a saturday or sunday afternoon. And I was going crazy. I am a Puerto Rican. Born in the US, and i'm a veteran. I love my Country and I love Puerto Rico. Watching this game all I wanted and hoped was for Puerto Rico to have a good outing. And make it competitive. I didn't not think it was going to go down the way it did. USA had Iverson, Marbury, Duncan, Stoudamire, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo. and PR had arroyo and Ayuso and? But for that day all the stars aligned. And they played great. And they played hard. They deserved the win. And the US was hit with a dose of reality right in the mouth!
The greatest players ever would never lose a game like this . LBJ is like 10th best. Not first.
Puerto Rico deserves the medal and respect, this years US team was full of themselves and needed a reality check, and got it.

"Arroyo and Ayuso and?" Dude! Do a quick Google search about Jose Piculin Ortiz and Eddie Casiano at least. Most of our players didn't play in the NBA but Ortiz, Danny Santiago got to the NBA. Most of PR players played in the European leagues. Now, guess who won the gold and silver medals.
Ortiz is a FIBA hall of famer.

My point was that the US team was crazy stacked with talent, height, and athelticism, compared to PR's. And they still lost.

Great game! Puerto Rico packed the paint and USA couldn’t make an outside shot. Richard Jefferson’s shooting was horrible. It’s amazing how much the game has changed in 16 years. Now it’s mainly 3 point shooting and not much inside play

I agree. When they announced the roster at the beginning, I kept wondering: Where is the consistent outside shooting supposed to come from? But yeah, after a lot of rule changes and Dantoni's offensive influence on the Suns and later the Warriors, the game has changed so much.

Was one of the best moments for Puerto Rico in the history. Sadly loss vs Italy in Quarterfinals for closed margin and U.S.A. won Bronze Medal. Missed the PR Team from 1960s-early 2000s.

Solo hay que ver el estilo de juego de PR aqui en este partido, pausado, tomando su tiempo, pases inteligentes, sin desesperarse, contrario a estos dias, tan prnto reciben la bola ya quieren anotar mucha desesperacion cero pases y mucho turnover, dificil volver a ese nivel con esa mentalidad. In 2002 Argentina defeated them 87-80 in the last game of the 2nd round, just the day before knockout round began (quarterfinals, semis and finals).

Puerto Rico is a small island, part of the USA, works hard to cover its needs, pay taxes as part of the American nation that is, and give a hand to those who enter the island in need. It is small but in most competences, if it doesn’t win, stands out, either in sports, beauty or intelligence.

This was such a huge embarrassment considering that Puerto Rico is a small U.S. territory. And the U.S. lost by 19. It was much worse than the 1988 USA team losing to Russia in the Olympics. That team was U.S. college kids vs. Russian pro players and Russia was a world basketball power at the time and won the gold medal. And the U.S. only lost by 6 in 1988. In 2004, Puerto Rico didn't medal (although the U.S. lost to gold medal winner Argentina too)
