Many forget that Puerto Rico beat the USA team on two previos ocasiones (the ones made of college playes).
Once in México and the Pan American games in Cuba and in the World Cup in Argentina in 1990. It hardly made the news in United States but it did shook the United States Basketball Commitee.
2 years later the formed the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympics.

Puerto Rico beat a college team first in 1989 for the gold at the World Qualifier in México with the likes of Christian Laettner and Gary Payton. They also beat another USA college team twice at the 2003 Pan Am Games with a group that included the likes of Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon and Josh Childress.

Yo vi este juego cuando estaba en Kwuait, éramos sobre 50 puertorriqueños y casi la misma cantidad de estadounidenses. Ellos se comenzaron a salir de la caseta en donde estábamos viendo el juego. Al terminar eramos solo puertorriqueños que porpoco tumbamos la caseta celebrando... jajaja que recuerdos.

I would love to have hear some commentators during this game. Can't tell what going on during some of the more dramatic moments because the wrong camera was on, lol. Guess that's what highlights are for. I heard a really good one this morning on the radio, I felt like I was watching the game. In fact that's what brought me here. I remember watching this game live. it was either a saturday or sunday afternoon. And I was going crazy. I am a Puerto Rican. Born in the US, and i'm a veteran. I love my Country and I love Puerto Rico. Watching this game all I wanted and hoped was for Puerto Rico to have a good outing. And make it competitive. I didn't not think it was going to go down the way it did. USA had Iverson, Marbury, Duncan, Stoudamire, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo. and PR had arroyo and Ayuso and? But for that day all the stars aligned. And they played great. And they played hard. They deserved the win. And the US was hit with a dose of reality right in the mouth!
The greatest players ever would never lose a game like this . LBJ is like 10th best. Not first.
Puerto Rico deserves the medal and respect, this years US team was full of themselves and needed a reality check, and got it.

"Arroyo and Ayuso and?" Dude! Do a quick Google search about Jose Piculin Ortiz and Eddie Casiano at least. Most of our players didn't play in the NBA but Ortiz, Danny Santiago got to the NBA. Most of PR players played in the European leagues. Now, guess who won the gold and silver medals.

Great game! Puerto Rico packed the paint and USA couldn’t make an outside shot. Richard Jefferson’s shooting was horrible. It’s amazing how much the game has changed in 16 years. Now it’s mainly 3 point shooting and not much inside play

This was such a huge embarrassment considering that Puerto Rico is a small U.S. territory. And the U.S. lost by 19. It was much worse than the 1988 USA team losing to Russia in the Olympics. That team was U.S. college kids vs. Russian pro players and Russia was a world basketball power at the time and won the gold medal. And the U.S. only lost by 6 in 1988. In 2004, Puerto Rico didn't medal (although the U.S. lost to gold medal winner Argentina too)

It's hard to believe but Puerto Rico outplayed and outcoached the US on this game. The strategy of Puerto Rico of limiting the US players to only outside shots, worked like a charm. This will always be one of the most remembered victories of our Puertorican National Team for years to come because we did not beat that US team full of HALL OF FAME NBA PLAYERS, but we spanked them without a doubt. HOOORAY FOR THE BORICUAS!!!

This usa team had 3 hall of famers in wade, lebron and iverson and popovich the coach who is also a hof coach. That victory by puerto rico against usa is no small feat and they beat that day possibly one of the greatest player the world has seen in lebron.

Puerto Rico is a small island, part of the USA, works hard to cover its needs, pay taxes as part of the American nation that is, and give a hand to those who enter the island in need. It is small but in most competences, if it doesn’t win, stands out, either in sports, beauty or intelligence.

Larry Brown is famous for his hate of coaching rookies. Some say Darco Milicic never developed because of him. Never gave him a chance. Not saying he was going to be an all time great, but maybe a decent rotation stretch 5 at the very least.
Honestly the 13 minutes he played he didn’t show any reason why he should be kept in game, many times as soon as the ball touched his hands he passed in less than 2 seconds. I wish he played more minutes because maybe he could’ve turned it around. But he just didn’t played well enough to be kept in game.
Can't blame Brown, besides a young Bron, you had some all time greats on that roster. They just got beat. Baaad..

The title is misleading.The US dream team lost in 2002 to Argentina,Yugoeslavia and Spain..However the loss to Puerto Rico by 19 point was the most lopsided loss that any US dream team has suffered.
I guess they don't count that loss given that there were no NBA players on that team in 1998.
@@joelpilotf15 The title is still misleading because the US Dream team lost with NBA players in the 2002 Fiba world championship to Argentina,Yugoslavia and Spain. However ,I corrected the dates above.Thanks

@@VictorFernandezBigdestroyer During the 2002 , the US basketball squad had a record of 6-3 you fool. Consequently, the title is incorrect. As much as I enjoyed Puerto Rico 's win , the US basketball squad was not undefeated in men basketball tournaments for 16 years.Notice it says " USA basketball" which implies any FIBA basketball tournament within a 16 year spam, since " US basketball" is the governing body which sends US teams not only to the olympics but also to all FIBA tournaments. Thus , the title is inaccurate.
